A AMessage Message From From The The State State Chaplain Chaplain ReverendReverend Justin Justin Braun Braun Dear Sisters in Christ, Since I last wrote to you, the world has undergone quite a change! No one could have expected, predicted, or planned for Coronavirus and the continuing effects it is having and will have on our beautiful nation, and on our organization. We have climbed the mountain of Lent, with a very “Lenty” feeling still with us during the joy of the Easter season. So many of you are quarantined, many of you are still working, many of you are not able to see family, and many of you are experiencing deep pain from not receiving the Eucharist for the first time in your lives for any prolonged period of time. Ladies let us take a moment to be in the presence of God before you continue reading! There is certainly nothing in our living memory that is like what we have experienced these past few months, and I pray, we will have nothing like this again. However, history has many instances of plague and war that can be helpful indicators for how we proceed. The Church herself, in the midst of persecution throughout the ages, has always been a great compliment to the State, in helping people to get back on their feet, and to come out of the shadow of war and disaster-WE know something about this! Looking at the work of the saints, es- pecially so many heroic and selfless priests, religious, and nurses and doctors who through the ages involved themselves in these desperate situations, we learn that perseverance in prayer is VITAL! The months ahead are uncertain, and even these days of summer heat that we are beginning to experience will be filled with situations new and unexpected. As Catholics, and especially as Catholic Daughters of America, we need to be firm in our commitment of unity and charity towards the Church and the communities you serve and to lead by example. Whether that means keeping our social-distance, organizing more but smaller events, and continuing to serve those most in need, we can help heal and elevate our communities as they come to grips with these trying times. We are thankful that bishops throughout the state are working to once again make the sacraments more readily available to the faithful, and I ask you ladies all to pray for them and your parish priests as we try to minister with charity and safety. June is the month of the Sacred Heart, and as a challenge, I would like to ask all of you ladies to consider of- fering the Litany of the Sacred Heart every Thursday during the month for your bishop and chaplain. Whether you do this together or as individuals, it is a great source of strength for us clergy, and the great patron saint of priests, St. John Vianney, said that the priesthood is nothing more than the love of the Sacred Heart of Our Lord, so please pray! May God bless and Mary keep you near under her mantle of protection, and be assured of my nearness to you in prayer! Fr. Braun

Mission Statement Catholic Daughters of the Americas strive to embrace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the Advancement of human rights and human dignity for all.

June 2020 PAGE 3 A Message From The National CDA Director Carolyn Malik 361-594-3170 [email protected]

How are all my Catholic Daughter sisters in Texas doing today? Are you tired of “sheltering in” and not being able to join your relatives and friends for a cup of cof- fee or tea or just a visit? I only go to the store when needed and the post office a few times a week. We were not able to celebrate the great feast of Easter with our families which only makes our hearts yearn to see them even more. What has this period of time during this great season of Easter and Christ’s Resurrection taught us? Have we prayed more? Have we read more religious books? OR just sat glued to the television set only to hear more news about Mr. Corona and Ms. Virus. Or played more games on your phones? I do hope you utilized this time in prayer as well as learning more patience and caring for your family especially if you have youngsters in the household that are home schooling. My heart goes out to the seniors who are not able to complete their last year in high school with all activities this last year entails. I happen to have grand- daughters, one a high school senior as well as a college graduate who will not be able to walk and receive the “tube” that she has worked so hard for last several years. However, that does not dismiss the fact that she receives her degree. I feel the dear Lord is trying to show us what is really important in our lives. Prayer and sacrifice!! My husband and I enjoyed praying with the Masses and services that were broadcast from our parish as well as other areas, the Vatican and the beautiful Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Last evening, I prayed with St. Mary’s Catholic Center from College Station where they celebrated benediction and prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet for Divine Mercy Sunday. Ladies, it was beautiful. Two young ladies sang and played their instruments-guitar and keyboard. They were excellent. It gives one a feeling of HOPE for our world to see the younger generation so devout in their prayer life. Yes, Texas is full steam ahead planning for a great national convention in Dallas in July. States are begin- ning to lift some of their restrictions and it is good that they are being very cautious in this procedure. I am an optimist and I know that the Dear Lord and His Mother will definitely have a hand in making this con- vention a great experience for all. We are well seated in our faith and love for Christ and our dedication to the Blessed Mother and they will prevail. “Be Not Afraid”. Registration deadline is June 1, 2020 as well as the meal registration deadline. Cut-off date for hotel reser- vations at the CDA rate is also June 1. Walk/Run for Love deadline has been rescheduled to June 15. If you are donating an item for the silent auction, be sure to contact Darice Miksch ahead of time so she has a slot for you. Also, any CDA member who is a veteran or active military, please contact Duchess Collins at [email protected] as you will be recognized during the God and Country Mass scheduled for Fri- day morning at the convention. Thanks to all the wonderful ladies that have volunteered to assist at the convention. More hands are need- ed in various areas in simple positions as handing out envelopes with meal reservation tickets and conven- tion tote bags. You will be provided with simple instructions. Again, “Be Not Afraid.” Please contact me [email protected] and Debbie Braymer [email protected] if you can assist. Here’s hoping to see all in Dallas in July. God Bless.

June 2020 PAGE 4 A Message From The First Vice State Regent Rebecca Brown 979-248-0993 [email protected]

Greetings and blessings to all my CDA sisters. The state officers have been praying for all CDA membership in Texas during the past several months. Several courts lost members due to the COVID-19 virus and some courts lost members due to other issues. May all our members remember those who are now in heaven rejoicing with our Lord. Before the virus took hold, Texas CDA instituted a court in Flint with 22 members. The day was beautiful and State Chaplain Father Justin Braun joined the state offic- ers in welcoming the new members.

Court #2763 Membership State Regent Melodie Brunt & State Chaplain Fr. Braun with State DD# 6 Mary Durham Secretary Terrie Vacek, 1st Vice State Regent Rebecca Brown, State Regent Melodie Brunt Please send notes of congratulations to Regent Suzie Pierce, Court Our Lady of Montserrat #2763 at 872 County Rd. 3588, Winnsboro, TX 75494. On to membership. Remember, the state goal is for each Texas court to add 8 new members. Here are some tips for gaining membership in small courts. According to Sandy Cove Ministries, one question people ask is why some small groups continually grow and other flounder and shrink. Well, turns out the answer is very short. Character and habits shown by leaders/members outside of the small group correlates to the groups effectiveness and growth. How do you measure up to these few ideas? Praying for court members daily. Keep a journal of requests and email or post those intentions. Earn trust and build confidence by keeping things private when needed. “Always be on the lookout for ways to bless and encourage those in your group.” Contact court members regularly. Reach out to those who miss a meeting or two and to those who are doing well. Send a card, text a short message, or leave a message on their Facebook wall. We all need a little encouraging. Work on your court’s spiritual growth. Praying for your court and members is recognizing that you are in God’s hands. Offer different spiritual activities to your court’s members. Small groups spend time with each other outside of meetings. Try a “taco Tuesday” night, movie night, or a First Friday fish meal. The point is to spend time together other than at meetings or fundraisers. “DO LIFE TOGETHER.”

Connect with your members and other ladies in your parish will want to be part of CDA Be blessed in the peace of Christ.

June 2020 PAGE 5 A Message From The Second Vice State Regent Carolyn Ritchey 281-220-9064 [email protected] How is everyone doing? Hope all is well, and everyone is staying safe and healthy. Congratulations to all the newly elected local court officers! Your commitment to your court is very much appreciated! I am looking forward to meeting all the new officers this summer at our officer training workshops as well as the 2020 National Convention in Dallas. Hopefully all new officers have obtained the books from the previous officers and have had a chance to look through them and go over them with each other. I know that some probably have many questions and feel a little overwhelmed. Don’t worry because officer training is going to pro- vide you with answers and help you to ease into your position as a court leader. Officer training is mandatory for all local court officers. Your District Deputies should have al- ready contacted your court with the date you have been assigned to attend the training. If not, please contact her as trainings begin June 6, 2020. The State JCDA Co-Chairmen will be at some of the workshops for those interested in starting a JCDA court or to re- fresh themselves on procedures with their current courts. We have also added a Circle of Love break-out session that is offered to all local court Circle of Love chairmen. We will go over all the ins and outs of the National and State contest forms. So, if your court has chairmen that are interest- ed in attending, please notify the District Deputy as soon as possible. What you don’t find at our officer training workshops, we are working on presentations for the State’s website. Such presentations will include, but not limited to, a mock meeting for local courts and a ceremonials presentation on color guards and banner bearers. The wheels are turning on what we can do to bet- ter train our officers and to encourage more and more leadership within our local courts. So, get ready for a busy summer! Many things are developing, and your District Deputy will keep you up to date! See you soon! A Message From The State Secretary Terrie Vacek 979-533-3142 [email protected] Preparing for the passing of the gavel in the midst of a Pandemic. We are fully aware that some courts did not have their spring fundraisers, meetings were cancelled, the collection of annual dues is more difficult, and many of you feel disconnected. St. Rose of Lima reminds us that “the gifts of Grace increase as the struggles increase.” Please carefully review and share the following infor- mation and never hesitate to contact me for any questions or struggles you encounter. FORMS are to be mailed or emailed to the National Office and the current State Secretary. You may email a scanned copy of the original form to ensure clarity, proper processing, and save court funds. CONGRATULATIONS to the courts who submit more ‘new member’ and ‘renewal’ forms than deletions. You’re moving CDA in the right direction! FINANCIAL REVIEWS: Extended deadline is June 1st. Recording Secretaries, please confirm with the treasurer that all expenditures adopted by a motion shown in your minutes have been issued. Plan ahead for a smooth review. NATIONAL and STATE DUES INVOICE: National’s April invoices will be mailed to the local court regents as soon as the National CDA Headquarters in can open and process the March 31st additions and deletions. The State May invoices will be mailed following receipt of an updated local court membership number from national. These in- voices are payable upon receipt regardless of the local courts ability to meet. CHARITABLE REPORTING FORM: Please use the form found on the Texas state website to submit all your generous donations to State and Mom’s projects and National projects and charities. Congratulations to the newly elected local court officers. Be assured that your District Deputy, State Chairmen and State Officers are here for you. We are looking forward to meeting you at the National Convention in Dallas and at your Of- ficer Training Workshop this summer. God Bless you and “Thank You” for saying yes to service as an officer of your court! Blessings and Joy

June 2020 PAGE 6 A Message From The State Treasurer Virginia Olsovsky 361-772-8776 [email protected] Alleluia, Alleluia, Christ has risen! I hope you had a wonderful and blessed Easter sea- son, in spite of the unusual circumstances brought on by COVID-19. It does my heart good to see so many people turning to God for reassurance and guidance as we navigate our new “normal.” I am amazed at the resilience and resourcefulness of our Catholic Daughters as we ex- plore new ways to stay in touch, conduct meetings, and elect new officers. Our Texas CDA Facebook page continues to be a wonderful source of information and inspiration. If you haven’t already joined our page, I hope to see you there soon. As local court officers complete their term in office, treasurers will need to make sure that state and national dues are paid, unpaid bills are taken care of, and your books are up to date and ready for your financial review. Please keep in mind that although the deadline for financial reviews has been pushed back to June 1st, you are only reviewing the period from October 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020. I hope you will also check the guidelines in the Tools of the Trade for Retention of Records and do a little house cleaning before turning over your files to the new treasurer. Moving forward, the state board is continuing with preparations for this summer’s officer trainings work- shops and the upcoming National Convention in Dallas. I cannot emphasize the importance of these trainings enough, both for those of you who are new to your offices and also for those who are returning for a second term. Now more than ever, you need to stay up to date and aware of changes in procedures and policies. I hope you will join us at the National Convention in July, as we celebrate Olga Samaniego’s term as our Na- tional Regent. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to renew old friendships and forge new ones with our sisters in Christ!

Messages From The State Chairmen

Donna Moeller Circle of Love—Legislation Chairman 361-676-1012 [email protected] As you may be aware, the actual response window for 2020 Census began on March 12, 2020. However, given the COVID-19 situation, outreach events have been postponed and shifted to virtual means. The Census Bureau is committed to helping our communi- ties count and receive funding for critical services they may need in the next ten years. Plus, people are able to answer on the phone and online, in less than 10 minutes. Please share this information with your courts and court leaders. Below is a sample of several flyers available to share. Call or email me and I can provide additional fly- ers. With social distancing in effect everywhere, now is the perfect time to take a few minutes to fill out the census for your household and do your part. Thank you! Stay safe and well, and may God bless you!

Beatriz Gonzalez Circle of Love—Family Chairman 361-212-1252 [email protected]

Greetings from my home during this quarantine stay at home order that is ending. How- ever, I plan to continue to stay close to home as much as I can for awhile longer. Who knows what our world will look like by the time you get your newsletter in June. I may be all over the place by then. Well family has really been important and underfoot, I mean close by, these last six weeks or so. I’m sure most of you spent all of April in- doors or on your front porch or driveway. I know all families certainly spent good quali- ty time together playing, eating, praying, eating, cleaning, eating, watching movies, eat- ing, cooking and of course eating! Thank you to everyone who submitted contest forms. Congratulations for your wonder- ful work. Keep it up once we can get involved again! Sorry to report that we will not be able to attend our Astros game as planned since we have no idea if or where they will be playing. Perhaps we can do this later in the season or next year. Stay safe and love to all of you.

June 2020 PAGE 8 Janie Rubio Circle of Love—Quality of Life Chairman 361-571-7319 [email protected]

In the gospel of Luke (Lk. 18, 1-8), Jesus reminds us of the necessity of persistent prayer. Persistence does not necessarily mean long, unending prayer, but heartfelt and confident prayer. In other words, it is not so much the quantity as the quality of our prayers that will get God’s attention, aid, and mercy. We cannot control or manipulate God by our prayers. In prayers, it is God who really calls the shots. All we can do is trust. The 2019–20 corona virus pandemic has impacted religion in various ways, including the cancella- tion of the worship services in our church. We must remember that we are the church and as much as we miss going to church this is a wonderful opportunity to nurture the Quality of Life in our lives our homes, our families and most especially in our spiritual journey. With the cancellation of church functions, annual events in our parishes and pilgrimages, I find myself reflecting on the memorable pilgrimage we took to France with our wonderful sisters in Christ through CDA. What a blessing that was for us to experience yet another opportunity to appreciate the quality of life so many of us have and take for granted. I pray that we can continue to expand on the programs we have to improve the quality of those who aren’t so fortunate. Like many churches, we have been live streaming our Masses, Rosaries and the Chaplet of the Divine Mer- cy every day since we started being sheltered in, amidst the pandemic. I hope many of you have been able to join in with the watch parties we have had with Our Lady of Sorrows Facebook page. I hope that in spite of all the uncertain- ties during these past few weeks you have been able to stay focused on our heavenly Father and keep the faith. We will continue to pray for all affected with COVID-19. Together we will continue to pray for an end to this pandemic, for you and your families, as well as for wisdom for physicians and scientists to combat the disease. Thanks to all who participated with the Circle of Love Contest. I truly enjoyed working with the judges and reading the wonderful works you have been doing in your courts and your communities. Make the love of God be felt by many through simple, joyful, and sincere love and service.

Sheila Martinka Circle of Love—Youth/JCDA Co-Chairman 713-805-7094 smartinka@earthlink Peggy Supak Circle of Love—Youth/JCDA Co-Chairman 979-966-2286 [email protected] During this ever challenging and changing times in our world, the words of Father Peyton, “The family that prays together stays together”, take on an entire new meaning! Many believe that the COVID-19 pandemic is a “wake up call” from God, a chance for us to slow down and realize what we truly need in our lives. Inasmuch as the pandemic has taken away our daily routines, it has also made us realize that we can do without some things and that family togetherness is not so bad. And through modern technology we have learned to social distance via social media and have new terms as “air hug” or “virtual hug”, etc. We have heard from so many of our JCDA courts how they are getting creative through technology hosting meetings, rosaries, prayer services through ZOOM or other modalities of technology. These are great ways to stay in touch. At this time we have postponed the JCDA State Retreat. We are looking at other dates and if need be we may consider hosting a State Retreat via other technological means. We will continue to follow the progress as the economy reopens and plan from there. Our hearts go out to the 2020 graduates be it high school, college, grad school, medical school, etc. Please keep these young people in your prayers and get creative in your local community or local church parish to do something to honor their accomplishments! We have heard of parades to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and the like. If you have not done so already, give it some thought. Get creative and recognize these young people for their accomplishments. They are the future and they deserve proper recognition. Take care of yourselves, stay safe and be well! In the words of St. Paul, “we can do all things in Christ who strengthens us.”

Mary Lou Anderle Circle of Love—Spiritual Enhancement 979-966-2145 [email protected] Hello Summer! I for one am so ready for the summer and to get back to some sort of “normal.” I believe that it will be a new normal, but nevertheless, normal. As the summer months mean no meetings, let’s not use that to mean not to get together at all. Use these months as an opportunity to recharge, especially during all of the uncertainty of the pandemic. Spiritual Enhancement is more important than ever during these difficult times. Take this opportunity to do a book study, bible study or a retreat. These do not have to be in person, they can be done virtually through one of the meeting apps available, on Facebook Live, by email or even conference calls. If you need sugges- tions of books that are conducive to a book study, please reach out to me at [email protected]. Our court has been doing book studies over the summer for four years now and it has been life-changing. I hope to see many of you at the National Convention in Dallas. Until then, stay safe, recharge and be joyful!

PLEASE PRAY FOR by Mary Lou Anderle ✝Please pray for the Holy Father, Pope Francis, that the Lord might grant him health and strength so that he may continue to spread the Word of God. ✝Please pray for wisdom of our elected officials and health officials as they lead our commu- nities and nations through this time of crisis. May they be good stewards of public resources and dedicate themselves to serving the common good. ✝Please pray for the protection of those who are placed in harm’s way through their service to the sick, es- pecially doctors, nurses, medical technicians, first responders and all medical personnel.

✝Please pray for all those suffering financially due to this crisis. May their anxious hearts be quieted by acts of generosity and compassion. ✝Please pray for all the sick, especially those who are suffering from the corona virus, that Christ the Good Physician might intervene and grant them healing and hope. ✝Please pray for all to have patience, compassion and mercy for one another as we tread through these un- chartered waters. We may all be in the same storm, but we are not in the same boat.

Anne Martin Read Across America Chairman 361-648-2008 [email protected]

By now it is evident that we are living in confusing times. To mask, or not to mask—that is just one of the questions. Physical distancing—how far, how long? Hoarding of essentials—toilet paper, water, canned goods, books. Books?? Of course books are essential, but I’d bet few peo- ple stocked up on them. Many of us are using this quarantine period to catch up on our own stash of “I’ll read these later” materials. Maybe some of us are spending more time reading to our children or grandchildren. Maybe they are reading to us—my grandson loves to face time and read his new story. These are just a few ways of promoting literacy, the backbone of Read Across America. During this most recent reporting period, I received just under 30 reports. Now, during these con- fusing times it is easy to forget that Read Across America is an annual report, and many courts have done some activity to promote literacy but forgot to report. It is not too late to submit a report, since the guidelines are flexible. If your court has not yet participated, it is not too late. Keep in mind that many local and school libraries have been af- fected during this time. Many have not been able to host a Book Fair, or other fundraiser. I ask you to review your budgets, and find a few dollars to donate. Then, let me know about it. If you can’t find the form to report, send me an e-mail ([email protected]) or give me a call (361/648-2008). Remember, literacy is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others. Won’t you help to ease the confu- sion by helping others learn?

June 2020 PAGE 10 Duchess Collins, State Chairman Ceremonials 832-567-6065 [email protected]

The installation of new officers is a very important ceremony with special significance to both the newly elected officers and the members. Officer installation is about the new officers who will lead their local court for the next two years. Let’s pray that our courts will be meeting again fol- lowing this COVID-19 virus to have a formal installation of officers. Article XIII Local Court Nominations and Elections Section 3 D – Pg. 39 Elections – Each officer shall assume the office to which she is elected with or without installation thirty (30) days following election. Section 4 – Pg. 39 Installation – Local Court installations shall take place no later than the regular September meeting. The responsibilities and oath of office should be stated with appropriate seriousness. The indications of specific duties are to remind the membership what each officer responsibilities will be. To begin, appoint a ceremonial coordinator who will contact the court Chaplain to set date and time of installation of the new officers. It is always a good plan to rehearse with court officers prior to installation so that all participants are aware of their re- sponsibilities and will present a memorable ceremony for those in attendance. Be present early on the day of ceremony in the event there may be some last-minute details. Make sure that the Regent’s gavel is available at the Installation Ceremony. Check and make sure all officer robes are hemmed properly, cleaned and pressed. Have the table for installation ready with the statue of the Blessed Mother, candles, and flowers. For more information on Ceremony for Court Room Installation of Officers, go to the Ceremonial section in the Tools of the Trade, Section IV, pages 4-1 to 4-11. Sample Opening Remarks by the Installing Officer: “Installing your newly elected officers is an integral part of our Order. It is time when leadership is passed from your current officers to a new set of officers eager to place their plans into action. It is also a time when the accomplishments of your present officers are recognized and thanked for a “job well done”. This ceremony is the beginning of a new year of fun and fellowship for everyone.” (From this point, go to the Installation script in the Tools of the Trade) Sample Closing Remarks by the Installing Officer: “Officers please accept my congratulations to each of you. May your term of office be one of deep satisfaction and provide you with the knowledge of a job well done. It was an honor to be your installing officer.” With everyone working together you will have a beautiful and memorable Installation of Officers.

Melissa Aguilar, Habitat for Humanity Chairman 903-263-9819 [email protected] Due to COVID-19 and the crazy amounts of rain, HFH house that was scheduled to be built by May 2020 has been delayed. As of April 23, HFH Executive Director Mary Wormington told me that the slab has not been poured yet because of the rain, and then quarantine was issued. The May 16th date to Raise the Walls was postponed. I will contact HFH next week for some updates. On another note, THANK YOU to the 87 courts who have sent in their donations for HFH. We have reached two-thirds of our goal. I am in the process of reaching out to the 158 courts who have not responded. Also, HFH t-shirts are available for $15 with a $5 shipping fee. Please email me for an or- der form at [email protected] or print the form off our website at www.texascda.org.

I hope and pray that you and your fam- ilies are staying safe and healthy. Directives have been put out by National that the court financial reviews for October 2019 through March 31, 2020 must be held in May 2020 (deadline June 1st). These must be hands on reviews – no Zoom meetings. After having a recent conversation with our State Regent Melodie Brunt, here are some suggestions. The review requires 4 people: your DD and 3 reviewers. You do not have to have anyone else there. Gather at a place you feel comfortable. The officers can drop off their books ahead of time and be availa- ble for questions by phone call. You would then only be in contact with 4 people. Make sure each of the reviewers is healthy. Each of the 4 reviewers should be bring their own supplies (like pens, rulers, calculator, post it notes), hand sanitizer, gloves, wipes and wear a mask. Bring your own snack and water. Be safe! District Deputies, please remember to send copies of the review to National, to our State Re- gent and our State Secretary. Keep a copy for yourself and your court officers. Congratulations to the newly elected court officers! The State has scheduled officer training workshops for this summer. When you go to an officers’ training workshop, you’ll learn about your duties, about good recordkeeping, and about the flow of cash in a court. The financial well-being of the court is in your hands. On Friday, March 13, 2020 the state financial review team met the State Board at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flatonia, Texas (home parish of State Treasurer Virginia Olsovsky) and reviewed the books for Oc- tober 2019 through February 2020. The books were found to be in good order, with some recommendations being made to the Board. The review of the March 2020 through May 2020 State books will be held in the Houston area on June 12, 2020. I hope you’re going to the national convention in Dallas, TX and I’ll see you there! We are so proud to be hosting this convention which will be led by our amazing National Regent Olga Samaniego! God bless!

Have you ever been accused of wearing rose-colored glasses? As an optimist, this has happened to me many times. Have you tried on those yellow or green tinted sunglass- es and seen how drastically they change the appearance of the world? What about your God glasses? Or maybe you want to call them your “Faith Focus”? It seems that with the world around us changing so quickly we need to adjust our spec- tacles. Many around us are reacting with fear, anger and hatred to the changes and trying times we find ourselves in. Are we being swept along or are we standing strong? As Christian women, our “Faith Focus” should be the strength that we rely on for our responses to the world. Our “Faith Focus” should change the world around us drastically when used appropriately. I am not saying that sometimes we won’t tremble. I am not saying that sometimes we won’t want to bust up some plates. (My grandma believed that this was great therapy and often bought plates at garage sales just for this purpose.) I am not saying that we won’t want to hide away from the world. I am just saying that we will take our moment, take a deep breath, take a knee and raise our eyes to our Lord and then get back up and make His world a better place. Our God tells us over and over in the Bible be not afraid. Our “Faith Focus” should help us move and adapt to the ever-changing circumstance we find ourselves in because the Lord has prepared the way for us. (He promised us this!) Be smart, be strong, be safe, and be the woman of God that you are called to be! My rose-colored glasses are working well with my “Faith Focus” and give me hope for our nation and our world. My prayer is that yours will too!

Catholic Daughters: During these past weeks, we have heard the clergy often tell us “Be Not Afraid.” Pope John Paul II uttered those words upon his election as pope and we, as Catholic Daugh- ters of the Americas, should take these words to heart. I encourage you to find peace in St. John Paul II’s words. State Memorial Scholarships: Because of the generosity of the Texas CDA courts, we awarded $44,000.00 to forty-six (46) worthy high school students, who are relatives of Texas CDA members! Winners are reminded that paperwork related to their enrollment at a college or university must be forwarded to me by July 1, 2020 in order that the checks can be sent in time for the Fall 2020 semester. I offer my most sincere congratulations to the courts who sponsored the students! Court Memorial Scholarship Contest. In addition to the State Scholarships, courts in the five (5) catego- ries were recognized for their contributions to the Memorial Scholarship Fund. Certificates and letters were sent to those winners. Congratulations courts and please continue to donate to this fund! Mass enrollments are $2.50 for the period of one (1) year. The Reverend Justin Braun, Texas State CDA Chaplain, remembers the intentions listed in the mass enrollments on the first Friday of each month. Please email at [email protected], text or call at 956-369-3048 or write me at 315 Alamo St., Edinburg, TX 78541 when you need mass cards. Memorial Mass Cards can be used for celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, and other mile- stones in the lives of your loved ones who may be living or deceased. Please make this worthy project one of your priorities this year. Memorial Scholarship Applications: The new application for the 2021 year will be available on or about July 1, 2020. The deadline for the scholarship applications will be January 31, 2021.

Mary Jane Albert State Newsletter Editor 281-381-0309 [email protected] It’s been a year since I took over the state newsletter project. Thank you for submit- ting articles on new courts, anniversaries, events from around the state, and retreats as well as the officer and chairmen articles. All members from around the State of Texas have gained very valuable information from your articles. We as members, as well as the officers and chairman, must continue to grow CDA in the State of Texas. When recruiting members and new courts, be prepared to hand them a copy of the Lone Star Messenger. This will be an invaluable tool to recruit- ment. When potential members see how they can be a part of this dynamic organiza- tion of Catholic women, what better way to entice them to become a part of CDA. I hope that each of you have enjoyed reading the newsletter. With your help in timely submitting articles and announcements I will continue to provide an informative and timely newsletter. This is your newsletter. You make the news. You write the articles and You contribute your time, talent and treasurers. You need to let the entire State of Texas know who you are and how you are promoting CDA in Texas. Please continue to send your newsletters to me as well as provide information on your special celebrations.

June 2020 PAGE 14 Mary Rose Barta Respect Life Chairman 361-798-6556 [email protected] Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service On March 25, 2020, the Church celebrated the 25th anniversary of the papal encyclical Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life). This prophetic document, written by a great saint of our time, Pope John Paul II, reaffirmed the church’s constant teaching on the value and inviolability of every human life. In honor of the 25th anniversary of this encyclical, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities has launched a nationwide effort entitled, Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service. This special anniversary year provides the church, as well as the Catholic Daughters, with an opportunity to assess, expand, and better communicate resources to preg- nant moms and families in need. They are in our parishes and our neighborhoods, but in desperation, they sometimes don’t know where to turn. Will you be there for them? Many of our CDA courts are already involved in supporting life in numerous ways. But, can we do more? That is a question only you and your court can answer. Visit Walking- WithMoms.com to learn more and to pledge to prayerfully walk with mothers in need. Us- ing this resource and other resources on the USCCB website you can look at what you are doing and possibly find other ways to help moms in need. Remember, we must love them both – mother and child.

Annunciation Maternity Home (Georgetown) has been a MOMS project since the beginning. Throughout the years, Texas CDA has taken an active role in its suc- cess. With our participation, AMH has helped to provide peace and security to young women facing crisis pregnancies with safe housing, opportunities to work and study, and support the needs of mothers as they raise their children. With this in mind, AMH is in desperate need of our financial help. In the wake of the COVID-19 coronavirus, the home has had to undertake changes in order to safeguard the health of the women and children and these precautions have created difficulties. AMH faces a significant shortfall in their budget due to the cancellation of their annual benefit dinner. In the past, quite a few of our CDA members have attended this gala contributing where they could. Now this mission is confronted with rising costs for safety measures. Many of the mothers are experiencing little work time which is vital to their personal growth on their journey to self-sufficiency. Let us recall the words of the Angel Gabriel to Mary: "Nothing is impossible with God." Every court can help by donating to Annunciation Maternity Home. A little bit can go a long way if we ALL contribute. So please, attending court meetings and taking action is difficult right now, but this will all end soon. Consider donating today. Please send your contribution to our state secretary Terrie Vacek, 12886 Aries Loop, Willis, TX 77318. Make a notation that it is for AMH. Terrie will gather all donations & the State Court will then mail all of our contributions to the home. Thank you for all that you do in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Cynthia Novak Missions of Ways & Means Chairman 979-968-3325 [email protected] Congratulations and welcome to the newly elected officers. Soon you will be planning your projects and budget for the next year. Please remember to include donations for the State Convention. Plans are to again have a Convention Raffle, Silent Auction and Lucky Lotto drawings. With the 2021 convention being less than a year away I am ea- ger to get started working on these fundraisers. In the meantime, your members can decide what your court will donate to the raffle. Several Courts or even Districts may want to get together and purchase or make an item. Cash donations are always accepted and will be combined to purchase gift cards. Com- plete details for the raffle and silent auction including the deadline to submit prizes, dis- tribution date for the tickets and deadline to return the sold tickets with the money will be given at a later date. With the help of all the Courts and CDA Members, we can make the 2021 Texas State Convention Fundraisers bigger and better than ever. Thank you in advance to all Texas CDA Members for your future donations to our fund- raisers! Look in the September Lone Star Messenger for details about a Statewide Fall Fundraiser. It’s going to be a Sparkling Jewel of a Good Time!

Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders. Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Jesus Christ, heal us.
