Clawton Parish Hall news from Maralyn Bailey The Committee have had a busy month that included the Country Rich musical evening which attracted people from all around the area. We made a profit of £317-60. Thanks to all the committee for making it a successful evening. Our October Wine and Wisdom is due to take place as this edition goes to print. Ian Parker, no doubt has entertained everyone as questionmaster, and as always I need to thank all those people who made this event a memorable evening.

November is a quieter month for us, although the Christmas tree will be decorated by the beginning of December ready for the bingo evening on Saturday 7th December ,doors open 6.30pm We will be arranging a pre-Christmas event with Dave at the brewery, I will give details next month.

As a committee we need to know what the community would like us to arrange for future months. If you have any ideas please email me on [email protected] For 2020 we intend holding two big breakfasts, we had taken a break from these during 2019, as the Church had already booked their two dates. We will also host our usual two wine and wisdom events The other big event we are in the process of organising will be a mid-summer music evening, as well as some other ideas for raising funds to improve and maintain this great village resource of the parish hall.

The drainage and tarmac issues are still on-going, it seems the weather has been against finishing the project, I do hope that this may be completed before the start of 2020. It is the intention of the three villages of North Tamerton, Tetcott and Clawton to form a group to each organise their programme of events so the dates do not clash.

A reminder that indoor bowls are held every Monday afternoon, in the Parish Hall and the bowlers would welcome any new members. They meet for 2.00 p.m. start and normally finish by 4.30pm Anyone interested please call in and see what the game is all about.

Inter Parish Walk report from Evelyn

I didn't need to know actual rainfall figures to know that we have had a LOT of rain in October.

Our ground is saturated at home & has quickly turned to mud. Given that our walk on Monday 14th October followed another deluge of rain overnight, I wasn't necessarily expecting many people to join me on our walk in . As 10 o'clock drew nearer, Daphne Nicholls was looking a bit worried. There was little evidence of walkers & she had arranged for Tina to lead the walk & for Ivy to bring up the rear. We were both somewhat relieved when there was suddenly quite a flurry of activity & a lot of people wearing wellies & stout walking boots emerged from the cars parked in The Square. In fact there were twenty three!! We headed north along the road towards Hartland & Meldon enjoying each other's company & the fact that we weren't getting wet. After a while Tina led us down a track on the left. It wasn't marked as a PROW (Public Right of Way) but apparently it is classed as a "green lane". It was decidedly muddy but everybody had stout footwear & we sploshed our way towards Dinworthy Farm. We then joined a lane and headed to the left which subsequently brought us back to the road opposite Crosspark. It was just a short stroll back to The Square and we were treated to refreshments in the Collacott Room of the Village Hall by Daphne and Jenny. For those that are not aware, this room is used to store local archive material and is open on Wednesday mornings (10am - 12.00) for anybody that is interested.

Our next walk will be on Monday 11th November. We will set off from Higher Larkworthy Farm (EX22 5DE) near . Please contact me if you would like directions or any more information.

Ode: To fly a Spitfire – with thanks to Les Johnson

For I have slipped the surly bonds of mother Earth And danced the skies on laughter gilded wings Sunwards I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun – split clouds, and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I’ve chased the shouting wind aloft, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I’ve topped the wind swept heights with easy grace Where never (sky)lark or ever eagle flew The high untrespassed virgin space

And, whence with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

“If you have been there you will know exactly what I mean”
