OTTERTON ANNUAL PARISH BOUNDARY WALK SPECIAL – 13th NOVEMBER 2021 Please join the Parish Council for all or part of this 10 mile adapted Parish Boundary Walk which will take in all the new commemorative war memorial waymarkers. This circular walk will start from The Green at 9.30am. Jane Bennett will be telling us about some of the Parish’s war dead who gave their lives for a better future. It is a circular walk of 10 miles, so please bring a picnic if you intend to walk all the way round with us. The route will travel clockwise around the Parish Boundary to , after which it will navigate a convoluted inland route, maybe taking in paths you have never walked before. All are welcome. If you would like to find out more about the route, please contact the Parish Clerk. At present we have erected 16 posts in memory of the Otterton World War 1 dead. There are plans to erect more posts in memory of World War 2 soldiers; so far funding has financed the first 2 posts. For a shorter walk, join us for the first 45 minutes to Bicton Bridge and then re-join us at Ladram Bay at 1.15pm for another 45 minute walk and learn about most of the soldiers listed on the posts.

Dear friends, I’m counting the weeks before I can put away my lawnmower for the winter! Gardening has never been a love of mine though I enjoy the fruits of the labours of others. I really struggle to name many flowers, trees or insects being a product of a largely urban upbringing. And yet, my appreciation for all things natural has grown year by year. I love gardens, even while I hate gardening. I love the wide open, widely different landscapes of deserts, forests, and jungles. I love mountains, even though I have a fear of heights and get into a cold sweat near to a cliff edge. Like everybody else, I am a mass of contradictions that sit perfectly well with me, thank you very much! Not everything in life has to be logical, rational or fit into a well thought out system. Life is messy, incoherent, riven by inconsistencies and illogical things that, for some reason, somehow make perfect sense to us. Life is mysterious and uncertain, but we try to banish both the mystery and the uncertainty of life, especially in our modern secular western culture. In fact, one of my favourite sayings is: “The certainty of misery is generally preferred to the misery of uncertainty.” We try and force life into a straitjacket and make it conform to rules and expectations, but in truth, as Woody Allen once said “The only certainties in life are death and taxes.” The lady who brought that phrase about misery to my attention was an art counsellor and friend called Denise who was helping me get through the death of my first wife. Denise is also now long dead herself, so she has embraced that final mystery. What binds the mystery together is a concept we call Love, which for Christians we know also as God and in knowing God, we find peace with this unfathomable mystery that is Life. Love and prayers, Martin

Brenda Noble and family would like to say a huge thank you for all the help, the lovely cards and messages they received, and also for the cakes for Colin’s funeral. Everything was most welcome and much appreciated.

OTTERTON PARISH COUNCIL Firstly: I am writing this on 18th September so it is with some trepidation that I say ‘hooray’ the hatched white lines for the virtual pavement have been repainted! (There remains an element of ‘we’ll believe it when we see it’) However, it seems that the regular feedback to Highways has paid off. Huge thanks to Claire Wright, Jess Bailey and everyone else who has contributed to getting this work done. Dates for your diary: Lots going on for the Parish Council in the next few months and it would be great if as many residents as are able join in – many hands make light work. Monday 4th October: Otterton Parish Council meeting commencing 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All members of the public are welcome and comments on items on the agenda will be heard. If you would like to add an item to the agenda, please contact the clerk at least 7 days before the meeting. Saturday 9th October: Brook clean up. Please join Councillors from 10.00am in the brook. Our aim is to clear as many plants and as much debris as possible before the bad weather starts. Huge thanks to Sam Walker of Stantyway Farm who has agreed to take away the weeds etc. 30th October 2021 - end date for tenders: The PC seeks tenders for the grass cutting work in the village, namely the Green, the Parish cemetery, Jubilee playpark & Stantyway recreation field for a 3 year period commencing April 2022. For more detail contact the clerk on [email protected] Saturday 13th November: Boundary walk – thanks to Iain Ure for organising this. Please see separate notice in this newsletter and the Parish Notice Board. Saturday 4th December: Keep Saturday morning free for the ever-popular Reindeer Run, one of the most important annual fundraisers for Otterton School; more details to come. If you would like to get involved, please contact the Clerk as below. Thank you. OTTERTON C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a great start to the new school year at Otterton. We have welcomed 3 new children and their families to Reception and 4 children into our newly opened pre-school with another 3 due to start with us after Christmas. The children have come back to school ready and eager to learn and have settled brilliantly into the new class structure that we have put in place. As we are no longer confined to bubbles, the children are able to mix across the school and they have really enjoyed having contact during breaktimes and assemblies. The main school building has been decorated over the summer, with 2 rooms also having been recarpeted; if you have a look on our Facebook page there are some photos of how lovely it is all looking. Towards the end of last term, we were lucky enough to have been given a grant from the Norman Family Trust for some new and much needed outdoor equipment; this grant means a huge amount to our school and the children within our care. It has meant that we have been able to order some lovely new equipment; we have already taken delivery of some items, and some are due with us soon. We feel really thankful to all involved with making this possible. We have lots of exciting plans for the first half term back in school - football club is back up and running as well as an after-school sports club; we are hoping to attend a number of sporting events and we have a trip planned to Mosque for some of the younger children. We are also hoping to be able to hold an Open Day for prospective parents so keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for dates. In the meantime, if you would like to arrange a visit to us then please call us on 01395 568326 or email [email protected]

OTTERTON COMMUNITY SHOP The shop is committed to supporting local producers whenever we can, and we had no hesitation in agreeing to stock the Netta’s Kitchen range of jams, chutneys and pickles. These are made in Budleigh by Launchpad which is a day service offering training opportunities to adults with learning disabilities, as a stepping-stone into regular employment. Everything is made in small batches, excellent and modestly priced. Mixed fruit jam, rhubarb and ginger jam, mango chutney and apple, date and tomato chutney are amongst those available. Netta’s Kitchen is well worth supporting. Also spare a thought for another small local producer, Budleigh Bees. It has been an awful year for bees, and honey is in short supply so again, you can show your support for a hard-pressed supplier by putting a little honey on your bread. Whether from Netta’s Kitchen or Budleigh Bees, you will find the real taste of East in the Community Shop.

OTTERTON GARDEN CLUB We are very pleased to say that our Garden Club will be up and running again in October and hope that we will have your continued support after what has been a very difficult time for all of us. Our first talk will take place on Tuesday 19th October at 7.30pm in Otterton Village Hall and will be given by April Marjoram of The Devon Gardens Trust. April will tell us about the life of W J Godfrey. William Godfrey, an horticulturalist and nurseryman, played a prominent part in the civic life of Exmouth, including campaigning for allotments. He was also a plant breeder who introduced many new varieties of chrysanthemum, pelargoniums, oriental poppies and Canterbury Bells, perhaps some of which can even be found in our gardens today. Visitors are very welcome; admission to talks is free for members and £4 for non-members so please come along. It will be lovely to see you all again. For more information about the club please go to www.ottertongardenclub.co.uk

OTTERTON FILM CLUB The film to start the 2021/22 season, and the first for quite some time, will be the feelgood film “Lion”. A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometres from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. This will be screened on Friday 8th October in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Members £2.00, Non-members £5.00. Please do come along and support your Film Club.

CLINTON DEVON ESTATES – An autumn round up – from Kate Ponting, Countryside Learning Officer At Clinton Farms harvest has finished and the final cut of grass taken to make silage. Direct supply of organic milk has seen a recent up-turn. Since a selection of milkshake syrups was installed beside the milk vending machine in the village, we have seen sales of milk increase by up to 50% each week! Bicton Arena held a very successful 5* horse trials, the first event at this level, last month. It was fantastic to see so many top-level riders competing here in and a trio of Olympic riders finished on the podium with Gemma Tattersall the overall winner. The team are now gearing up for their third international horse trials of the year, which will take place between 20th-24th October. www.bicton-arena.co.uk Grazing the Pebblebed Heaths National Nature Reserve is a vital part of managing the heathland habitats sustainably, maintaining the open landscape and creating the ideal conditions for the special wildlife that make their homes here. The ponies have left but cattle will continue grazing Hawkerland, Bicton Common and small areas of Common until later this month. Unfortunately, cattle welfare hasn't been a priority for all visitors this summer and we were frustrated by the deliberate removal of posts forming part of the electric fencing loop NE of Woodbury Castle. This dangerous activity was repeated over several weeks. Our team never established the culprit but were heartened and very grateful for the support so many local people gave. Thank you to those who messaged with reports or changed their walking route to keep extra eyes on the ground throughout the day. www.pebblebedheaths.org Read full length article including an update on what you can expect to see happening this autumn, as part of the Lower Otter Restoration Project, at www.otterton.info or for full project details visit www.lowerotterrestorationproject.co.uk [email protected] 07917 104250

THE LOOKOUT FROM LADRAM – from Carla Newman, Marketing Manager As the end of season 2021 approaches we're reminiscing on what a year it’s been! Despite a rather unpredictable summer with regard to the weather, we’ve had a park full of happy smiling faces enjoying themselves. Recent highlights include the sensational RAF Red Arrows flypast as part of the Airshow, plus our official play park opening with TV presenter Josie Gibson from ‘This Morning’. For the foreseeable future we remain closed for day visitors; however, we are hopeful that we’ll be able to offer Winter Pool Membership for locals once we close our doors for the season in November. Any winter plans are obviously dependent on government guidelines or restrictions which may be in place. More information will be released shortly. The search has now begun for inspiring landscape imagery to use within our 2022 calendar. Have you captured some stunning local scenery which you feel deserves pride of place as one of our 12 top shots within our calendar next year? We're looking for photos taken throughout the season, in all weather, of our splendid location plus the flora and fauna. To enter, email your imagery to [email protected] and we'll be sure to credit you. As we move into the winter months, we once again appreciate your understanding with regard to our caravan movements. We will endeavour, where possible, to list these in advance on the Friends of Otterton Facebook page to minimise any disruption to you.
