Ao camarada Mefistófeles in memoriam. AGRADECIMENTOS Um texto sempre é mais que o amálgama de ideias, imagens e argumentos que o constitui. Textos são experiências, histórias, narrativas, afetos e relações humanas condensados seletivamente e grafados em forma de registro. Em suma, textos são vidas, e vidas assim mesmo, no plural, pois ultrapassam as coordenadas existenciais daqueles que tomaram a iniciativa de produzi-los. Mesmo uma tese acadêmica, com toda pretensão de pseudo-objetividade e a aura de legitimidade que a contorna na produção daquilo que alguns consideram como “discursos de verdade”, quando implícita ou explicitamente parece portar sentidos mais apurados para a realidade que desesperadamente buscamos, através da sedimentação de conceitos, teorias e hipóteses enredados para dar inteligibilidade a determinados eventos, fenômenos e processos sociais, não escapa das “armadilhas” da ineludível condição humana de estarmos projetados no âmago de tudo o que se coloca em relação conosco, como a tão conhecida maldição do rei Midas que transformava em ouro tudo que tocava: humanizamos (o que nem sempre é algo do qual devemos nos orgulhar) todas as coisas com as quais entramos em contato e relação. À diferença do monarca da cidade de Frígia, nosso processo de contágio nos reserva um “efeito-reciprocidade”: também somos e estamos parte das coisas, pessoas e ideias que alcançamos. Esta tese foi gestada com forte consciência do seu significado como texto e experiência. Ainda que não desenvolvida plenamente como o resultado de uma multiplicidade de encontros, intercâmbios, diálogos, vivências, relações, etc, ela é uma pequena amostra em potencial, pronta para germinar em algum terreno favorável, e não necessariamente pelas mãos do “autor”. Identificar toda uma complexa teia de relações do “cérebro” e “coração” social que a tornou possível é uma tarefa inglória tal como contabilizar os grãos de areia que fazem da praia uma realidade idílica e concreta. Portanto, serei grosseiramente arbitrário ao mencionar alguns dos seres humanos, não-humanos e não- seres que acredito haver tido uma incidência direta no processo de realização desse trabalho, o que não significa, a essa altura, um desprezo ou desconsideração pelo que não será nomeado. Aos não-nominados, minha mais sincera saudação e deferência à despeito de minhas deficiências mnemônicas, entre outras. Inicialmente quero agradecer àqueles que motivaram esse estudo: @s companheir@s zapatistas de Chiapas de todas as comunidades rebeldes dos cinco Caracóis que me receberam como irmão e camarada da “sociedade civil internacional”. It is interesting to note that Professor Denis, himself, has only re­ cently come around to an acceptance of the relevance of the marginal school, largely as a consequence of the Soviet controversy. While most Western economists still seem to feel that a conflict exists between the Marxist labor theory of value and marginal theories of resource alloca­ tion, we can see some signs of a growing appreciation and reexamination of Marx. In his latest edition of Economics, Paul Samuelson now speaks approvingly of the Ricardo-Marx-Solow models of capital accumulation and the possibility of a falling profit rate as capital deepens. In a forth­ coming issue of Soviet Studies, Professor Howard Sherman takes serious issue with the prevailing view that there is a necessary conflict between Marxism and modern planning theory based on neo-classical concepts of marginal allocation. Over thirty years ago Paul Sweezy wrote: The fact is that Marxian economics and "capitalist" economics have entirely different spheres of application. The former offers us a theory of economic development, the latter a theory of economic equilibrium. They are complementary and not mutually exclusive. Each is supreme in its own field. Not only has universal anarchy broken out among the reformers, but also every individual must admit to himself that he has no precise idea about what ought to happen. Their friendship and intellectual distance are such that the word pupil sounds off-key. As he wrote to his brother Al, though interested in the Austrian economist’s theories, he did not feel any particular influence. The personal relationship, however, was quite strong, as if he was the substitute for a missing child. There was a memorable debate between them, of which a record remains, thanks to Paul Samuelson’s ‘memoir’, which appeared in Newsweek, 13 April 1970, and the materials made available by John Bellamy Foster in the Monthly Review, May 2011. Winter 1946-47. Boston’s Socialist Party had asked Harvard’s Economics Department to host a debate on capitalism and socialism. Schumpeter regarded it as inappropriate that the discussion would take place in the context of his course, suggesting unsuccessfully that the Graduate Student Club would take the initiative. The debate had no sponsors, its protagonists being indeed Schumpeter and Sweezy.
