Introduction Peter Carey is “[w]ithout question the pre-eminent literary voice of post-colonial Australia”, writes Nicholas Wroe in the British Guardian.1 Robert McCrum, also writing for the Guardian, calls him “the dominant Australian writer of his generation”, who “arrived exuberantly on the international literary scene […] with Illywhacker, his second novel, in 1985” – counting Carey’s True History of the Kelly Gang amongst the “100 greatest English-language novels of all time” (albeit at place 100).2 So, while Australian literature may have the air of something exotic in the field of Anglophone literary studies, Peter Carey, with all his high international acclaim, does not. He has won the Man Booker Prize twice – Oscar and Lucinda (1988), True History of the Kelly Gang (2001)3 – and he is so well established in academia that Andreas Gaile’s extensive bibliography on Carey amounts to almost fifty pages, even though it only reaches until the year 2003.4 Quite a few doctoral theses have of course also been published by now.5 In fact, Carey is so popular that there are articles solely devoted to discussing his fame.6 Considering all this fame and all these academical discussions, one might think that there is little left to say about his work and therefore little need for this additional thesis. However, when we look at Gaile’s assessment of almost 30 years of scholarship, then there is something that should grasp our attention. Gaile writes: “Regardless of disciplinary affiliations of Carey’s academic commentators […], the vast majority of Carey scholars

    Books and Covers: Reflections on Some Recent Australian Novels ELIZABETH WEBBY For the 2002 Miles Franklin Award, given to the best Australian novel of the year, my fellow judges and I ended up with a short list of five novels. Three happened to come from the same publishing house – Pan Macmillan Australia – and we could not help remarking that much more time and money had been spent on the production of two of the titles than on the third. These two, by leading writers Tim Winton and Richard Flanagan, were hardbacks with full colour dust jackets and superior paper stock. Flanagan’s Gould’s Book of Fish (2001) also featured colour illustrations of the fish painted by Tasmanian convict artist W. B. Gould, the initial inspiration for the novel, at the beginning of each chapter, as well as changes in type colour to reflect the notion that Gould was writing his manuscript in whatever he could find to use as ink. The third book, Joan London’s Gilgamesh (2001), was a first novel, though by an author who had already published two prize- winning collections of short stories. It, however, was published in paperback, with a monochrome and far from eye-catching photographic cover that revealed little about the work’s content. One of the other judges – the former leading Australian publisher Hilary McPhee – was later quoted in a newspaper article on the Award, reflecting on what she described as the “under publishing” of many recent Australian novels. This in turn drew a response from the publisher of another of the short- listed novels, horrified that our reading of the novels submitted for the Miles Franklin Award might have been influenced in any way by a book’s production values.

    Book History in Australia since 1950 Katherine Bode Preprint: Chapter 1, Oxford History of the Novel in English: The Novel in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the South Pacific since 1950. Edited by Coral Howells, Paul Sharrad and Gerry Turcotte. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly.

    The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967.

Cambridge: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009, 361pp. AU$ 44.95 ISBN: 1 4438 0523 8 (pbk) From early convict narratives to contemporary literary fiction, Australian writers have consistently represented a diverse range of sexual behaviours, scenarios, desires and identities. Notwithstanding such an intriguing and bountiful array of sexual narratives and a rather sophisticated range of analytical approaches made available by psychoanalytic, postmodern, feminist, gay, lesbian, and queer scholarship, Australian literary critics have been relatively silent or perhaps even coy when it comes to thinking about sex. Back in 1998, Dean Kiley chastised ‘OzLitCriture’ for its reluctance to adequately address the queerness of Australian literature: Despite the gloriously disproportionate over-representation of queer writers and writing in whatever you might call an OzLit canon, the cybernetic industry of Australian Literature and its critical machinery (OzLitCriture for short) continues to occlude, defuse, diffuse, evade and domesticate queer issues. In the years since Kiley’s critique a body of work about Australian literature and sexuality has developed but book-length studies have failed to emerge. In this sense Xavier Pons’ Messengers of Eros can claim the title of being the first full length critical study of the representations of sex in Australian literature. Xavier Pons has been contributing to Australian literary studies, and been one of its chief proponents in Europe, since the late 1960s. Pons has published on an extensive range of Australian authors and themes and is perhaps best known for his critical study on the work of Henry Lawson, Out of Eden (1984).
