Paul Mattick was born on 13 March 1904 in Stolp (), Germany and died on 7 February 1981 in Cambridge (Mass.), USA (1). He grew up in Berlin and was trained as a toolmaker. At the age of fourteen he took part in the revolutionary movement of the time as a member of the "Freie Sozialistische Jugend", soon to be the communist youth league, and as an apprentices' delegate to the workers' council of the factories. When the German communist movement split in 1920 he sided with the left wing KAPD. He went to in 1921 to work in the Kloeckner factories and was active in the region as an agitator and organizer for the KAPD and its syndicalist counterpart "Allgemeine Arbeiter Union". Contacts with radical artists and intellectuals date from this period as well as first articles in newspapers and journals related with KAPD and AAU. Until the early thirties he occasionally tried literary forms to convey his views. In 1926 Mattick emigrated to the USA, but continued to publish articles, reviews and essays in the left communist press in Germany until 1930. He served as an editor when German-American socialist organizations in revived the long tradition of the Chicagoer Arbeiter-Zeitung with a monthly in 1931 (2). After 1929 he was involved with the IWW and worked with the unemployed workers' movement during the depression years. With ex-Wobblies and expellees from the Leninist Proletarian Party in 1934 he founded the United Workers Party, soon to be renamed, more appropriately, Group of Council Communists. The group held close contact with the Dutch group around Anton Pannekoek and published International Council Correspondence , Living Marxism and New Essays 1934-1943, Mattick doing most of the writing and almost all of the editorial work. Among the few external contributors were , Anton Pannekoek and Otto Rühle. Besides his work for these journals, he continued to write for the remaining Wobbly and left communist press in the USA and abroad. Within the USA, an independent left prospered for a time with journals such as Modern Monthly , International Review , Marxist Quarterly while German exile periodicals like Neue Deutsche Blätter , Sammlung and Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung offered some additional possibilities for German language publications. Measured by the output in print the 1930s and early 1940s may be called the most productive period of Mattick as a political writer. It ended during World War II, due to a general decline of the US left and, more specifically to the contradiction between their war effort and Mattick's uncompromising anti-war stand. During the next two decades, his possibilities of getting anything published were drastically reduced. From 1960 onwards Mattick reached a new audience, that first in the United States, Britain and France and a bit later also in Italy somehow preceded the formation of the "", but developed more or less in parallel with the student and protest movements in Western Germany and Scandinavia. Mattick continued to comment on politics of the day, but his specific relation with the new movement originated from its habitude to borrow its from the old labor movement. As a participant of that "old" movement Mattick had an unique authority when he commented on current views on the history of the labor movement, on marxism at large and on the specific subject he had focussed a thirty years earlier. Henryk Grossmann's study on capitalist accumulation and collapse, which he read soon after its publication in 1929 (3) and the experience of the Great Depression, had set the theme for a lifelong exploration of the Marxian critique of political economy focusing on the laws and limits of capitalist accumulation: In 1934 he had written a German language program for the IWW, which

International Institute of Social History 4 Paul Mattick Papers 1939-1981 (-1982)1939-1981 formulated tasks of the during the death crisis of the capitalist systems. (4) In 1936 he wrote a study on unemployment, relief and the movement of the unemployed for the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung which was published more than twenty years later. (5) When most people were convinced that state intervention provided a tool to control capitalist crises, Mattick embarked on a criticism of , delineating the limits of the mixed economy. (6) When he died he left a manuscript, where he restated the essentials of the Marxian critique of political economy and summarized his views on and as main historical forms of organized marxism. An assessment of recent economic theory where, among others, the current renaissance of marxist economics without a labor movement should have been treated in the tradition of the Marxian critique remained unwritten. (7) Paul Mattick was not the most prudent keeper of his own records. His correspondence with Roman Rosdolsky may serve as an example: Mattick used a typewriter but kept no copies of his own letters. When Rosdolsky died in 1967, Mattick apparently returned Rosdolky's letters to his widow and four years of intense dialogue left nearly no trace in Mattick's papers. Fortunately the near to complete correspondence, full of theoretical discussion and political comment, can be consulted in Rosdolsky's archives. (8) There are nevertheless 1785 letters covering a sixty year period of Mattick's life. Among the authors are companions of the revolutionary period after World War I (Gonschorek, Klingenberg, Josef Kohn), and a girl friend from his adolescence (Selma Babad). Letters by Wobblies and German Left Communists, in office or without, show Mattick about 1930 as a sort of mediator between "the two worlds", who gets implicated in the conflicts of both. From the 1930s and 1940s his closest comrades from the Group of Council Communists should be mentioned (Auerbach, Boelcke, Henssler, Rexroth) as well as the external contributors to Living Marxism etc. (Korsch, Pannekoek, Rühle). (9) Besides, there are names of more ore less prominent persons in the American independent left of those years (e.g. Calverton, Corey, Hook, Lovestone, Macdonald, Shachtman and Solon). And already in 1936 Mattick is approached as an expert witness on the European revolutions of 1917/18 (Fischer, Rothwell). Responding to a review by Mattick, Henryk Grossmann opens up a frequent correspondence in 1931, followed from 1934 onwards by sporadic letters of his exiled colleagues from the Institut für Sozialforschung (Horkheimer, Löwenthal and Pollock and a more lasting contact with Schumacher). From 1945 on there are letters by friends and family in Germany who, after the collapse of the "Third Reich", tell something about survival strategies during dictatorship, war, and allied occupation. 1078 letters date from the last two decades of Mattick's life. Some correspondents are his (younger) contemporaries and represent continuity of the old European left (e.g. Basso, Marcuse, Morf, Rubel), more belong to a younger generation that became active in the 1960s, but here it would be highly arbitrary to mention some (e.g. Bricianer, Buckmiller, Buhle) and to omit others (Kolko, Pozzoli, Siegel et al.). (10) It is more interesting to look at the chronological list, to follow the shift in time from the "old" to the "new left" among Mattick's correspondents during the 1960s and their spread in space from the USA through France, Germany and Italy to Portugal, Scandinavia and Mexico. Finally two correspondents should be mentioned: A.D. Garmond in the 1930s and Dinsmore Wheeler from 1945 to 1968 edited Mattick's English manuscripts. Both groups of letters allow one to look at the process of Mattick's work. This might be important, as the interval between writing and publication was often considerable due to limited possibilities to publish. Moreover, Wheeler was a personal friend, and what Mattick wrote to him (11) comments casually on more than twenty years of personal life. Here, a biographer may find a counterbalance to Mattick's notorious public restraint in personal matters. A brief glance at the bibliography reveals that only a small part of the manuscripts still exists. But among these are manuscript versions of Mattick's major "Marx and Keynes" and "Last refuge" (nrs 98-101; 130-138). There is "Unemployment and relief" (nrs 95-96), an English and a more detailed complement to his 1936 German study, and a series of popular lectures on "Business, economics and political economy" from the very core of Mattick's thinking (nrs 103-105), both unpublished.

International Institute of Social History 5 Paul Mattick Papers 1939-1981 (-1982)1939-1981

There are articles never published in their original (English or German) language. And there are the essays Mattick had to write and present periodically when he was a participant in a New Deal relief program for unemployed writers (nrs 84-94). These were certainly not meant to be published but he preserved them carefully nevertheless. Paul Mattick's papers came to the IISH step by step. Letters addressed to him by Karl Korsch and Anton Pannekoek he had already deposited himself in 1965. (12) After his death the institute first received in 1985 a collection of manuscripts, drafts and notes; then in 1991 and 1995 respectively the correspondence of Mattick's later and early years and finally in 1996 another collection of manuscripts.(13) This sequence in time had some consequences when Mattick's papers had to be arranged and listed. The letters of Korsch and Pannekoek had been available in the archives of their authors for years and it did not make much sense to change this afterwards.(14) The CORRESPONDENCE of the years 1945-1980 arrived in 1991 in a chronological order and was listed this way. In 1995 however, I found earlier letters (1921-1968) roughly arranged by authors and groups of authors. Although this arrangement offered some clues to the contents of that part of the correspondence, it was not very suitable to arrange the whole corpus. So the original sequence of the early letters was put on record;(15) thereafter these letters were arranged and listed chronologically with the later and greater part of the correspondence. The MANUSCRIPTS were rearranged chronologically as well. Where letters and manuscripts are undated, I derived and added in [] a provisional date from events, publications, etc. mentioned. Six folders with NOTES and EXCERPTS remained undated and are listed at random; here, close scrutiny is necessary to establish the relation with Mattick's work as completed in manuscripts or publications. In ANNEX I an interview is added which Paul Mattick gave in 1976 and ANNEX II contains two lists with additional information about contents and structure of the papers. The INDEX to the correspondence is listing all letters by author and gives cross references to organizations, periodicals, etc. The papers measure 0.8 metres. There are no restrictions to the consultation of the papers; copyright to all texts by Paul Mattick remains with Ilse Mattick and Paul Mattick jr. ANNEX I (temporal restriction): Until Michael Buckmiller has completed and revised the transcript of the interview (nr 146), consultation requires his written permission.
