IMMEDIATE RELEASE - SAN DIEGO
Franco Zeffirelli, noted film director, will be the Commencement
speaker for the graduate, undergraduate Commencement to be held at the
University of San Diego's Alcala Park campus at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21.
180 men and 180 women will be presented Bachelors degrees in the
Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Nursing.
Masters degrees in these disciplines will be received by 121 men and women.
The Board of Trustees awarded Mr. Zeffirelli the honorary degree
of Doctor of Humane Letters. In announcing the degree, President Author E.
Hughes stated, 11 Franco Zeffirelli will be awarded the Doctor of Humane
Letters for his talents and gifts as a director of outstanding films;
gifts which he has shared with a world much in need of beauty. In parti
cular, the Board of Trustees of this Catholic university singles out his
internationally acclaimed television drama, 11 Jesus of Nazareth. 11 This
accurate and sensitive portrayal of the life of Christ is highly significant
and continues to bring society an understanding of Christ which will most
assuredly enrich our lives. 11
Zeffirelli is currently directing his first American film, a
modernized version of the 1931 hit 11 The Champ," for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
In addition to his outstanding global reputation as a film maker, he has
also directed and designed many plays and operas. His film credits include
11 The Taming of the Shrew," "Romeo and Juliet," and 11 Brother Sun, Sister Moon."
Zeffirelli's television drama 11 Jesus of Nazareth 11 was presented at Easter, 1977. # # # #
