St Leonard's Church Thought for the month – Rev Jane Lucas

Dear Friends, As you will no doubt have heard, I am set to retire as Rector for the Benefice on the 31st of May 2019. There are to be changes in the way we minister around the parishes, therefore from January 2019 there is to be a new pattern of services which mean that there will no longer be a service every week in St. Leonard’s, Clawton. The new pattern of services reflect the need to spend time and build up relationships between the Church family of this Benefice, through worshipping together and getting to know people within the ‘family.’ You will notice that there will be services on Wednesdays, Saturdays as well as Sundays giving greater flexibility to everyone. As to what happens after May 2019 , that will depend on you and your willingness to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to serve one another here and in the wider community. Wishing everyone in the Parish a very Happy, Healthy and Peaceful Christmas and New Year. Blessings, Rev. Jane

Report from Chairman – Paul Grafton

Armistice Service and Tea

We all assembled at the War Memorial then repaired to the hall for the second part of the service and a tea. We raised £65 for the Royal British Legion.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed goodies towards the tea, who helped install the bunting and set out tables and chairs and who manned the kitchen serving tea and washing up.

We’d also like to thank Katherine Smith who designed the two Armistice figures and the poppies displayed by the village noticeboard and Dave Newbury who cut out and painted them.

Village Website

We’re working on making sure the website has all relevant information and is fully up-to-date. Part of this process is getting Google to index it. We have a new shorter address – www.clawton.org.uk – but the old one still works.

Any organisations who would like to expand their entry to show meeting dates and times, officers, contact details and any photos please email [email protected]. If a nominated person would like the details of how to change their content Paul is happy to provide the login and password and a brief guide to editing the site.

Parish Hall News – From Maralyn Bailey – Chair

Thanks to everyone who helped in any way at the Wine and Wisdom event in October. A profit of £390 was raised towards the Hall tarmac project.

The committee are grateful to Torridge, Tetcott Community Fund, and Pete Watson's Local councillor fund. We now have enough funds to get the tarmac project under way. We are awaiting the plumber to update the sink. Once this is done, our dish washer will be installed. Our electrician will be installing a new exterior light along with the supply for the defibrillator unit. The defibrillator will then follow soon after. Progress has been a little slow but we are achieving our aims.

I would also like to give thanks to Cheryl for the knitted poppies she made for our tribute to the fallen, which I am hoping to place in the church. Made in two shades of red as I had a slight hand in the making of them.

Don’t forget our December event – Bingo on 8th December, doors open at 6.30pm with great raffle and prizes

As always I thank everyone especially Ruth, Henry and committee members for their continued support. Also thanks to our fantastic community for their support too.

Holsworthy Amateur Theatrical Society

HATS Theatre will be holding auditions for children for our May production of Goodnight Mr Tom on 12th January 2pm at the theatre. We are looking for both boys and girls who will look 10 to 12 years old in May 2019.

If interested please contact Eve Earles on 01409 220293 or Peter Whitehead on 01409 254748

The Arscott Arms

The Arscott Arms at Chapmans Well has been completely refurbished inside and out and is now open. There is also a new decking area ready for the summer.

The emphasis is on a warm welcome from Renate (known as Narty), her husband Mark (chef) and their staff, and on food.

It’s also literally a warm welcome because the radiators are on and the log burners are burning! I’ve been there for dinner twice in the last two weeks and recommend you give it a try. See www.arscottarms.co.uk for opening times and menus. (Paul Grafton)

Neighbourhood Watch, Speedwatch and Horsewatch from and Police

Neighbourhood watch – PCSO Mark James would like anyone interested in this to contact him. Colin Burton , who has now moved, was the local contact and Clawton village really needs someone to keep this alive.

Speedwatch Scheme – Anyone interested in taking part in using a speed gun to deter speeding in Clawton please contact PCSO 30643 Mark James on [email protected] or go to www.devon-cornwall.police.uk. Villages that have a regular presence of local speedwatch activity have noticed a decline in speeding through their villages.

PCSO Emma TOMKIES, based in Holsworthy, is the Devon coordinator for Devon and Cornwall Horse Watch.

Horse Watch is a scheme which operates in a similar way to Neighbourhood Watch. This scheme is run for, and by, members of the equestrian community. As a member you will be able to directly influence the dissemination and collection of information about equestrian related issues to prevent and deter crime. Some questions I like to ask horse owners are;

Could my horse or pony be easily identified by someone who is not familiar with it? Say for instance a Police officer or Horse Watch member.

How soon would I notice my horse or pony to be missing? The sooner we are alerted to a missing horse, the more likely we are to locate them.

If I accidently locked my car keys in my tack room, how easily could I gain access to them if I desperately needed to do so? If someone else wanted the high value tack inside, they could get in exactly the same way.

The benefits of Horse Watch are;

It increases the prevention and detection of equine related crimes

It increases community engagement between individual members, the police and other equine related groups.

You will get own Horse Watch Sign to make sure any opportunist thieves are aware that you are part of a vigilant equine community.

We offer FREE tack marking and Security advice for your yard, with access to Police recommended security items.

It gives members access to Devon and Cornwall Alert, a two way community messaging system operated by Devon and Cornwall Police.

You will also receive advice on how to register your horse, property and tack and to search for details of stolen property before buying equipment.

It is very easy to become a member, and is all free. Just contact me on the details below.

I am also very interested in attending any shows, groups or sales that you think would be relevant for my role, so please let me know Contact details – PCSO 30538 Emma TOMKIES Email - [email protected] 7

Inter Parish Walk

Our last walk for this year was on Monday 12th November. I had received a special request to walk a particular footpath in . I knew that we had not walked it for three years & that several “new people” would not have walked it previously, so I was keen to oblige. Gill Aston very kindly liaised with local land owners about their livestock that would normally be grazing those particular fields. She also advised Nick Lock, the local P3 (Parish Paths Partnership) volunteer as he had mentioned needing to deal with a “sticky gate” along the route. All seemed to be in place & then …………. The heavens opened for several consecutive days during the previous week!!! I was somewhat concerned as it isn’t everybody’s choice to walk along a footpath across squelchy fields. The day itself dawned sunny & bright. Twenty of us, including Rusty who is very aptly named, met at Pyworthy village hall. We set off in the direction of the Molesworth Arms & then headed towards Hoppatown. If you look at the map, the lane sort of runs parallel with the footpath & so I was able to give everybody a choice. They could follow the footpath across the fields & rejoin the lane at the electricity sub-station. By turning left, they would then find the Old Rectory on their left. Alternatively, they could follow the lane & by turning right at the T-junction would find the Old Rectory on their right. The plan came together so that we could all choose our preferred terrain according to our footwear & we all met up again before too long. Bearing in mind that the sun was shining, we didn’t need much encouragement to follow the next footpath towards Crinacott Farm. It is a concrete drive initially & then the footpath cuts across by the solar panels on the left, across a couple of fields & rejoins the lane at Yeomadon. These fields were relatively dry underfoot. It was a shame that at this point the heavens opened & we tended to keep our heads down rather than admire the view back towards St. Swithun’s Church in Pyworthy. Thankfully it didn’t last for long & we were all prepared for it in our various coats. The lanes were quiet & it was a nice stroll back to our cars albeit up hill initially. I think everyone enjoyed the walk but I am sure those that chose to walk along the lane rather than the footpath will wonder what they missed, ha ha.

I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in these walks over the last ten months. I am always very pleased to have company. It is very nice to meet new people & equally nice to renew my acquaintance with familiar faces. Your willingness to join me whatever the weather, whatever the terrain & your eagerness to assist me with trimming annoying brambles is very much appreciated. I also owe a big thank you to those that have kindly devised the routes & led the walks in the Parishes of Thornbury, Halwill, , & Pyworthy. You are far more familiar with your local area than I am & I am very grateful to you for your kind assistance. I am always happy to lead the walks myself but if anyone in the Parishes of Clawton, or would like to lead them next year, please let me know. I must also thank the local land owners who are so accommodating when it comes to parking on their property & making provision with their livestock.

The timing is such that I will take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Christmas. I will be in touch before too long with the programme of walks for next year. The first walk will be on Monday 11th February 2019. Evelyn Sharman Tel: 01409 259 848
