West Indian immigration: To what extent was West Indian national identity shaped by their experiences in Britain during the Windrush era (1948-1963)? History Abstract Page | 1 The arrival of the ship MV Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948 is largely considered the land mark of post-war mass migration to Britain. With approximately 492 Caribbean men and women aboard the ship, their lives in Britain following their arrival has been a key area of examination. Throughout this study, I use the Empire Windrush as an overarching case study that forms the central basis of my research. My dissertation explores how ‘Britishness’ influenced the national identity of West Indian citizens, from both within the colonies and during their time in Britain. It analyses the impact of the cultural and economic hardships experienced by Caribbean immigrants, while also highlighting the formation of newfound resistance to these adversities. Therefore, it becomes clear that the role of the ‘Mother country’ within the narrative of West Indian immigration has played a major role in defining West Indian national identity. This notable journey marked the beginning of the Windrush influx which saw thousands of Caribbean citizens endure the same journey to a post-war Britain. Promises of employment opportunities, financial stability and a more prosperous future were key driving factors of this movement. -

After graduating she not only was a great nurse, but she worked hard to encourage and inspire more black young women to get into nursing. Dumas wrote many short stories and novels, mostly about crime, scandals and historical figures. His writing was very popular and he was well known across France where he lived, as well as much of Europe. His books were translated into over 100 languages and he is the most widely read French author in the world. -

WINDRUSH FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF HERITAGE AND COMMUNITY ADVOCACY IN SUMMER OF 2020 WINDRUSH FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF HERITAGE AND COMMUNITY ADVOCACY IN SUMMER OF 2020 UPDATED 1995 was the year which first saw Sam King and Arthur Torrington (co-founders) working to establish a CHARITY that delivered heritage and community services, helping to create an identity for Caribbean people, especially the youth, in Britain. ‘Windrush’, ‘Empire Windrush’ and ‘Windrush Generation’ have always been key words in our operations. Both men developed the idea, but Sam was the one to have led the first Windrush commemorative event (40th anniversary) in 1988, hosted by Lambeth Council. He had been a passenger on the Empire Windrush, an RAF WWII serviceman and the first Black Mayor of Southwark, London. He was first to have coined the term, ‘Windrush Generation’. There was no support from any Local Authority, except Lambeth, in 1998 when we held the 50th anniversary, and national newspaper, The Times, was the first to carry our publicity early in 1998. Arthur has also been the Director responsible for publicity from 1995 and who first contacted The Times newspaper in 1998. Sam brought together in 1988, 1998 and 2003 dozens of his fellow Windrush passengers. What fuelled your interest in this topic and in the broader field of Caribbean women’s history? Dalea Bean (DB): So, I did my PhD a couple hundred years ago it feels like! Actually, it is a funny story in terms of how the topic came about. I went to The University of the West Indies, Mona for my undergraduate years and I just knew I wanted to do history. I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to research, however. When I completed my graduate courses, I spoke to one of my lecturers and I had some ideas in mind. -

An Evening to Celebrate Black and Asian British Writing Venue: Lecture theatre Jo1, Johannisstr. 4, Münster On Thursday 29 September 2016 from 7pm Join us at this special event with readings from renowned authors, showcasing literature from the UK’s Black and Asian writers, who have been a part of the country’s arts scene for generations. Featuring award-winning poet Moniza Alvi, crime writer and activist, Mike Phillips, acclaimed novelist Kerry Young and poet, playwright, and novelist Gabriel Gbadamosi, the reading will be chaired by Susheila Nasta, Founding Editor of Wasafiri, the well- known magazine of international contemporary writing that has championed Black and Asian writing since its inception in 1984. A discussion follows the readings covering topics such as the politics of publishing, prize culture, as well as the challenges facing writers after Brexit; it will be chaired by Mark Stein, Chair of Postcolonial Studies, University of Münster, and Susheila Nasta. This event is hosted by the English Department of the University of Münster and has been organised in partnership with Wasafiri: The Magazine of International Contemporary Writing. All are welcome. The first of a series of lively events planned to parallel the compilation of the first Cambridge History of Black and Asian British Writing, its Editors, Professor Susheila Nasta (Open University) and Professor Mark Stein (University of Münster) are committed to profiling new writing and encouraging lively interaction between creative practitioners and critics. Drawing on pioneering research from over 40 international scholars, some of whom will be in attendance at this special Munster event, the book will be published in 2018. -

The ‘othering’ of Africa and its diasporas in Western museum practices Carol Ann Dixon Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Geography University of Sheffield August 2016 ii Abstract This thesis examines how curatorial approaches to the display and interpretation of artworks and cultural objects from the African continent, as well as works by diasporan artists of African descent, have changed over time in Western museums and galleries – focusing on histories and geographies of acquisition, collection development, exhibition assemblage, narrative interpretation and other curatorial practices. With particular reference to the culture sectors in Britain and France it investigates how and why exhibits with African provenance have been ‘othered’ in both ethnographic and fine art contexts, drawing on fieldwork undertaken at four case study institutions: the British Museum, Tate, the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Through the application of qualitative research methods – including walk-through reviews of permanent holdings on display, archive-based surveys of past exhibitions, visual analysis of selected exhibits, and semi-structured interviews with curators and other creative professionals – questions are addressed in relation to the nature and extent of othering, the impacts of Self/Other binarism, and amelioration strategies to improve museum and gallery experiences for more diverse audiences. Tate Encounters [E]dition 1, October 2007 Migration, Modernity and English Writing: Reflections on Migrant Identity and Canon Formation Mike Phillips [The ideas in this lecture were first canvassed in a keynote address to a conference on postcolonial literature at Humboldt University in Berlin, which took place shortly before I joined the staff at Tate Britain (2005). Subsequently a form of the lecture was delivered to a conference on canon formation at Dundee University, by which time it had developed a new focus around the junction of 'black' visual arts, identity, citizenship and multiculturalism sparked off by a series of discussions with my Tate colleague Dr. Victoria Walsh. These conversations were joined at other moments by various critics, notably the Indian (and Danish) critic Tabish Khair, and were part of the buildup to the research programme which became Tate Encounters. The essay features various elements of our dialogues, which had a decisive influence in shaping some of our ideas about how to approach the role of such notions as diaspora, ethnicity and culture, when we began exploring the relationship of national institutions with 'new' and minority audiences.] My name is Mike Phillips and I’m a novelist among other things. You may not know that I am a United Kingdom citizen, and you may not know that I do not think of myself as a Caribbean writer, or an African writer, or an African American writer, or a diasporic writer, or even as a writer with an ambiguous stance somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. No such luck. I think of myself as an English writer, and all of this seems simple enough, except that I also think of myself (and I often describe myself) as a black British writer.
