TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT CLASS G. M. TAMÁS ne of the central questions of social theory has been the relationship Obetween class and knowledge, and this has also been a crucial question in the history of socialism. Differences between people – acting and knowing subjects – may influence our view of the chances of valid cognition. If there are irreconcilable discrepancies between people’s positions, going perhaps as far as incommensurability, then unified and rational knowledge resulting from a reasoned dialogue among persons is patently impossible. The Humean notion of ‘passions’, the Nietzschean notions of ‘resentment’ and ‘genealogy’, allude to the possible influence of such an incommensurability upon our ability to discover truth. Class may be regarded as a problem either in epistemology or in the philosophy of history, but I think that this separation is unwarranted, since if we separate epistemology and the philosophy of history (which is parallel to other such separations characteristic of bourgeois society itself) we cannot possibly avoid the rigidly-posed conundrum known as relativism. In speak- ing about class (and truth, and class and truth) we are the heirs of two socialist intellectual traditions, profoundly at variance with one another, although often intertwined politically and emotionally. I hope to show that, up to a point, such fusion and confusion is inevitable. All versions of socialist endeavour can and should be classified into two principal kinds, one inaugurated by Rousseau, the other by Marx. The two have opposite visions of the social subject in need of liberation, and these visions have determined everything from rarefied epistemological posi- tions concerning language and consciousness to social and political attitudes concerning wealth, culture, equality, sexuality and much else. -

The issue of the work gathers personal and historical as- pects which are leading to the so called „debt crisis“ in Portugal and the „PIGS“ States. It starts with the construction of the Agenda 2010 (inaugurated at the Lisbon Council 2000) which led to the German financial hegemony and its austerity dictat 10 years later. Therefore, I would like to show the work not only in Lisbon but also in the other „PIGS“ states. This discriminating term was invented by the rating agencies for the indebted countries Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Spain in 2011. I would like to show and modify the work in the special local contexts as well as to cooperate with other artists who are working about the same issue. This issue of indebtness and debt economy might be now pushed to the news of yesterday but is dominating seriously the daily life of many people. I believe also that artistic work has certain difficulties to react imme- diatly to political actuality. It needs time to „digest“ and find its ways of reflection and clarity. The work connects personal memories and images with so called scientific facts of the „debt crisis“ and dismantles them as (what Bourdieu called in his critique to the German finance technocrat Thietmeyer) a „deliberate delirium“. -

Yet Alma also pro- duced an extensive body of information graphics over the course of the 1930s. It is interesting to note that Professor Denis, himself, has only re cently come around to an acceptance of the relevance of the marginal school, largely as a consequence of the Soviet controversy. While most Western economists still seem to feel that a conflict exists between the Marxist labor theory of value and marginal theories of resource alloca tion, we can see some signs of a growing appreciation and reexamination of Marx. In his latest edition of Economics, Paul Samuelson now speaks approvingly of the Ricardo-Marx-Solow models of capital accumulation and the possibility of a falling profit rate as capital deepens. In a forth coming issue of Soviet Studies, Professor Howard Sherman takes serious issue with the prevailing view that there is a necessary conflict between Marxism and modern planning theory based on neo-classical concepts of marginal allocation. Over thirty years ago Paul Sweezy wrote: The fact is that Marxian economics and "capitalist" economics have entirely different spheres of application. The former offers us a theory of economic development, the latter a theory of economic equilibrium. They are complementary and not mutually exclusive. Each is supreme in its own field. Further Reading A bibliography on the communist left in the Netherlands cannot be limited to the sources and studies existing either in the Dutch language or in the Netherlands. The merging of the kapd current, descended from the Spartakusbund – with the Gorter and Pannekoek current – gave birth to an international revolutionary current, from 1920 onwards. This current developed simultaneously in a number of countries: Bulgaria, Russia, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Great Britain; then – during the 1930s – in France, Belgium, Denmark and in the United States. The Dutch communist left must be placed in this international context, which shows something of the state of the subject. The existence of archives and documents, dealing with German-Dutch left- communism, in almost ten languages, gave us an idea of the scope of the research-work. In this updated bibliography, we shall deliberately confine ourselves to a few coun- tries, more particularly the Netherlands and Germany. Pictorial Statistics Following the Vienna Method1 Otto Neurath
DOCUMENT picTorial sTaTisTics folloWing The Vienna MeThod1 otto Neurath Science tells us about stars, stones, plants, and animals, and likewise about people and their life together. Science supports its laws and observations based on experience. In its most modern incarnation, science is especially interested in preserving facts visually. Astronomical facts are being photographed directly, while the trajectories of stars, specters, and crystalline struc- tures are captured by photography in an indirect way. Photography shows us the behavior of ants and children, and even with audio recordings we are being acquainted through visualization. Where static photography is not suffi cient, cinema jumps into the fray. A fl eeting comparison between older and more recent research will teach us about this expansion of the visual protocol, with recording machines taking the place of manual entries. However, it is not only protocols that are using visual devices; the representation of results also increasingly uses them. Pedagogy seeks to invigorate the students’ activity not least by sub- jecting simple observations or scientifi c results to analysis, which in some cases may also include the combination of new forms. The drawing and the image are being joined by the model. We won’t be able to show successfully how gradually a system emerges from the depiction of individual things and assorted oddities until we have fur- ther developed our means of visual representation.
