Church & Chapels, schools and other organisations have planned exciting and memorable events leading up to Christmas – too many to be mentioned in the “Church Calendar” bit of this month’s “News”. But please make every effort to come along and support the events going on in our communities, at Treuddyn, Nercwys and elsewhere. “Special” events at Treuddyn Church include our Christingle, (carols and oranges and candles, based on Christ as the Light of the World); our Crib Service, and of course our Christmas Morning service. Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, when we can remember God’s gift of our Lord & Saviour coming amongst us. It is the GOOD NEWS in a world that needs it! With every blessing for Christmas and the New Year,

8 Waste Collection Service

If you’ve had problems with the roll out of the new waste collections service and still have trouble getting through on the 01352 703350 number, please phone or email me and I will e mail the officer and driver who have been appointed to help with trouble shooting in our area. Flintshire County Council Waste service had 5,000 calls in the first week and it was difficult to get through so many residents were contacting me and I was ema iling the problems direct to the relevant people. Also let me know, if you need assisted collection from your property and I can arrange for the bins to have yellow stickers . A man called Keith has been helping with this, visiting some of the residents w ho are struggling with the new service .

The white , hessian sacks that are used for tin and plastic have been available on request over the last 18 months and still are available, by request only, they were not rolled out to ever yone with the new bins. Blue bags are also available for paper and card. If you do not have a blue box, that can also be requested, if you use your own container that should be fine. Some properties in Treuddyn such as Ffordd y Felin have never had brown bins for garden waste so some have ordered those for the new rounds. I believe t he brown bins are cu rrently out of stock but should be available soon.

After the initial pilot areas, the council rolled out the new collection service to 42,000 properties which was a huge task. Rounds were changed and new rounds have been added a nd learned by the operatives this has caused problems with the crew having to get used to the rounds while dealing with the new service. Sometimes information has not been passed on about assisted collec tions. The lorries also have to be emptied more frequently because of the increased amou nt of recycling being collected, something else the operatives have had to get used to.

The recycling has had to be introduced because of statutory targets set by the Welsh Government to reduce waste going to landfill. The county must reach a

9 recycling target of 52% by March 2012. For every tonne going to landfill there is a cost of £400 that’s £200 in taxes, plus £200 penalty.

Any extra rubbish that won’t fit in th e black wheelie bin will not be collected. The crew will put left over black bags and rubbish into the bins to be collected next time and a sticker will be left on the bin explaining to the householder what is happening. They are doing this to encourage p eople to recycle. The only things that are supposed to go in the black bin are nappies, hard plastics such as yogurt pots and fruit punnets (best advice is just recycle any bottle shaped plastic without the lids on) , cigarette ends and dust from vacuums. Over Christmas, from the middle of December to the middle of January, the black bin collections will change to weekly collections. Recycling centres will also be open every day except Christmas day.

The Welsh Government gave the authority a grant of £3.3 8m to help with the transition to the recycling scheme.

Regarding the old black bins, you can keep these for your own use, return them to any recycling site, our nearest ones are Nercwys and Hope or ask for them to be collected by phoning the department ( 703350).

If you have any queries, the number for waste collection and recy cling is currently 01352 703350, if you have trouble getting through contact me, Carolyn Thomas on 01352 770946 or email [email protected]

10 11 12 Stree t l ighting

Scottish Power contractors `Freedom’ have been carrying out some upgrading work to the street lights in Treuddyn. Unfortunately, this caused a problem to a cul -de -sac along Maes Glyndwr where the l ights were out for a few days. The upgrading work needs to be done to bring the street lights up to standard and the community council are working with Flintshire County Council Street lighting (who took over as contractors from NWP) to do this work while it is being offered at a subsidised rate. I t will also reduce the annual street lighting bill as the lamps will be more efficient.

Fees & Charges

The Council is currently looking at possibly increasing fees and charges and the introduction of some new ones, eg: transport to places of further educ ation for students 16+ and applying a strict charging policy for those students under 16 who have had concessions and would normally have to pay £55 per term. They’re also looking at increasing this to £75 per term. Because nothing has been set and it’s j ust preliminary discussion the report was marked confidential but it was leaked to the press so it’s no longer confidential. I have made strong representation against this and also about increasing the cost of school dinners. Other topics up for discussi on were the introduction of car parking charges to make it consistent across Flintshire.

Winter Fuel Payments Hotline – 0845 915 1515

Payments should arrive before Christmas with letters arriving at the end of November/beginning of December. There is no bonus this year so payments will be £200 or £300 if over 80 years of age per household. Extra will automatically be paid by another department if the temperatures go below freezing for a certain period of time.

26 ♪ Auld Lang Syne ♫

Words adapted from a tradi ti onal song by Rabbie Burns (1759 – 96)

“Should auld acquaintances get forgotten and (how on earth does it go?) we’ll drink a cup of something or other…..”

It gets belted out in millions of homes, pubs, clubs and restauran ts at midnight on New Year’s Eve but hardly anyone knows the correct words.

The first line will probably come out right because around one in five can get that far. But after that it’s downhill al l the way wi’ Robert Burns’ Scottish phrases.

The end result is a mixture of the right words, mumbling and people making up their own version as they go along.

Many sing “for the sake of auld lang syne” – a line which doesn’t exist at all in the song – o r put in “for auld lang syne, my friend” instead of “my dear”.

The title literally means “Old long since”, but is taken to represent the phrase “days long past” or “times gone by”.

Burns sent the words to the British Museum around 1788 and suggested a tu ne. The words survived but his tune did not. Luckily, for midnight singers a different tune became there version used today.

“Save some mistletoe berries in a matchbox until March, when they will be fully ripe, then cut a shallow groove in the underside of a branch of fair -sized apple tree, squash a couple of berries into it and smear them very lightly over with a muddy finger to help hold them in place. Do this several times, using different branch es on more than one tree, since not all your berries will take. If they do, you should start to see signs of life 12 to 18 months later, but it’s very slow growing – a decent bunch of mistletoe takes about seven years. It’s also a bit hit and miss; it wo rks best if you use berries from British -grown mistletoe – and ideally taken from a bunch that itself grew on apple. ”

Mistletoe plants grow on a wide range of host trees, and commonly reduce their growth but can kill them with heavy infestation. All mist letoes are hemi -parasites, using the host mainly for water and mineral nutrients. However, the mistletoe first sprouts from bird feces on the trunk of the tree and in its early stages of life it takes nutrients from this source

Most mistletoe seeds are s pread by birds, such as the Mistle Thrush in Europe. The seeds are excreted in their droppings and stick to twigs, or more commonly the bird grips the fruit in its bill, squeezes the sticky coated seed out to the side, and then wipes its bill clean on a su itable branch

Ecological importance

Mistletoe was often considered a pest that kills trees and devalues natural habitats, but was recently recognized as an ecological keystone species, an organism that has a disproportionately pervasive influence over its community. A broad array of

29 animals depend on mistletoe for food, consuming the leaves and young shoots, transferring pollen between plants, and dispersing the sticky seeds.

A study of mistletoe in junipers concluded that more juniper berries sprout i n stands where mistletoe is present, as the mistletoe attracts berry -eating birds which also eat juniper berries Such interactions lead to dramatic influences on diversity, as areas with greater mistletoe densities support higher diversities of animals. T hus, rather than being a pest, mistletoe can have a positive effect on biodiversity, providing high quality food and habitat for a broad range of animals in forests and woodlands worldwide.

Right: Mistletoe According to postcard, circa Pliny the 1900 Elder , the Celts considered mistletoe a remedy for barrenness in animals and an antidote to poison

Mistletoe is commonly used as a Christmas decoration, thou gh such use was rarely alluded to until the 18th century . According to ancient Christmas custom, a man and a woman who meet under a hanging of mistletoe were obliged to kiss. The custom may be of Scandinavian origin .

"The mistletoe is still hung up in far m-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, plucking each time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked the privilege ceases."

31 Coed Talon was often known as `The Black’ or `Black Diamond’ because of its mining history. A Pontybodkin resident showed me her birth certificate and she was registered as being born in `The Black’

I was recently told the following ditty which is very true! - Often I’ve been caught out thinking it’s a warm day in Pontybodkin and then gone to Treuddyn and wished I’d put a jacket on! Also, you can often see the rain turn to snow as you get to by the chimney at the old wo rks in Coed Talon.

“When it’s raining in It’s snowing in The Black & When you go up to Treuddyn It’s enough to blow you back! ”

32 Twas the Night before Christmas Poem

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creatur e was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar -plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerc hief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new -fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid -day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a m oment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house -top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nichola s too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

33 He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes -how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His drol l little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went str aight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thi stle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good -night!"
