The May 1968 Archives: A Presentation of the Anti- Technocratic Struggle in May 1968 ANDREW FEENBERG The beginning of the May ’68 events coincided with a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conference on Marx. This conference brought together Marx scholars from all over the world to Paris, where they could witness the first stirrings of a revolution while debating the continuing validity of Marx’s work. I recall meeting one of these scholars, a prominent Italian Marxist, in the courtyard of the Sorbonne. He recognized me from my association with Herbert Marcuse, who was also at the UNESCO conference. I expected him to be enthusiastic in his support for the extraordinary movement unfolding around us, but on the contrary, he ridiculed the students. Their movement, he said, was a carnival, not a real revolution. How many serious-minded people of both the left and the right have echoed these sentiments until they have taken on the air of common sense! The May ’68 events, we are supposed to believe, were not real, were a mere pantomime. And worse yet, La pensée ’68 is blamed for much that is wrong with France today. I consider such views of the May ’68 events profoundly wrong. What they ignore is the political content of the movement. This was not just a vastly overblown student prank. I believe the mainstream of the movement had a political conception, one that was perhaps not realistic in terms of power politics, but significant for establishing the horizon of progressive politics since PhaenEx 4, no. -

Each year the volume of communal consumption grows more rapidly than the output of priced consumers goods. It is interesting to note that Professor Denis, himself, has only re cently come around to an acceptance of the relevance of the marginal school, largely as a consequence of the Soviet controversy. While most Western economists still seem to feel that a conflict exists between the Marxist labor theory of value and marginal theories of resource alloca tion, we can see some signs of a growing appreciation and reexamination of Marx. In his latest edition of Economics, Paul Samuelson now speaks approvingly of the Ricardo-Marx-Solow models of capital accumulation and the possibility of a falling profit rate as capital deepens. In a forth coming issue of Soviet Studies, Professor Howard Sherman takes serious issue with the prevailing view that there is a necessary conflict between Marxism and modern planning theory based on neo-classical concepts of marginal allocation. Over thirty years ago Paul Sweezy wrote: The fact is that Marxian economics and "capitalist" economics have entirely different spheres of application. The former offers us a theory of economic development, the latter a theory of economic equilibrium. They are complementary and not mutually exclusive. Each is supreme in its own field. The Elementary Roots of Raoul Vaneigem: “Humanity Dies So That An Economy in Which Mad Money Goes Round and Round Can Survive”1 What kind of environment did you grow up in? Did your childhood prepare the way for the rest of your journey? My childhood took place in Lessines, a small working-class town [in Belgium].2 The rock quarries defined the slums in which I lived, as opposed to the nice places, which were principally occupied by the bourgeoisie. At the time, class consciousness was, you might say, punctuated by the sirens that at specific times signaled the beginning and the end of work, pauses and accidents. My father, a railroad worker, regretted not being able to pursue university studies due to a lack of financial resources. He dreamed of a better fate for me, but not without warning me about those who became “traitors to their class” by climbing the social ladder. I owe to him the reservations that I had early on about the roles of the intellectual – guide, tribune, master thinker. The repugnance that is felt today concerning the deterioration of the so-called “elites” confirms the soundness of my reluctance. In La liberté enfin s’éveille au souffle de la vie,3 I show how and why the rulers are becoming increasingly stupid. Anyone who takes a step back from the harassment of media lies can easily verify the following: intellectual intelligence decreases with an increase in power, and sensible intelligence progresses in the presence of what is truly human. I have always accorded pride of place to the pleasures of knowledge, exploration, and the dissemination of acquired knowledge. -

Structural analyses of grammatical syntax reveal the reproduction of capitalist social structure within linguistic structure. Consider how the struggle of articulation is the struggle to make language work.* Assuming an analog mesh between social and docu-textual structures, certain experimental poetries can be read as fractal imaginations of anarcho-Marxist utopianism in their fierce disruption of linguistic convention. An experimental poetry of radical political efficacy must be instantiated by and within micro-social structures negotiated by practically critical attentions to the material conditions of the social web that upholds the writing, starting with writing’s primary dispersion into the social—publishing. Practical Anarchism: the Makhnovist Movement in the Ukraine, 1917Â

Flores, Eastern Washington University, undergraduate student, “Practical Anarchism: The Makhnovist Movement in the Ukraine, 1917–1921” Abstract: Anarchism was one of the most prominent revolutionary left-wing movements in 19th and 20th century Europe, even contending as a philosophy with Marxism in many socialist circles. However, anarchism is generally believed today to be unrealistic and impractical as a political ideology. When looking at the modern historical record though, this does not always seem to be the case. I plan to explore whether the Makhnovist movement in the Ukraine from 1917-1921 provides an exception to the idea that anarchist movements are never viable. This movement, guided in large part by anarcho-communist Nestor Makhno, was one of the first to take modern anarchism from theory into practice. Although its existence was brief and its ability to fully realize anarchist ideals was limited by the circumstances of the time, the question must be asked: does the Makhnovist movement serve as an example of practical anarchism? Flores Eastern Washington University [email protected] Undergraduate 1 On March 2, 1917, Nestor Makhno took his first steps outside the Butyrki Prison of Moscow in over eight years. As Russia was being delivered from the chains of Tsardom, so too was Makhno delivered from his imprisonment as a part of the emancipation of prisoners during the February Revolution.1 His body emerged weak and weary from the debilitating conditions of his imprisonment.2 His commitment to anarchism, his rebellious spirit, and his fervor to emancipate toiling people from “slavery under the yoke of State and Capital” however had only grown stronger despite the seemingly hopeless prospects.
