he Otter Valley rises in the Blackdown Hills and runs to the western end of Lyme Bay and is Tpart of the Jurassic Coast. The Permian and sandstone aquifer in the Otter Valley is one of Devon’s largest groundwater sources, supplying drinking water to 200,000 people. ^ Honiton The stunning location, complete with rolling hills and leafy woods, makes the Otter Valley a treasure trove to explore for anyone.

Ottery St Mary, birthplace of the Romantic poet Samuel Coleridge and famous for rolling fl aming tar barrels, sits in a prime position on the River Otter. With its magnifi cent church, independent shops, cafés and streets steeped in history, it is a great spot to while away the hours.

Only a few miles away lies the neighbouring town of Honiton. The market town was once known for its lace making, something that was introduced in the . In fact, in the 19th Century Queen Victoria was married in a gown made of Honiton Lace.

Not to miss while visiting is the award-winning Thelma Hulbert Gallery. The gallery promotes the practice and understanding of contemporary art and craft through an exciting exhibition programme with coordinating learning opportunities. ^ Ottery St. Mary Packed with plenty of eateries and shops the town is an antique hunters’ dream, boasting 15 or so dealers specialising in all sorts of antique treasures and rare books.

At the end of the valley, the river diverts into Lyme Bay at Budleigh Salterton, an unspoilt charming seaside town ideal for a quieter stay on the coastline. Budleigh boasts some wonderful gift shops, coastal walks and a warm welcome.

The Otter Valley has a great deal to offer visitors; a fascinating history, bustling market towns fi lled with cafés, restaurants and pubs surrounded by miles of country walks for ramblers. What’s not to enjoy?
