An Easter Message from the Vicarage.....

Churches and Chapels everywhere are once again celebrating the lead-up to Easter, remembering the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The message is one of joy and hope, and hopefully it coincides with love, joy, and hope in our everyday lives. Let’s push away the gloom and despondency of the media around us, and celebrate Jesus and his eternal care for each one of us. Alleluia, He is Risen! Be joyful in the Lord! Please try to join us in Church and Chapel, before, during and after this Holy Season of Easter, as we worship God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

A happy and blessed Easter to all, from John the Vicar and all at the Vicarage.

---000---

On behalf of the Minister, the Elders and members of Capel y Rhos I would like to take this opportunity to send our very best wishes to Mr Wilfred and Mrs Elsie Stephens who are about to make a new home in Llanfairfechan in order to be closer to their daughter Janet and her family.

All who know them are aware of the tremendous contribution made by Mr and Mrs Stephens to all that is good in our community.

11 Both have been leading members of innumerable societies and committees and are held in high regard by all.

I am sure that some will remember the day of their wedding, almost sixty four years ago, when a tremendous thunderstorm struck, with the result that the cream on the trifle went sour! The same, however, cannot be said of their marriage which has remained a strong and loving one over the decades and remains an example to us all. They have been wonderful friends and neighbours to many and have contributed abundantly to every good cause, working unstintingly for the benefit of so many of them.

We thank them for their devotion to Capel y Rhos over the years and wish them every happiness in their new home, whilst treasuring our many memories of them.

Pob Bendith.

Mary Roberts.

12 There have been issues at the play area with a minority of children behaving in an antisocial manner which then spoils it for everyone. The play equipment was installed for everyone to use and it’s not fair to deprive anyone from using the equipment by not behaving in a good manner or respecting other people.

Rather than just having a play scheme this year, the community council are in discussion with the play unit regarding possibly using resources to visit the schools and talk about `play’ and `respect’. They may also visit the play area prior to the Summer holidays and teach new games and skills to the children which we are hoping will be a fun experience for all. More information in the next newsletter.

The Community Council have also had a lot of wonderful comments from parents and grandparents who are taking children to the park for the first time since it’s renovation saying what a great facility it is for our community. It’s great to see all the children and adults enjoying being out in the recent fabulous weather.

13 Treuddyn Community Council have had some new notice boards installed in Ffordd y Rhos, Treuddyn and Black Mountain at the request of residents. After having a few issues with some installed over the recent years by grant funders, the Community Council commissioned a local Treuddyn joiner, Graham Hall to produce these two, taking on board the best elements of other examples; and the residents and community council are thrilled with the results.

14 Streetscene is about giving one easy point of contact for all services associated with your streets, highways and open spaces. There are many different services which combine to form Streetscene such as waste collection, highway maintenance, grounds and street cleansing to name only a few. The aim of the service is to work closely with the Local community in delivering a clean and well kept environment of which everyone can be proud.

You can report anything that affects the street scene like litter, dog fouling, recycling, faulty streetlights or even problems with the road or pavement using the 01352 701234 number.

Flintshire has been divided into twelve areas and each has an Area Coordinator who will liaise with the local Community, Community Council and County Councillor. It’s about creating pride in their patch and the Coordinator will be able to call upon a team who will eventually have more generic and flexible positions tackling a variety of highways issues.

Treuddyn comes under Area 7 which also includes , Leeswood and Llanfynydd wards. The newly appointed area Coordinator is Dave Bell who previously worked in Highways, grass cutting.

Dave has already helped with issues such as fly tipping, littering and dog fouling. The area Coordinator will also feed in other issues raised such as getting Ffordd Nercwys resurfaced (the potholes have been repaired about three times!) and getting the road markings redone.

15 Road markings that have been reported under `Streetscene’ as needing renewing along the A5104, Corwen Road. The previous harsh winters of sub zero temperatures and gritting the roads have caused a lot of damage.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO This bag of rubbish DROP LITTER OR was collected walking NOT TO CLEAN UP along the Corwen AFTER YOU DOG Road from Corner Garage to Coed Talon, there was so much the bag burst. Littering and fly tipping costs FCC a significant amount of money which could be better used elsewhere.

Dog fouling is a huge problem in Treuddyn at the moment.. FCC Environmental Protection has been sending officers to patrol the area. They have also asked for any intelligence supplying days, times, descriptions, etc of those who they know/allege are committing these offences. They will then be able to deploy officers on the basis of this information. The dedicated dog fouling enforcement team can be contacted on: 01352 703 366 or email [email protected]. They are also working with the Area Co- ordinator and Community Council on dealing with the matter.

16 Last term Ysgol Terrig had a visit from the `Dog Trust’ regarding responsible dog ownership and they will be visiting Ysgol Parc y Llan this term. This has been arranged through Flintshire County Council’s dog fouling enforcement team. It is hoped that someone from `Streetscene’ will also be able to visit the schools regarding education on littering.

Dropping litter, or not picking up after your dog can incur an on the spot fine of £75 or up to £1000 if taken to court. Thirteen tickets have been issued in Flintshire, eight for dog fouling and five for littering. Two successful prosecutions have taken place where the fixed penalty notices had not been paid.

The moving benches.

A few residents have approached the community council regarding the bench missing from the Farmers Arms bus stop. One lady used it as a rest stop to enable her to walk back from the Corner Garage back home, another needed it to enable her to wait for the bus as her legs didn’t have the stamina to stand and wait.

The bench had been carried to the bus shelter higher up in Ffordd y Llan opposite the turning for Queen Street, you may have seen it inside there.

There was initially a similar bench to the side of the bus shelter but it got worn out and damaged, and in the end, had to be removed.

Following this, some young people carried a picnic bench believed to be from the Farmers Arms pub garden to inside the bus shelter. Although, after doing this they must have realised it meant they could not fit inside so smashed it up in pieces and flung it on the tin roof and on the land behind. This left them without a bench until they carried the one up from the Farmer’s Arms bus stop. It must have taken some effort as these benches have concrete arms.

The community council are currently looking at reinstating the bench in its original position. 17 Flintshire Burglary Unit

The Unit is headed up by Detective Sergeant William Jones of Mold CID, and should you have any information in relation to burglaries you can contact him direct (anonymously if you wish) on 01978-34- 8614, or North Police on 0845-607-1002, or Crime Stoppers on 0800-555-111.

Garages and sheds - Fit sheds and garages with strong padlocks and ideally an alarm. Always lock ladders in the garage or shed to stop a thief using them.

Postcode your property - It can deter burglars because it is harder for a thief to sell on marked property and may also help police secure a conviction.

Thefts from Garden Sheds

There have been some recent thefts from garden sheds in Treuddyn where bikes and fishing rods were taken. Push bikes and other items are also being stolen for their metal value. If you see anything suspicious call 999 in an emergency, 101 non emergency or crime stoppers on 0880 555 111.

The gang that were around stealing cars in the area may soon be active again. There were several arrested at the time but four of the team are possibly still operating and the others may soon be released. They try door handles and then steal car keys, it’s unlikely the doors will be forced so please make sure that you look your doors and keep car keys out of view.

18 Bus Transport Following concerns from residents, the following information has been received from FCC Head of Transport.:

GHA have increased the bus fare from Treuddyn to Mold by 30p from 6th March, 2012 to offest the 20% reduction in fuel duty rebate (BSOG) imposed on bus operators. The issue facing bus operators going forward will be to either increase fares to compensate for funding cuts or reduce or discontinue existing services on commercial routes. It is inevitable that they will look at which bus routes are generating the least income and are not commercially viable.

The bus services to Mold and Chester from Treuddyn are subsidised by the Council and Flintshire CC have made provision within their budget to secure the same level of bus services for 2012/13 whilst carrying out a review of all the bus services. The Welsh Government have recently informed the Council that they we will lose £150k (27%) of the Local Transport Services Grant in 2012/13 and they are considering the impacts of these cuts on all Local Authorities following the Councils concerns over the short notice given to implement the cut.

There are also significant potential cuts in funding to Community Transport operators of over £100k which the Welsh Government are considering on an individual operator/area basis. The Council are required to provide 10% of our LTSG allocation towards Community Transport.

Regarding the D42 and the new shuttle bus service soon to be introduced, these bus services are an integral part of the re-tendering of Demand Responsive Transport Services provided by the Council. The D42 may soon have the Saturday service axed and the Sunday service limited.

19 Cadwyn – RDP grant funded shuttle bus.

This is the timetable for the new grant funded bus service which will run for twelve months on a trial basis to see if there is a need.

It will provide an early morning and evening service.

The basis of the grant is to help residents in rural areas access employment and transport hubs.

20 Hafan Deg

The dryer in the laundry room was repaired just before Christmas and again in January. It recently broke down again and it has been agreed that it would now be more viable to replace the machine than keep getting it repaired.

Advice is also being given to not overload the machines as this can cause problems and will also slow drying time.

Another outside clothes dryer has been ordered.

Flintshire County Council Housing Ballot

The tenants of Flintshire have decided to opt to stay with the Council, with 88% of tenants voting in the ballot voting no to a transfer from the Council, and 12% of tenants voting yes.

This is the highest turnout in a housing ballot in Wales with 71% of tenants using their vote.

The County Council will be recommended to accept the outcome of the ballot at its coming meeting on 27 March.

The Council could see this outcome as a resounding vote of trust and confidence in it as a landlord providing good quality housing and support services for local people. Our performance has improved significantly in recent years and this is clearly recognised by our tenants as our customers.

We will now discuss with Welsh Government how we can bridge the funding gap and achieve its policy of the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.

21 Waste Collection / Recycling

Streetscene will now cover recycling and collection of Waste. (01352 701234)

The crew carries a limited number of Hessian and blue bags for paper, plastic and cans if you require them. Don’t forget to take the lids off plastic bottles.

---000---

A meeting took place in Treuddyn village hall between Dwr Cymru Welsh Water Planners, FCC representative, Environment Agency Wales representative and residents concerned about issues with sewage treatment facilities. DCWW said that they had carried out an up to date feasibility study which concluded that there is now capacity for 60 houses at the treatment facility. Their technical adviser did not attend the meeting so could not explain why there was a change in stance.

Since that meeting the FCC’s legal department have asked for a copy of the feasibility study so that FCC’s drainage officers can understand why there is suddenly capacity. I am still waiting for further advice but from what I can gather so far it is because DCWW will employ more manual intervention to keep the system running more efficiently, for example if the machinery and pumps were cleared more often by a manual operator it would be more efficient. I am not satisfied that this is acceptable when in this day and age we are looking more at automated services and further questions are being asked.

Another question raised was if there is capacity for 60 houses and the new development is now for 41 and others that need to connect are able, this would take the number to 62 which would be over capacity. Also, what about future growth? The reply at the meeting was that the study was for 60 houses as the application for the new development was originally for 60 houses, it may be able to take more; we are still waiting for the answer.

22 We were told that AECOM were drawing up plans for the clusters of houses that had issues with sceptic tank systems and wanted to connect. These plans would then be submitted to DCWW for possible grant funding under section 101a. We asked for Cae Mynach to also be included because the residents have been told that the properties could not connect to the main treatment facility when the houses were built because it was up to capacity. and we believe DCWW need to take some responsibility and help the residents.

I was told last year at the FCC, DCWW & EAW planning meeting that the commuted sum agreed in the contract would now not cover 50% of the costs, realistically they thought it would be about £650k but Welsh Water would stand by the agreement and cover the extra costs. Before Christmas I was told that to improve the works, it would actually need an investment of about £900k or a £1m. I was then told it was good news because the financial investment was no longer needed but I am still not satisfied that it isn't. I am aware that the Welsh Government has provided £1.4 billion for investment as they are aware significant investment is required in many areas. DCWW can then claim back the money in water rates and repay the funds that way.

DCWW say on the end of emails: "Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is investing heavily and working hard to ensure top quality services to all its communities. The company is investing £1.3 billion in its water and sewerage network between 2010 – 2015".

The money is available if investment is required and I and others are still not satisfied that investment is no longer needed to bring the treatment works up to current standards.

FCC Cemeteries department is currently getting quotes for the work to the cemetery extension. Drainage needs putting in and then it will require landscaping ready for grass cutting in line with the current cemetery standard. The developers will be planting a hedge between the cemetery and the development.

23 `Bro Brwynog’ Pennaf and Lovells housing development in Treuddyn

Once the `go-ahead’ was given by DCWW that the treatment facility had adequate capacity, the work on the development started.

The groundwork, drainage and highways is being done by a local firm `Cottles’. They put the main estate road in place first to get the vehicles off the main road. They are putting a huge amount of drainage into the site and I’ve been advised that this should hopefully help alleviate existing drainage problems from neighbouring properties.

There has been a lot of interest in the houses by local residents and I understand that the homes built for rent and available under the `affordable housing register’ should all be going to local people.

Plans and updates are posted on the Treuddyn website www.treuddyn.org.uk and the developers will be attending the Treuddyn festival on 14th July 2012. 24 Planting of Woodland

Sandra Martin, a Treuddyn resident has been planting a woodland of 2750 native broadleaf trees on approx half of her fields with the help of volunteers. It is part of a Welsh Government Glastir scheme to convert agricultural land to woodland. This was grant funded through a carbon planting scheme but Sandra gave more consideration and wanted to have a programme of planting broadleaf, native species that had a bias towards Biodiversity and Amenity. These included Ash, Cherry, Birch, Oak, Alder, Aspen, Hazel, Hawthorn, Crab Apple, Holly, Guelder rose and willow.

The woodland will probably take approximately 10-15 years to reach thicket stage and 20-25 years for canopy closure to occur and Sandra has a management plan is in place for the next 10 years so trees will be coppiced (thinned out) leaving the best and strongest ones as Standards. The vegetation and shrub will then provide fantastic habitat to entice birds, insects and other wildlife back to the area. All the varieties are native broadleaf and shrub and will attract plant and wildlife species back to the area and also reduce carbon footprint.

The woodland will be called Blossom wood after the little girl featured in the photo left, (she is the granddaughter of Sandra's partner) and can be seen from Church Walk.

25 Post Office, Village Shops & Garage - Update

The latest news is that the village shop will be reopened and the new owners are hoping to also run the post office service from there.

26 SAFETY AT HOME

Every year firefighters in Wales attend over 2,000 accidental fires in the home.

Andy Robb, Partnership Manager with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said “Of those 2,000 fires at least 1,000 of them start in the kitchen. Most people are lucky enough to get out alive, but hundreds suffer injuries and too many are still lost to home fires.

Most people, if they think, can change something about their daily routines at home to reduce the chances of having an accidental fire.”

Follow North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s 12 top tips for fire safety at home:

1. Fit smoke alarms on each level in your home. Test them once a week. Keep them free from dust. NWFRS will fit these for free. 2. Make a fire action plan so that everyone in your home knows how to escape if there's a fire. 3. Keep the exits from your home clear so that people can escape if there's a fire. Make sure that everyone in your home can easily find the keys for doors and windows. 4. Take extra care in the kitchen – never leave young children alone in the kitchen. Never leave cooking unattended. 5. Take extra care when cooking with hot oil. Never use a chip pan – use a deep-fat fryer which is controlled by a thermostat. 6. Never leave lit candles in rooms that nobody is in or in rooms where children are on their own. Make sure candles are in secure holders on a surface that doesn't burn and are away from any materials that could burn. 7. Make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly and are disposed of carefully, and never smoke in bed. 27 8. Get into the habit of closing doors at night. If you want to keep a child's bedroom door open, close the doors to the lounge and kitchen. This may well help save their life if there is a fire. 9. Don't overload electrical sockets. Remember one plug for one socket. 10. Keep matches and lighters where children can't see or reach them. 11. Take special care when you're tired or when you've been drinking. 12. Don't leave the TV or other electrical appliances on standby as this could cause a fire. Always switch them off and unplug when not in use.

Keep responsible - Keep safe !

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service offers free home fire safety checks and will install smoke alarms where necessary - to request a visit contact our 24 hour hotline on freephone 0800 169 1234 or e- mail [email protected]

30 A very busy term at Ysgol Parc Y Llan

KS2 pupils learned about the dangers and harm smoking can do yourself and others when Healthy Schools Coordinator Andrew Johnson came to school with an unwanted visitor, Mr. Cig! It was a very informative morning for pupils.

As part of Guides ‘World Thinking Day’ Brownies and Guides wore their uniforms to school on February 22nd. They were helping to raise awareness of the poorest people in the world who are the ones who will most feel the effects of environmental degradation and climate change.

Ysgol Parc Y Llan celebrated St. David’s Day in style with an assembly attended by over 70 parents. Pupils recited poems, sang songs, acted out stories and Year 5 and 6 performed a modern dance, which represented the Welsh flag.

31 We celebrated World book Day on Friday 9th March where pupils dressed up as their favourite book Character, many thanks to all of the high quality of costumes provided. During the Day Sioned Jacques from the County Library Service came and read a selection of her favourite books to all classes. In the afternoon Governor Gill Short came and officially opened the new library area she was instrumental in setting up and stocking with a wide selection of English and Welsh titles.

Year 5 and 6 pupil s enjo yed a very practical and enjoyable 2 days with a Cycle Training Course held at school. Pupils learnt how to ride safely on the playground before demonstrating the skills they had learnt on the roads around Treuddyn. Mr. Dough Macpherson, North West Regional Coordinator, said ‘We very much enjoyed our time spent with you and would like to say thank you to all the pupils for their energy and enthusiasm.’

32 As part of their topic ‘Our Homes’ Class 1 and 2 pupils have been exploring Treuddyn over the last half term and discovered some very fascinating facts. On their visit to ‘St Mary’s Church’ Rev John Jones showed pupils the oldest stain glass windows in Wales. He also let them dress up in his ceremonial gowns and they showed great enjoyment in ringing the church bell! Sorry if we disturbed anyone! The pupils also discovered the Urdd plaque on Church Lane.

Ysgol Parc Y Llan were celebrating ‘yn fawr’ after a Great Urdd competition held at Bryn Coch School on Saturday 3rd March. Where Wesley Rigby, Year 3 came 1st out of 42 competitors and Dylan Drew, Year 5, won through to the Flintshire and Wrexham Competition held at Glyndwr University on Saturday 17th of March. Dylan won his competition and is now going to represent Fflint & Maelor at the national finals in June in Caernarfon. A very big thank you to all the parents and cares for their hard work and giving of their time to support pupils in learning their Welsh poems. Also a ‘diolch mawr, mawr to Miss Lewis- Jones for all her hard work and time in preparing and supporting pupils.

Every Thursday after school the hall has being echoing to ‘Hows that!’ as a joint cricket club has been run by Tony Moss for both Ysgol Parc Y Llan and Ysgol Terrig. All pupils have been bowled over by the club. They have gained many skills and had lots of runs! 33 Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils have enjoyed residential visits this term. Year 4 and 5 visited Pentrellyncymer and Year 6 pupils had a very enjoyable time at Glan Llan learning and practicing Welsh and getting to know Year 6 pupils from local schools.

37 Ysgol Terrig

We at Ysgol Terrig have been very busy this last half term. Year 5 had a very enjoyable time at Glan Llyn. They had an adventurous time!! They got stuck on the lake not once but twice and ended up being rescued by the speed boat back to camp. They were very wet when they got back to camp.but had had a lot of fun. They had fun on the ropewalking activities, got dressed up for the disco and made friends with other children from other schools. When they got back to school they told us how tired they were; but I think that was something to do with all the midnight feasts they had eaten!!! A big Congratulations to Morgan Roberts who competed in the finals of the Urdd swimming Gala in Cardiff . Morgan swam is personal best so that was a big achievement for him. Da iawn ti.

We have also been busy learning recitals for the Urdd Eisteddfod and were successful. We are now practising for the second round in Wrexham on the 17th March. Hanna Llwyd Jones will be taking part in the piano recital and the group recital will also be competing. Good Luck to everyone. Wrexham Football Club have been holding an after-school club for the children and we are all looking forward to the main event of playing during half time at Wrexham Football Club at the club’s home game.

38 This is the badge that was designed by to celebrate 70 years of the Urdd by Alan Victor Jones who at the time was Head of the Art department at Maes Garmon. We would welcome someone designing a similar badge to celebrate 90 years.

Hafan Deg Association AGM

The AGM of Hafan Deg Association will take place on Wednesday 18th April at 7pm.

Members are reminded that annual subscriptions are due on this evening. At the May meeting of the Association an illustrated talk will be given by Jenny Smith on her travels entitled "A trek on skis across Baffin Island above the Arctic Circle".

43 The Hafan Deg Association enjoyed a talk by Lady Janet Jones on her role as High Sheriff of Clwyd. High Sheriffs have been in place for approximately 1,000 years, some fought in the Battle of Hastings. They weren’t always popular as they were at one time debt collectors, remember Robin Hood? This role didn’t officially stop until 2003. Each Sheriff attended the King’s court.

The Office of High Sheriff is an independent non- political Royal appointment for a single year. The origins of the Office date back to Saxon times, when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the maintenance of law and order within the shire, or county, and for the collection and return of taxes due to the Crown. Today, there are 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales each year.

Whilst the duties of the role have evolved over time, supporting the Crown and the judiciary remain central elements of the role today. In addition, High Sheriffs actively lend support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and to the voluntary sector. In recent years High Sheriffs in many parts of England and Wales have been particularly active in encouraging crime reduction initiatives, especially amongst young people. Many High Sheriffs also assist Community Foundations and local charities working with vulnerable and other people both in endorsing and helping to raise the profile of their valuable work. The High Sheriff Association adopted DebtCred and Crimebeat in recent years in response to specific areas of need.

High Sheriffs receive no remuneration and no part of the expense of a High Sheriff’s year falls on the public purse.

Lady Janet is the 5th lady high Sheriiff the first modern being appointed in 1967. Royal visits are organised by the Lord Leftenant and the High Sheriff has to be present.

Lady Janet supports the charity Crimebeat and during her year of office has raised £21,000 for charity.

44 WEATHER WISE by Winston Lea

JANUARY 2012

Bad weather streamed in from the Atlantic in the first week carried by a fast moving jet stream direct from Greenland. Violent storm force 93mph winds crossed the Lleyn rocking trees on their roots as they blew through Treuddyn. Luckily by the 8th the jet stream had buckled northwards allowing a high pressure to cover the UK and a much quieter period. Frost prevailed until the 18th when the wild winds returned for four days only to give way again to sub-zero temperatures until the end of the month. This winter has seen 42 frost days compared with 71 last time.

45 FEBRUARY 2012

Whilst rainfall was almost 2.5 times less than February 2011, the four winter months were just 6mm drier than the four of last winter. The wet December made the difference. There were only 7 days with any snow (thin) on the ground (but the new snow shovel is still unused!), 36 last time, and 59 days with frost against 85.

Both the maximum and minimum temperatures are greater for this February though the average levels are less. The frost lingered on from January until the 13th, frequently staying all day but as the weather came from Russia it wasn’t always the normal intensely white due to the dry atmosphere. However, the ice cover from the freezing rain on the 9/10th was distinctly unpleasant. An Atlantic high pushed in on the 13th bringing milder weather and although frost did return, it was the 24th which brought mild overnight temperatures of the kind more usually experienced in the daytime. The month ended with a beautiful afternoon on the extra day.

46 EYES TO THE SKIES AGAIN!

Raise your eyes to the skies to see a surprise whether it is the Hurricane, Spitfire, Buzzards or Kites, all recently described, or Sun Dogs, Stack of Plates and Ice Rainbows. What? Dogs and plates flying in the sky?!! And frozen rainbows?! Well yes, but these are strange and unusual meteorological phenomena.

The Stack of Plates are a form of high altitude UFO lens shaped clouds weirdly stacked like plates which loiter in the sky for some while as did the formation in this photograph. In fact it was apparent for several hours on Boxing Day morning hanging at high altitude in the sky to the north of the village whilst the layers gradually moved and oozed one against another. Curiously the whole mass drifted very slowly west at great height over and against a very strong westerly airflow at ground level. Yes, it was windy. The Met. Office suggest that these clouds are formed when a moving layer of moist air rises up over hills or mountains and cools unevenly 47 sending waves of moist air bouncing upwards and the lenticular shapes form on the crests. Presumably this must happen very rapidly in succession for the plates then to stack one over another as shown. But since this formation seemed to be clear of significant raised land below, it must also be possible for the higher air flow to be checked by another opposing lower stream of air behaving as a landmass for the clouds to layer up in this way. It was visible for most of the morning but its rapid disappearance over lunch is apparently typical of these formations.

The Sun Dogs or Mock Suns, more technically known as a Parhelia, were visible one either side of a bright setting sun on a cold Saturday January 28th in the direction of Llandegla. They are caused when ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds refract to split sunlight from a low sun and those very high clouds were certainly present on that late afternoon. Apparently it is the orientation and shape of the ice particles that dictate whether Sun Dogs or Haloes result from this refraction, the latter appearing from randomly arranged or irregularly shaped crystals while Sun Dogs need them to be flat and horizontally layered. Here the refraction splits the light into a weakly formed vertical ‘rainbow’ in which red is very distinct and closest to the sun graduating away through orange and yellow to a white Mock Sun. It is difficult to identify the other colours. But is it unique for two to appear together and thereby suggest the presence of three suns together as occurred on that cold Saturday evening? I have yet to find out.

Unfortunately the bands of colours in my photographs do not print well enough in monochrome to be included.

We are all familiar with multicoloured rainbows on days of sunshine and showers and sometimes more than one as they rise up and then back down to a pot of gold! Well, surprisingly they can also occur upside down, and be brighter. As with Sun Dogs, they are formed by sunlight refracting through horizontal ice crystals and are thus known as Ice Rainbows. They are then seen directly above us but can only form when the sun is very, very low on the horizon.

48 Gardening News

April 2012

In the last two months our gardens have really burst into life. Unfortunately all the weeds and some of the bugs have as well. The soil is ideal for working. Only a month ago I could not get on the beds. The temptation is to plant out too soon but remember it is early and we could still have frosts. I will proceed with caution and plant out as usual.

I have lots of seeds germinating or not. I followed Carol Klein’s advice and sowed astrantia seed in the autumn. As she said it may not work but will germinate in the spring. She was right and my seed is now growing. I have tried before with no success when sown conventionally. I might try this method with other difficult seed. After all nothing ventured nothing gained.

Last year I grew too many potatoes and onions so I am going to halve them this time. It means that I have more room for other vegetables. The Christmas potatoes were a success and we are just finishing the last of them. Local shops and garden centres are now selling potatoes in small packs for the sacks.

One of my redcurrant bushes had grown out of shape and I have removed it and am putting in one new one plus a white currant. Both fruit on the old wood are easy to train. I do not know if the birds like the white ones as badly as they like the red ones.

At the start of winter my pond had clear water and now at last the frogs have returned and spawned. There is not as much as before but sufficient for the pond. Suddenly I found what looked like a large deposit of what looked like dog dirt but black in colour and 49 containing stripes of red threads and no smell. The penny dropped when I found a few days later a long strip of black dirt, typically hedgehog. I can only think that the other deposit was the first effort after hibernation. I have not seen any of them yet but the evidence is there regularly. I am feeding many wild birds of all sizes. One blackbird is in a terrible state with missing feathers and all dishevelled just like they look at the end of the breeding season. I do not know what he has been up to but he is feeding well.

All the Spring bulbs put on a great show particularly the snowdrops. I have quite a number of the special ones and they are building up into nice clumps. Some little tulips I planted last year are up to flower again. I keep telling my camellias to delay opening case of frost. Ribes laurifolium appeared to be in terminal decline last year but has surprised me by bursting into growth and is going to flower. The hellebores are just coming into flower. However, the ones I am selling, have been flowering since Christmas although most of these are the double ones.

I think I am going to stop sowing sweet peas in the autumn as I have lost the lot in the short spell of frost. They died of lack of water due to frozen compost. I am going to sow some more in the same pots. Another disaster has been some tomato seed bought from a minor grower. One packet only had three seeds in it. I am going to add some of the same variety into the seed trays.

50 Treuddyn WI report

In February the first meeting of Treuddyn WI began with President Ann Knowles wishing us all a Happy New Year and hoping members who were indisposed a speedy recovery.

Our sympathy was extended to the family of Mrs Marian Williams, who sadly passed away just before Christmas. Mrs Williams has been a loyal member for many years and will be missed by all of us.

A warm welcome was given to new member Jane Holmes.

The date of the exhibition of handicrafts made by members was confirmed as Saturday 31st March (10.00 am to 4.00 pm). This will take place in Hafan Deg and will be open to members of the public.

Our speaker for the evening was Mrs Eileen Walker a wood carver, who after a successful career in Nursing, changed direction and learnt the craft of woodcarving. The carvings she brought with her were a delight to behold and she showed us the various stages a block of wood went through before eventually becoming a beautiful duck. Mrs Walker teaches classes at Nightingale House where many pupils carve love spoons. Another piece shown was the head of a pet Labrador, carved by an 84 year old lady who only took up the craft in her 70s. As Mrs Walker said “you are never too old to learn”.

The vote of thanks was given by Trish Fitzsimmons, the competition was won by Mavis Williams and the raffle by Nancy Read.

Treuddyn WI held its St Davids day meeting at Hafan Deg on Thursday 1st March.

We had guests from Llanfynydd WI and members of the Leete group. Our speaker was Mr Gron Ellis who told us about the history of the Eisteddfod, including what a pivotal role had played in the story. Afterwards we all enjoyed the wonderful buffet provided by the members, before the raffle was drawn. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 5th April at Hafan Deg at 7pm. It is our 60th Birthday celebration and we will be entertained by"Word Girlies". Everyone is always welcome to join us at our meetings held on the first Thursday of every month at Hafan Deg at 7 p.m. 51 On Saturday 31st March we are having an Exhibition of Craft by members past and present celebrating Treuddyn WI's 60th Birthday, to be held at Hafan Deg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. admission £2 to include refreshments.

Treuddyn Knit & Natter

About 3 months ago we held our first meeting, wondering how many, if any, ladies would come along. We were pleasantly surprised when about ten ladies, burdened down with all sorts of paraphernalia in some cases, or just needles, hooks, some wool and a pattern in others, braved the elements to joinu s. Some of the ladies were very experienced and had come along more for the "natter" part I think, whilst others were complete beginners, with a few inbetweeners amongst us. We like to help beginners to learn to knit or crochet and would love more young people to come along. Knitting and crochet are very fashionable at the moment and you can make your own accessories and garments quite quickly. One lady(Pam Evans) even brought a spinning wheel along one night for us all to have a go.

Since that first meeting more people have come along and we now have about twenty regulars. Please all of you feel free to come along to any meetings, experienced or beginner, young or old, W.I. members or not, you will all be most welcome. We meet at Hafan Deg at 7 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. We all put a pound in the pot to cover refreshments. If you would like to know more, please contact either Sandra Moore, 01352 770113 or Ann Knowles 01352 771005.

Knit and Natter dates: 28th March, 11th April, 25th April, 9th May, 23rd May at Hafan Deg, 7 p.m.

54 The Exile’s Sabbath are words written about the boring life during the last war. Nothing but `work’ until one day he heard a voice from a `friend’ saying that it was Sunday. This numbed him; thoughts of home, parents walking to the chapel, the longing came over him. Here there’s just war.

He wished he could sit again in that Treuddyn Chapel and listen to the sounds of the organ and the singing about the loss of blood on Calfaria. These words were written October 24th in Sicily by Eifion, a Treuddyn man.

I found them handwritten amongst some old photos, I hope you enjoy them, Helen Roberts.

55 56 Graianrhyd and the Terrig by John Hanahoe

You can start this walk at the old Graianrhyd School or from the Treuddyn end at the layby in Ffordd yr Odyn. Points of interest include the crossing of the Terrig twice and the great views.

Map: Explorer 256 or Landranger 117 Start/Finish: Graianrhyd Map Ref: 322356 or Ffordd yr Odyn, Treuddyn 324357 (point 3 in the narrative) Distance: 3.5m/5.5km Time: 1.5 hrs

Map

1. Walk directly up the lane opposite the school called Ffordd Rhyd y Ceirw. This levels off and eventually goes down to a lovely ford and footbridge over the stream (the Terrig). Go up the other side to where the lane joins the main road and there you will see an old public footpath sign and stile.

Footbridge over the Terrig

2. Cross the stile and bear right past a pond and along the fence on the right to where the fence ends. At that point angle slightly up the field to where the corner of the next field sticks out. Go round that hedge/fence and along it to a stile. Cross the stile and then another stile. From that stile head to the right of the big pylon in front. Cross another stile and footbridge over a ditch. Keep straight on across two more stiles to a third stile by a gate leading to a farm drive. Cross into the drive and turn right and then over a stile on the left by a cottage. Cross the field to another stile, which gives access to a lane (Ffordd yr Odyn). 57 3. Turn left along Ffordd yr Odyn and follow it to a drive to a large house called Tyn y Coed. There is a footpath sign pointing down the drive. Walk down the drive to the garden of the house where you turn left over a stile into a field. Turn right and go down the field past the house. At an intersection of open field entrances go straight on keeping the hedge to your right past one gate until another gate is reached which gives access to the next field on the right. Go through that gate and angle across the field towards the farm house in the distance. You will cross two stiles either side of a footbridge crossing a ditch. Head towards the gate giving access to the farm yard and turn right having gone through that gate to a gate just beyond the house with metal girder posts. Go through that gate and alongside the house in the field to another stile giving access to woodland either side of the stream; once again the Terrig. Go down the intricate series of stile and steps to a footbridge and cross the stream into the next field. Some of Flintshire’s Stilework

4. Go directly up the steep field through gorse and eventually to a gate. Take a moment to make friends with the lovely Soay sheep as their curiosity get the better of their fear and they creep up behind you and then dart away as you turn round.

Soay Sheep

5. Go through the gate and then across a stile. Cross a small field to the left corner where there is another stile and then cross the drive to the house Bryn Coch. On the other side of the drive is another stile, which is quite high above the level of the drive. Go over that and up the steep hillside keeping the hedge to your left until a stile appears in the top left corner of the field. Cross that stile and angle up the next field keeping the boundaries either side of you at about 45 degrees aiming for a lone tree on the horizon. 58 Walk past that tree and keep the wood and fence posts on your left. The path curves slightly right to cross a stream in woods before emerging into the next field.

6. Ahead slightly to the left you will see a stone wall with a which you cross into the grounds of a house called Glyn Terrig. Go down the path to another stream, which you can cross and then turn right. Follow the stream for a short distance before the path goes up steeply to the left and over a stile into the yard of the outbuildings. Head past the buildings and up the drive with a grassy middle. Go through the gate of the property and on down the drive over a cattle grid. After approximately a quarter of a mile you reach Ffordd Rhyd y Ceirw once again. Turn right and retrace your steps to the old school at Graianrhyd, unless you started from the Treuddyn end, in which case turn left down the hill and follow the instructions from the ford and footbridge mentioned in point one to return to Ffordd yr Odyn.
