6 County & Communit y Council Election 2012

I was very grateful and honoured to stand unopposed at the elections and would like to thank everyone for their support and good wishes. It was great to be able to use the time getting on with job, hekping residents with problems and sorting out all my paperwork ready for the new term rather than having to go round canvassing, it was much appreciated.

It is a job I really enjoy doing, it’s varied and flexible and although by choice I spend more than the average working week carryi ng out my duties, I can fit it around family life and because it’s so varied it’s not a chore; I never know what to expect when the phone rings or I check my emails ! The best feeling is when I’ve been able to make a difference by helping someone or raisin g issues on behalf of residents at committees I sit on and changing policies and helping to deliver projects with my fellow community council, community association and other committee members .

As well as being Treuddyn County Councillor, I am also a memb er of Treuddyn Community Counci l, Llanfynydd Community Council (Pontybodkin Ward ), Hafan Deg Association, St Mary’s Church PCC, I am a governor at Parc y Llan and Castell Alun (although I try to support Ysgol Terrig equally in my role as County Councillor ), I’m a member of Treuddyn bowling club and secretary of Treuddyn Community Association. I also produce the Treuddyn and Llanfynydd Community Council newsletters. At Flintshire County Council I am on the Environment and Lifelong Learning scrutiny committ ees and a sub on the planning committee. I am a fully trained up member but am substituting this year as I have been elected as Vice Chair of the County Counc il which is a great honour. The Chair is on holiday for the next three weeks so it will certainly be an experience. I also sit on a few outside bodies including the Clwydian and Dee Valley Range of Outstanding Natural Beauty which includes parts of Flintshire, and . I also sit on grant funding bodies such as the Flintshire Rural Partnership and Cadwyn which means I’m aware of what grants are available but then end up ha ving to declare an interest a lot of the time while applications are being discussed! I am also lead M ember for Biodiversity and champion for rural areas and the natural environment always trying to make sure that rural areas like ours get a fair deal .

The Community Councillors in Treuddyn were also all unopposed as there were more seats available than those that submitted election forms. Congratulations sho uld also go to them as well beca use it has been team work delivering many good schemes in the last four years.

Also a major contributor to the Community Council team is our Clerk, Kay (Carolyn Thomas) who is very knowledgeable and gives us good guidance.

Thanks again to everyone for your best wishes, I am very honoured to be able to continue in my role and will d o the best I can with enthusiasm , dedication and passion.

Carolyn

8 Queen Street Play Area & Bike Track

During the Summer term to encourage fair play in the park

Play Leaders will visit the park two evenings per week to interact with the children and involve everyone in g ame play. The Primary Schools will be visited during lunch times. The Summer Playscheme would run three days per week, in which would be afternoon sessions.

Did you know that Clark & Kent who built the bike track have just built the Olympic BMX track? The Community Council have been waiting for them to do the annual maintenance work on the bike track but they have been so busy building tracks all over the world. T hey eventually found time a few weeks ago after completing the Olympic track.

9 Coaching will be starting up again soon with Bob and Ally – look out for posters.

…. And the ladies bike cours will restart on Friday 8 th June and then every two weeks thereafter until mid August. Meet 6.30 pm Queen Street car park. Contact Simon, Paula or Mar ia for further information.

10 Coed Talon Play area

Both play areas in the settlement area of Coed Talon and Pontybodkin are important as somewhere safe to play away from the busy road.

Pontybodkin is very popular for children to come and go as they p lease in an easily visible location. The play area will soon be getting new play equipment and fencing thanks to a significant Aggregates Levy Fund for grant; this was possible because of the effects of quarrying and quarries lorries through the vil lage.

Coed Talon play area by the old school is a wonderful, open space ideal for playing ball games as it is away from houses in a natural setting. Many football teams from neighbouring villages come to practice here.

The Community Council have been a sked by Coed Talon residents if investment could now be made in that play area. The children would have like to have a zip line in Pontybodkin but there was not enough flat space so it is hoped to have one installed in Coed Talon. Improvements also need to be made to the fencing and investment in new play items.

There is a sum of money available for play equipment from the Pennaf development and as Queen Street play area has had a lot of recent grant funding, we are hoping that the money can be used to i mprove the Coed Talon play area which also falls within the ward of Treuddyn.

11 Treuddyn Shop & Post Office

I met with Dilip Odera and his brother who are buying the shop in Ffordd y Llan. They recently sold a shop in Rhyl to Tescos Express and have got a franchise for the shop in Treuddyn. It will be a `Lifestyle Express’ shop which is in the same group of retail outlets as `Spar’. They gave me a copy of a sample offer leaflet. They told me the shop will open as soon as possible within the next few we eks and the plan is to possibly slightly extend to the side in 12 months time and to increase the car parking space to the front where there is a piece of grass. The brother that will manage the shop will rent somewhere locally. They are looking to open the shop from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm depending on demand. Plans are to reopen the post office there as soon as possible.

12 If you want to report a faulty light, blocked highways drain, potholes, grass cutting, problems with litter and dog fouling or contact pest control

Phone 701234

When reporting faulty street lights you will need to give the location and, if possible, lamp number which is on the column. The operator may say that the light belongs to the Community Council but insist they log the fault as Treuddyn Community Council has a contract with Flintshire County Council street lighting for them to look after those lights as well as the ones owned by the County Council.

When you phone the Streetscene number, the call will be logged and an email sent to our area supervisor, Dave Bell with a copy to the Area Manager.

Dave Bell and I went on a t our of the ward of Treuddyn to do an EVA (Envionmental Visual Audit), l ooking at areas that needed improving such as resurfacing of roads or tidying of highway v erges, clearing of footpaths, etc.

The dog waste bin at the top of Fford d y Llan has been removed because it was outside the window of residential properties. Under Streetscene there will no longer be one person whose job it is to empty all dog waste bins in Flintshire, there will be area teams who will have generic job descr iptions including emptying all the bins in their area. FCC are not going to be installing any more specific dog waste bins but putting stickers on general waste bins.

13 The idea is that you can put dog waste in any bin as long as it is bagged because currently all the litter from the bins and dog waste goes to landfill. I put a notice on the general waste bin saying that could b e used for dog waste but then there was a problem because it was getting filled with just dog waste including from resident’s gardens that had used the dog bin before.

The idea is that if all bins are used as general waste bins then if there are just two or three bags of dog waste amongst other rubbish then it won’t smell or be a problem. Also, residents can put bagged dog waste from their gardens into their own black residual waste wheelie bin.

Looking for a different solution , I met with Gary Downi e in Treuddyn. He has had a lot of press coverage regarding a Community Interest Company and social enterprise he has set up called `StreetKleen’ aimed at tackling persistent dog fouling in our Communities. He started it off because he wanted to do somet hing about the dog fouling in his community of Broughton.

Streetkleen aims to replace the current dog bin and plastic bag with a waste receptacle and biodegradable bags with the intention of diverting dog waste away from landfill and recycli ng it to creat e usable energy. Gary want s to co llect dog waste and turn it into biogas using the process of anaerobic digestion.

14 Anaerobic digestion is the natural breakdown of organic materials into methane and carbon dioxide gas and fertiliser. It can be used in st ationary engines to generate electricity but is not suitable as vehicle fuel. One bag of dog waste can generate enough electricity to boil a kettle for two cups of tea.

Currently, responsible dog owners pick up their dog waste in plastic bags – Gary says this advice must be changed to BIODEGRADABLE BAGS. Currently in the UK 98% of street clean residue dog waste is sent to landfill in plastic bags, this only mummifies the contents as the plastic bag may take 100 years+ to degrade.

Changing current advic e from plastic bags to collecting dog waste in biodegradable bags is central to Streetkleen . The collection of dog waste in biodegradable bags enables a natural decomposition of the contents and also raises the potential for recycling dog waste to create u sable energy.

I have been asked by a resident to raise about bags of dog waste being left in trees and hedges in rural locations b ecause there are no dog bins. This is another good reason to use biodegradable bags or to use the `stick and flick’ policy that Forestry Commission advise in rural areas where there are no pavements t so the waste can be broken down naturally.

The dog warden told me that a questionnaire was returned to her saying that the cost of having to pay for carrier bags was a deterren t from picking up dog waste but dog waste bags are inexpensive and much easier to carry around than normal carrier bags. It is possible to buy 50 bi odegradable, scented bags for £1.

Treuddyn has been a lot better recently with not so much dog waste left on the pavements and that has been appreciated by residents.

It is still being kept under surveillance by teams as a `hot spot’ area.

15 I noticed yesterday (Sunday morning) that a IT IS ILLEGAL TO resident was picking up litter around the DROP LITTER OR village. It is really encouragin g to see NOT TO CLEAN UP people that care about the community they AFTER YOU DOG live in taking the time to do that, I know THIS CAN INCUR AN there are a quite a few as well as those that ON THE SPOT FINE drop litter. I am amazed how many empty OF £75 OR UP TO `energy’ drink cans I pick up, obviously it £1000 IF TAKE N TO mustn’t work as they don’t seem to have COURT. enough energy to carry them to the bin!

PC Gary Aldous is the CBM who will be covering our area along with PCSO Andrea Ellis.

16 `Bro Brwynog’ Pennaf and Lovells housing development in Treuddyn

The development is moving on extremely quickly. The houses pictured here near the entrance off Ffordd y Rhos will be 2 semi - detached 3 bedroom houses for sale by Lovells at market price. I believe they will be the show homes.

The heavy rain caused problems and water was pumped into th e surface wate r drain to clear it from the site. Unfortunately , the amount of clay and silt in the water which could be seen off Church Walk and in Nant Byr along the Corwen Road caused concern for the Environment Agency and the developers were asked to stop.

Opposit e is a copy of the site plan without the house descriptions on so I could fit it on the page. The plan can be seen on the Treuddyn website www.treuddyn.org.uk and I’ve put copies in noticeboards. Let me know if you would like me to print you one off. 17 18 There has been a lot of interest in the development of 41 houses, especially the 18 which have been allocated for rent or `affordable ownership/part buy’. I was told there were 38 names on the list, all classed as local. Th e DDA bungalows have already been allocated to families in the village , the rest have yet to be allocated.

Work has started on the layby which will provide parking for the cemetery and mitigation for loss of parking for the chapel. This was agreed during pre -planning discussions. A provision also had to be made for a pavement linking from the development. The new kissing gate along the footpath from Queen Street to Ffordd y Rhos will hopefully mean that there will now be pushchair and wheelchair access, although the kissing gate at the Ffordd y Rhos end and steps may need altering once they’ve been assessed. Thanks to Community Councillor, Gill Short for sorting out installation of the gate.

I’m still waiting for Flintshire County Council Cemeteries d epartment to come back to me regarding works to the extension area.

Scottish power has been doing some cabling works regarding the site. There was concern with work they had proposed to do but after meeting with residents an alternative solution was fo und.

19 We’re still waiting for the results of the plans drawn by AECOM to see if grant funding will be given for the schemes in Ffordd y Gilrhos and Ffordd y Rhos. I have been told that Paul Bolton, a Flintshire County Council Officer did previously put forward an application on behalf of residents but it got rejected because the cost outweighed the benefit.

A copy of the feasibility study report undertaken by DCWW was sent to FCC drainage officers. I met with one of them and he said that it was more or less implying that capacity can be increased at the treatment facility by employing a manual operator to keep the pipes unclogged and flowing freely. So much for technology and automated systems! I did reply that in this day and age that solution wasn’t really adequate but have not had a response.

The development of Cae Mynach, DCWW now admit has less chance of getting the grant funding to connect to the main treatment facility because their septic tank system is working adequately and there have been no reports from the Environment Agency to state otherwise. I have tried to make a case that a separate sceptic tank facility was installed because the advice at the time was the Treuddyn treatment facility was up to capacity.

From 1 st October 2011 any private sewer excluding pumping stations and highway drains or sewers situated within DCWW sewerage area and communicates with a public sewer and any private lateral drain will transfer to DCWW and become a public sewer.

One good thing that has come from all the meetings with Welsh Water is that I have been introduced to a local DCWW employee, Ronnie Kelbrick has been very helpful sorting out local drainage issues and offering to help resolve any misconnections.

Besides having contamination in the waterco urse of silt from the new development there has also been a discharge of diesel during one weekend which has caused concern.

If you notice anything call the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.

20 In Ffordd y Bont , Pontybodkin , the heavy rains caused prob lems with the drains unable to cope, flooding the lane and leaving debris. Since the reconstruction of the bridge, the surface water drain has not worked properly. Streetscene supervisors Dave Bell and Bill Jones have agreed that remedial work needs doin g and are looking into doing the works. This will probably mean a road closure, digging up the road and putting the drain diagnally across the road so will take a while to organise.

A lot of debris came down the Nant Byr and was reported to the Enviro nment Agency. They said that as long as the water can still flow through they would have to wait until levels decrease before clearing it and they would also pass this on to Flintshire County Council to do.

21 Residents of Ffordd y Bont, Pontybodkin which i s split between the wards of Treuddyn and Llanfynydd have also asked if the wooden fencing can be replaced near th e junction with Pontbodkin Hill as it looks so untidy. This sectio n on the other side of the bridge over the Nant comes under Llanfynydd Comm unitiy Counc il . Flintshire County Council will only do work to ensure the fence is sa fe.

Three quotes have been acquired by the Pontybodkin Community Councllors for green metal hoop top fencing similar to that which will be installed at Pontybodkin play a rea. A grant application has been submitted to Cadwyn Clwyd in the hope that they may help with funding, match funding will be sought from Llanfynydd Community Council.

22 Treuddyn Cemetery Memorial Testing Programme 2012/12

Flintshire County Council w ill be commencing this year’s programme of Memorial Safety inspections during June 2012 and Treuddyn will be one of the three on the list.

Each memorial in the cemetery will be tested using a consistent method. The inspections will be undertaken by exper ienced staff who have completed memorial safety inspection training and are fully competent in this sensitive area of work.

If a memorial is identified as unsafe but does not represent an immediate danger, the Counicl will attempt to the contact the Regi stered Grave Owner prior to arranging for a temporary supp ort to be erected behind the sto ne, a notice will be placed at the back of the memorial to inform families that the Authority have been unable to make contact with, what has happened, and who to con tact.

If any me morials identified as unsafe are too large to be temporarily secured they will be laid flat on wooden blocks with a notice place don the memorial and, where possible, grave owners will be contacted.

23 It is important that the Council comple tes this work to ensure the safety of all who visit and work in our cemeteries. We would like to assure families that the Council is very aware of the concerns the bereaved may have and the work will be completed in a respectful manner.

Further informatio n on the Council’s memoria safety programme is available by contacing the Bereavement Services Officer on 01352 7703360 or 703361 or 703362..

Development Concerns currently unfounded for Land by the Vicarage / Vicarage Walk

Some residents h ave raised concerns that the land by the vicarage will be built on. I have made some enquiries and had confirmation that the land belongs to the Representative Body of the Church in Wales and is currently subject to a tenancy and they are not looking to s ell it for developpment. I have had an official response from them that says “ Due to the location of the land (on the immediate outskirts of Treuddyn) development cannot be ruled out, however, I can confirm that we are not currently exploring development options for the land. All glebe land is owned by the Representative Body of the Church in Wales and is held on trust for the benefit of the Province as a whole. Therefore the funds realised through the sale of any glebe land are much in demand. Thus an y land with future development potential will not be sold off until this potential can be realised. We, as a charity, must achieve best value in the sale of any assets. ”

28 WEATHER WISE - MARCH 2012

This has been a dry mostly beautiful month even though the rainfall has been double that of March 20 11 reducing the annual deficit to 41.25mm. Although the sunny weather of late February carried through, it did snow briefly on the morning of 4 th giving a thin wet cover which disappeared quickly. There were 15 sunny days many of which started with a frost and so the running total of frost appearance is 69 compared with 103 last year. Met. Office sources suggest that this has been the warmest March for 50 years. A high pressure system on the 8 th brought dull overcast days some with fog, which moved away fro m the 16 th . Sunny days soon followed, these conditions reinforced by the jet stream buckling north allowing another high system to cover. However, the last two days turned breezy and cold with the threat of winter to return but the traditional gales have b een absent. The return of sun spots erupting from the sun seem to be correlated with the recent relatively mild winter compared with the previous two cold winters when the sun was quiet.

29 WEATHER WISE - APRIL 2012

It was grand, it was warm, dry and very pleasant but April 2011 didn’t last and the table shows such a contrast to recent conditions! The tail of this March abruptly turned wet and cold, weather which has continued through into May. Winter duly returned on April 4 th and the long time unused snow shovel came into a ction to remove 2.5 inches. A mix of rain, fog, frost, brief sunshine and cold winds followed with more sleet and snow on the 29 th with flood warnings. A hurricane hit Newport on the 23 rd . The total frost is now 80 days compared with 106 in 2011 and the pr ecipitation was 14 times greater thus reversing a 41.25mm March deficit to an excess of 41.5mm. Not a good month.

When planting flowers and baskets or sowing seeds, think about planting to help nature.

Pollinators are responsible for assisti ng over 80% of the world's flowering plants. Without them, humans and wildlife wouldn't have much to eat or look at! Animals that assist plants in their reproduction as pollinators include species of ants, bats, bees, beetles, birds, butterflies, flies, mo ths, wasps, as well as other unusual animals. Wind and water also play a role in the pollination of many plants.

The Simple Truth: We Can’t Live Without Them!

Wildflowers support entire ecosystems for pollinators, birds, and small animals on a micro scal e. Butterflies and other insects, small birds, and animals depend on seeds, nectar, and pollen for their food supply and life support system. In addition, some pollinators are not very mobile or have very small home ranges or depend on just one species of plant and die once their habitat has been destroyed.

Over the last 50 years declines have been noted in many groups of British insects, including those that visit flowers. These include some common butterflies, moths, hoverflies and bees.

The reasons fo r this are various and complex but part of the problem may be the reduction in abundance of wild flowers in the countryside that has occurred over this 50 year period. Gardens are increasingly recognised as important habitats where insects can find sources of nectar and pollen.

Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred from one flower to another, allowing flowers to become fertilised and able to produce seeds and fruits. In some plants, such as grasses and conifers, pollen is spread by the w ind, but the majority of plants require insects and sometimes other animals to carry the pollen.

Apples, plums, pears, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, red currants, gooseberries and strawberries all rely on insects to bring about pollin ation. The same is true for some vegetables, such as broad bean, runner bean and plants in the marrow -pumpkin family.

31 It has been estimated that the value of insect -pollinated fruits and vegetables grown in the UK is about £220 million a year. In addition there is the inestimable value of pollination provided to wild flowers and garden ornamentals, making insect pollinators a vital component of our biodiversity.

Flowers attract insects by providing them with two rich sources of food - nectar and pollen. Nec tar contains sugars and provides insects with an energy source, while pollen grains contain proteins and oils.

How to attract and support pollinating insects

Avoid plants with double or multi -petaled flowers. Such flowers may lack nectar and pollen, or ins ects may have difficulty in gaining access. Never use pesticides on plants when they are in flower. Research what plants are better pollinators, eg: plant pansies rather than begonias as bedding and in baskets. Watch which flowers the insects love and plan t more of them. Use local native plants. Research suggests native plants are four times more attractive to native bees than exotic flowers. They are also usually well adapted to your growing conditions and can thrive with minimum attention. In gardens, hei rloom varieties of herbs and perennials can also provide good foraging. Chose several colours of flowers. Bees have good colour vision to help them find flowers and the nectar and pollen they offer. Flower colours that particularly attract bees are blue, p urple, violet, white, and yellow. Plant flowers in clumps. Flowers clustered into clumps of one species will attract more pollinators than individual plants scattered through the habitat patch. Where space allows, make the clumps four feet or more in diame ter. Include flowers of different shapes. Consequently, providing a range of flower shapes means more insects can benefit. Have a diversity of plants flowering all season. Most bee species are generalists, feeding on a range of plants through their life cy cle. By having several plant species flowering at once, and a sequence of plants flowering through spring, summer, and fall, you can support a range of bee species that fly at different times of the season. Plant where bees will visit. Bees favour sunny sp ots over shade and need some shelter from strong winds. Some facts : Love them or hate them – dandelions provide a great food source in our grass verges. Pansies are better than begonias if planting bedding

32 TREUDDYN UNDER 5’S

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce Treuddyn under 5’s, a well established playgroup based in the Youth Hall on the same site as the Ysgol Parc Y Llan/Ysgol Terrig. We welcome children from Treuddyn and surrounding areas, including those attending other schools.

Sessions are run during school terms on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:45 to 3:15pm at a cost of £5 per session. The Playgroup is for children aged 2 ½+, with early entitlement funded places being available.

A Playgroup Plus session is al so held on the same days, between 11:45am and 12:45pm. Playgroup Plus is available for all children registered at the Playgroup at an additional cost of £3 per session. As part of the Playgroup Plus, the playgroup supervisor will collect the children from school nurseries in Treuddyn. A packed lunch should be provided with your child, unless your child has their lunch provided by the Ysgol Parc Y LLan/Ysgol Terrig school canteen.

The Playgroup sessions provide activities that encourage the development of c hildren's social , physical , language , creative and emotional skills. Our main language is English, but incidental Welsh is introduced and encouraged during sessions.

The Playgroup is a member of Wales PPA and registered with CSSIW and Estyn, as well as ha ving Quality Assured 33 Accreditation. The last CSSIW and Estyn assessment of the Playgroup was very supportive of the work being done in the group and the standards being maintained.

All staff are very friendly caring individuals, with a shared wealth experi ence and commitment that has made the Playgroup a success.

As the Playgroup is a registered charity, we carry out fundraising events throughout the year in order to ensure we have sufficient funds maintain the group.

The Playgroup is formally governed by a committee, comprising a Chairperson , Secretary, Treasurer , and ordinary members. Parents and members of the community are encouraged to volunteer to join the committee .

If you would like any further information, would like to arrange a visit to see th e Playgroup in action or to book your child a place at this group whilst places are available, please do not hesitate to get in contact during playgroup session times on 01352 -771232.

To celebrate the formation of the fi rst Adran, or Group, to be created within the Urdd here in Treuddyn in 1922, an exhibition was held at the village hall on May 4th and 5th. The drive to launch that very first Adran was the brainchild of a sixteen year old Treuddyn girl - Marian Williams o f Llan Farm, and by today there are scores of such groups meeting regularly in towns, villages and schools across Wales. This wasn't the first time for an exhibition to be arranged to remember this important part of Welsh history; memorabilia of the life and work of the founder and her friends, have been gathered and shown in Treuddyn many times, including the celebrations of 1992 and 1997, which were arranged by a committee under the chairmanship of Mrs Eirlys Roberts, Cysgod y Dderwen. This current exhi bition was arranged by Mrs Ceinwen Parry, Mrs Carolyn Thomas, Miss Tracy Lomas, Mrs Sandra Moore, Mr Gwyn Griffith and Mrs Mary Roberts. The children of ysgol Terrig and Ysgol Parc y Llan came to visit, accompanied by their teachers. Thanks to the help of their headteachers Nia Connah and Michae l O'Grady, we can be sure that the stories will be passed on to the next generation of Treuddyn youngsters. The many visitors who came to the exhibition on the second day also showed their appreciation by writing in the book of memories. Hopefully, with help from Cadwyn Clwyd, we can also look forward to having all these recollections gathered on to a dvd and into a book of photographs. 47 Gardening News June 2012

Our poor plants are completely confused. Firstly, they had a very early spring when they all burst into growth. The daffodils and other spring bulbs put on a fantastic show with all the early shrubs joining in. Then the nasty shock came and the too many gardeners fell for the rise in temperature and ignored the date. Out went the bedding and tender plants. All looked fine until the rain arrived. I am a great believer in saying “cast n ot a clout until the May is out”. The may is not the month but the Hawthorn. It is better to be safe than sorry. After all it may have cost you money. They keep talking about global warning but that refers to the whole world not each individual spot on the world.

As I write the growth rate has slowed down, my young tomato plants sit and look at me, lots of trays of seedlings are geminated but do not grow and more and other trays are not germinating because it was too warm and now need a period of cold. Why do we try so hard to beat nature because in the end she will win.

I have cut down on the onion and potatoes only using one of the deep beds. I have four lots of potatoes in sacks as well. Only one of my purple sprouting plants produced the shoots, a ll the rest are growing beautifully but not sprouting. So far the wood pigeons that have only recently arrived in the garden, have not discovered that I grow brassicas. I have replaced one of my redcurrants with two new varieties and also a white one. S ince the start of May the weeds have galloped over the ground but my lawn is very slow to follow suit. At least it cuts down on the mowing.

Resist the urge to cut down the daffodils until they turn yellow. In fact the daffodil Pheasant’s Eye is only jus t coming into flower. You may have noticed their display on the Nercwys Road in recent weeks. You can at last clear away the last of last Summer’s growth. Hopefully the new gowth is now visible. Sadly not everything made it through last Winter. It is a puzzle why some plants and shrubs did not. After all it was not a bad one but even so I keep being told of ones that have died. I now have a problem in my leylandii hedge. It is dying of a fungal disease Ph ytopht hora. There is no cure and the spores las t in the ground for more than two years. What I do not know is whether it is a non -specific type or not. I now need to burn the infected parts to try to prevent spread to other conifers.

Firstly thanks to everyone who exhibited, visited and helped to make our craft exhibition such a success. Especial thanks to Joan and Peter Allen for their help with the boards and staging.

April meeting; we met on April 5th at Hafan Deg 7p.m.a s usual. Our guests were "Wordyg irlies", a very talented duo of ladies from Coedpoeth. They entertained us with poems and monologues they had written themselves, including one they had composed especially for our members about events that had occurred recently. How they write all tha t material and remember and perform it is beyond us! Especially as every show is different!

The other highlight was the letter we had received from Buckingham Palace in reply to our message of congratulations to her Majesty the Queen on her Diamond Jub ilee. We were very moved that it was a precise reply and not just a stereotypical letter.

On April the 17th we had an extra meeting and what a treat it was! Gaynor Bennion (Joseph) came to talk to us about "Beauty". We talked about Beauty in general a nd then Gaynor gave us all individual advice about make up and skin care. Gaynor works for Elizabeth Arden in Chester and kindly Gave up her spare time to visit us.

The May meeting was held on May the 10th.A W.I. Advisor came to discuss this years W.I . Resolution. It is basically whether to urge the Government to employ more midwives. We had an informative and wide ranging discussion with both sides of the question being discussed. The second half of the evening was a demonstration by Sandra Moore o f making small sugar paste flowers suitable for both larger cakes and cupcakes.

49 Our next meeting is on Thursday 7th June at Hafan Deg, 7 p.m. The speaker will be Cher Mather a local lady and member who will talk to us about "Saris" it shou ld be an interesting and colourful evening and as usual you are all welcome to join us. Treuddyn Knit & Natter

We are still going strong but would like our poorly members to know we are thinking of them and look forward to seeing them bac k with us very soon.

We are currently knitting for tw o charities. One is "Teddies to Treasure" for children who have never had a toy. The other is for "Fish and Chip babies", so called because they are brought home from hospital wrapped in paper as there are n o clothes available for them. We would be very grateful for any donations of wool however small the quantities (Double knitting and in bright not pastel colours please) th at anyone can spare.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 23rd May 7p.m.at Hafan Deg. PLEASE NOTE : NO MEETINGS IN JUNE AND JULY. First m eeting after the break will be Wednesday 11th August 7 p.m. at Hafan Deg.

CONTACTS: Ann Knowles 771005. Sandra Moore 770113.

50 Notices, Announcements & greetings

Congratulations to Rachel Ingman On passing your nursing degree and obt aining a job in the cardiac unit at Wrexham ’s hosp ital. from a very proud Mum, dad and Sarah

As you are aware by now I have made the decision to stand down as the Weight Watchers leader for Treuddyn.

I would like to thank both previous and current members for their support over the last 18 months. A special thanks goes out to my invaluable helpers Karen, Lisa, Lin da & Bethan who have made my role much easier. As the meeting is a success it will continue under the guidance of another leader.

We recently had a Weight Watchers walk in a torrential downpour and we are making a donation from the walk to The Treuddyn Ne ws and the remainder is being donated to the local MS support unit.

I know I will see my members as we are going to continue the walks during the summer months ahead.

Best wishes Chris 51 Elsie and Wilf Stevens have been in contact with friends and family letting everyone know how they are settling in their new home . Elsie has been playing indoor bowls and they have been taking part in local events there We are delighted that Elsie has agreed to open the Church Summer Fair on Saturday 7 th July.

`The Harmonettes’ visited Hafan Deg and gave a wonderful, fun performance singing songs from the 50’s. Many thanks to Cynthia Harris and Dawn Kent from FCC Housing for organising the show . Opposite is a photo of Patrick who was a good sport when he was Wilf pictured right with choir cajoled into taking part.

53 I have a little Satnav It sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver's friend It tells you where you are

I have a little Satnav I've had it all my life It does more than the normal one My Satnav is my wife

It gives me full instructions On exactly how to drive "It's thirty miles an hour" it says "And you're doing thirty five"

It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever Safe to overtake

It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene

It lists the vehicles just in front It lists those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear

I'm sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice

It fills me up with counselling Each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it And get a quieter sort?
