CLAWTON CLARION August 2019

Welcome to the August 2019 edition of the Clarion. While many of us work even harder over the summer months, I’m sure we all remember the long school holidays full of sunshine and fun; and wish the same for all our children and grandchildren. Perhaps some of the children or young people would like to write a short poem or contribution for the next edition of the Clarion! Thank you for all your contributions to the Clarion this month – it is lovely to involve all members of our community. Don’t forget, the Clawton Clarion is about YOU and YOUR COMMUNITY so please send contributions for the next edition by 20th August 2019 to [email protected] or call me, Judi Graham: 01409 271265 If you would like to receive the Clarion electronically, send me your e mail address

Poem for the month of August – with thanks to Les Johnson

A poem to make you smile

DAISY THE COW WAS AN UDDER DISGRACE.

I bought some strawberry plants last year I wish I hadn’t done it. The slugs have eaten all of them I should have bought a punnet

To accompany them I’d bought a cow – I thought I’d make some cream. She looked so very happy But whilst I was watching tennis Unaware she’d caused such troubles I heard a fearsome scream. Munching on some home – grown leeks And blowing methane bubbles! My neighbour’s fence was flattened, His greenhouse was no more. Sadly Daisy had to go Prize-winning orchids scattered, Before she caused more harm Pots broken on the floor. I sold her down the Market To a man from a petting farm. Flower beds were trampled But the lawn had come off worse. She’s enjoying life on the farm I’m told The neighbour went berserk – And she’s quite a celebrity You should have heard him curse. She’s best friends with a donkey, And gives rides to the kids for free. ‘Cause there amongst the debris And the washing disarray My neighbour built a ten foot wall Sat Daisy in the Jacuzzi I think that’s quite extreme. Draped in a negligee. This year I’ll go to Wimbledon For my strawberries and cream

Hot Gossip

At last – we have heaters installed under every pew. There are 2 heaters per row. The sound of chattering teeth should no longer drown out the sermon.

Clawton Parish Hall news from Maralyn Bailey.

I write this after our Fun Afternoon, which turned out to be blessed with wonderful weather after the downpours of the day before! Due to family commitments, there were less of the committee members in attendance than usual but I extend thanks to the outer circle of helpers for their assistance, we couldn’t have achieved the results without them. The numbers attending the event were lower than we would have hoped, but having said that the children had lots of fun and laughter on the water slide and bouncy castle. We thank Anthony Barriball and Steve Bailey for the invaluable assistance in preparing, setting up and operating the water slide. There was huge competition for the children’s darts the winner of which scored more than the adults!!

Can I please ask all users of the hall to write in the diary any observations regarding the hall's day to day running, or make a committee member aware of any concerns or comments. We cannot rectify concerns if these are not notified via the diary.

My report for the Clarion is usually positive and upbeat, but this month it will be written with disbelief and sadness. The hall committee and other helpers have pulled together and given up their time freely to improve the facilities in and around the hall for everyone to enjoy. The latest improvement is the painting of the exterior of the hall and during August (weather permitting) the tarmac project will be undertaken, but lately the caretakers and myself have noted that many items from the kitchen have been taken. I realise this will sound stupid but things like the roll of blue paper (a legal requirement for the hall kitchen), tea bags & coffee have disappearedalong with cleaning materials such as fairy liquid. This is after the supply of toilet rolls had to be locked away, as they were going to a “new home”. I find it so hard to understand just why someone would want to do such things, if anyone has any information about these petty thefts please let me know.

I personally feel extremely angry and sad that some users of the hall can behave so poorly. I think it is like stealing from your family.

Inter Parish Walk report from Evelyn

On Monday 8th July, eighteen of us met at East Vognacott near Chilsworthy. The owner had very kindly given us permission to park in the yard which enabled us to enjoy a very pleasant circular walk. It included two of the footpaths in & a short distance along the lane that runs between Honeycroft Cross & the entrance to Gearns Farm near Holsworthy Beacon. It was a good opportunity to see the result of the drainage work that was undertaken nearly three years ago. Prior to this, the footpath was liable to flooding even in the summer months. We were watched closely by the land owner's White Park cattle as we headed towards Scorphill. According to Census documents, there used to be a farm worker's cottage here but there is no evidence of it now. A contractor engaged by County Council (DCC) had recently cut back the undergrowth along the "green lane" which was great timing! I think my secateurs would have struggled with the recent rapid growth of the brambles. Earlier in the year DCC had also provided funding so that two stiles could be replaced with self-closing gates. This made our progress much easier especially on such a hot day. As we walked up hill across the fields, there were lots of butterflies & when we looked back there were great views of Dartmoor. The whole walk took us about two hours & I think everyone was looking forward to a cold drink & a relaxing afternoon after our exertions in the sunshine.

Our next walk will be on Monday 12th August. We will set off at 10am from Lower Tamar Lake car park (EX22 7LB) & walk approximately six miles along the feeder arm of the Bude Canal as far as Burmsdon Bridge. I would be grateful if anyone wishing to join me could let me know by Monday 5th August as I will need to arrange transport from Vealand back to our cars. I would recommend bringing a snack as this is quite a long walk & we will walk at a leisurely pace.
