The Borders of the Tamar and Tavy (Mrs Bray) This book is in the form of letters that were written by Mrs Bray to Robert Southey. These give detailed descriptions of such diverse subjects as: The Damnonii and their Castle, Rock Basins, Mists of Dartmoor, The Warren, Brigadier Herring, Monasteries, Tomb of Orgar, Hermitage of St. John, Edward Smith, The Great Rebellion, The Atkynses, And many, many more. £7.50 Devon Lay Subsidy Rolls 1543 – 1545 (Edited by T L Stoate) This is a CD of the surviving Subsidy Rolls of Devon, but does not include Exeter, because its 1544 roll has been transcribed by Mrs Rowe in the "Tudor Exeter" (Devon and Cornwall Record Society. Volume 22, 1977). There are many thousands of people listed usually giving their parish and the value that the person is assessed at. Fully indexed and searchable. £7.50 Devon Lay Subsidy Rolls 1524 – 1527 (Edited by T L Stoate) The Subsidy rolls of 1524 - 27 are, with a few exceptions, the first taxation lists giving the names of the inhabitants since the subsidy of 1332. This transcript was edited and published by T.L. Stoate. It names all of those on the Roll along with their class of taxation. £7.50 The Devon Muster Roll for 1569 (Edited by T L Stoate and A J Howard) On March 26th 1569 the Council issued a directive to the counties to hold a general muster of all men over 16, appointing commissioners in each county. Certificates of the muster, with the names of the men and their equipment, were to be returned by July 1st though this was later extended to August 12th. This CD contains a searchable transcript for Devon of this Muster. £7.50 Devon Parishes (By Charles Worthy) Parishes included: Bickleigh, Sheepstor, Walkhampton, Buckland Monachorum, Meavy, St. Peter Tavy, Maristow, Thrushelton, Lamerton, Lidford, Milton Abbot, Ashprington, Dartmouth, Broadhempston, Littlehempston, Wolborough, Hennock, North Bovey, Lustleigh, Denbury, South Brent, Harford, Shaugh, Kingsteignton, Highweek with Newton Bushel, Tormohun and St. Marychurch. £10.00 Devon Taxes 1581 – 1660 (Edited by T L Stoate) Throughout history monarchs and governments have needed to raise money for various causes. This is usually done by way of subsidies or taxes and of course lists had to be made of those who paid or were liable to these taxes. This CD contains the lists of those, in Devon, who were eligible for a number of taxes between the years of 1581 and 1660. £7.50 Gems in a Granite Setting (William Crossing) Anyone who has previously taken an interest in the life and history of Dartmoor will be familiar with the names of Beatrice Chase and Sabine Bearing-Gould. One other must also be added to this illustrious list and that is William Crossing. He is now considered one of the best authorities on Dartmoor and its antiquities, having made it the subject of his life's work and his writings being as popular, and relevant, today as they have ever been. Numerous subjects, photographs and locations are covered in the book. Some of these are Sir Thomas Wise, Black Tor Copse in the Seventeenth Century, Lustleigh Cleave, the Bovey Tracey River, the Manor of Spitchwick and many others. £7.50 Historical Records Of the 1st Devon Militia (4th Batt. Devon Reg) (Colonel H Walrond) This book published in 1897 traces the history of the regiment from its earliest origins to 1896. Its 400+ pages are divided into chronological sections that give a great deal of information as to the location of the company and the day to day activities. There are a number of illustrations and the appendix gives lists of various ranks and officers. £7.50 North Tawton Parish Registers (Edited by T.L. DESCRIPTION Ebenezer is a beautiful stone chapel that was originally built in 1823 and converted to a private dwelling house in the early 2000s. The conversion included major remedial works to the roof, windows, electrics and plumbing and of course the interior design.

    Parish Magazine Ashprington Cornworthy Dittisham May 2021 Away with the Fairies in 1917. My three year old granddaughter Lily loves fairy stories and so, apparently, did Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. He totally believed in the Cottingley Fairies. In 1917 two talented cousins, Elsie Wright (16) and Frances Griffiths (9), borrowed their father's camera and went down through the bottom of the garden to Cottingley Beck, a stream near Bradford in Yorkshire. There Elsie took five photographs, beautifully composed, showing her cousin Frances watching with a rapt expression a group of fairy folk dancing in front of her. Other photographs showed fairies flying around and a gnome on the grass. The whole process took about half an hour. Such was the skill of the girls' composition that Elsie's mother believed that the little figures really were fairies. Her father, who developed the images, did not believe they were real and considered that the girls had used cardboard cut outs of fairies in the photographs. He refused to lend them his camera again. Elsie's mother Polly was a Theosophist. She went to a meeting in Bradford which happened to be about fairies. She told the president of the Harrogate Theosophists, Edward Gardner, about the photographs and he examined them. Having pronounced them genuine he later contacted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a well known Spiritualist, who was writing a piece on fairies for the 1920 Christmas edition of the Strand Magazine. Doyle was totally convinced that the images were real and asked permission to use them in his article.

    Shaping our communities to 2031 Regulation 19 Publication Version February 2015 West Devon - A Leading Rural Council Foreword Welcome to ‘Our Plan’, a new strategic plan for West Devon. Whilst the Core Strategy was a plan for future growth and development to take us from 2006 to 2026, since it was written planning policy has undergone some significant changes as set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and we need to ensure our plans are fit for purpose and in conformity with this national policy. This new plan also has to cover a wider range of issues that go beyond traditional planning policy and it makes more sense to write a new plan rather than try and amend the existing ones. Therefore, ‘Our Plan’ will be the overarching strategic plan for the Borough of West Devon up to 2031. Developing a new plan is always challenging and it is often controversial with different sectors and individuals in our communities understandably seeing things from their own view point. However, we need to remember that we are planning for the communities of tomorrow not just for ourselves today. What we do now will have a significant impact on how people live their lives in West Devon in the future. Our biggest challenge is enabling growth and providing much needed homes and jobs whilst, at the same time, protecting the beautiful place that is West Devon - no mean feat as I’m sure you can appreciate. To do this we have gathered and considered evidence about local need and the views and comments shared by you and a wide range of partners during the process have helped us to shape a plan that we believe takes account of local needs and aspirations.

    Blackawton Beacon June 2019 published jointly by the Parochial Church Council and the Parish Council Sustainable Blackawton from Robin Mewes, James Perry, Sue Hadow, Jan Scott and others A few years ago Blackawton had an informal environmental group which aimed to raise awareness about sustainable issues and promote actions and projects that could support the long term sustainability of the Blackawton community. Recently a few of us met and suggested that it might be a suitable time to relaunch such a group as a community-led development. The idea has been brought to the Parish Council as well as to Blackawton School and it is hoped that many will support the initiative. Some of the proposals could be the establishment of a community woodland area, a community car sharing scheme and regular suggestions on how to reduce the carbon footprint. An informal meeting for anyone who is interested is arranged for: Wednesday 5th June at 7.00 pm in the Village Hall Please come along with any ideas you have and share the vision of growing Blackawton as a Sustainable Community Teddy Bears' Parachute Jump from Kate Janman Sunday 9th June at 2.30 pm Bring your friends, and all their teddies with their parachutes to church and watch them jump!
