Volume XXV No. 21 Hometown Newspaper for Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Glenwood, Locust Valley and Brookville Week of 2/4/16 75C Glen Cove Senior Center and North Coast Subaru Support Free Medical Transport for Residents Volunteer Drivers Wanted For almost ten years, the Glen Cove Senior Center and North Coast Subaru have partnered on a unique transportation initiative for Glen Cove residents. The Glen Cove Medical Transport program provides free transportation to all Glen Cove residents for doctor appointments, physical therapy sessions and any other non-emergency doctor, hospital, lab or medical center visits. “Due to the popularity of this program, we are looking for more volunteer drivers – individuals with a valid driver’s license and a big heart,” said Carol Waldman, Executive Director of the Glen Cove Senior Center. “The program runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. three days a week; with more volunteer drivers, we would like to expand the program from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.” While Glen Cove’s Medical Transport program began years earlier, in 2007 North Coast Subaru donated a vehicle to provide additional help to meet the community’s non-emergency transportation needs. Jul 18, 2016/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, August 5, through Wednesday, August 24, BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, a sprawling collection of Dante’s essential film and television work along with offbeat favorites hand-picked by the director. Additionally, Dante will appear in person at the August 5 screening of Gremlins (1984), August 6 screening of Matinee (1990), and the August 7 free screening of rarely seen The Movie Orgy (1968). Original and unapologetically entertaining, the films of Joe Dante both celebrate and skewer American culture. Dante got his start working for Roger Corman, and an appreciation for unpretentious, low-budget ingenuity runs throughout his films. The series kicks off with the essential box-office sensation Gremlins (1984—Aug 5, 8 & 20), with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy (Galligan) finds out the hard way what happens when you feed a Mogwai after midnight and mini terrors take over his all-American town. Continuing the necessary viewing is the “uninhibited and uproarious monster bash,” (Michael Sragow, New Yorker) Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990—Aug 6 & 20). Dante’s sequel to his commercial hit plays like a spoof of the original, with occasional bursts of horror and celebrity cameos. In The Howling (1981), a news anchor finds herself the target of a shape-shifting serial killer in Dante’s take on the werewolf genre. -

Aspects of Film Noir: Alan Ladd in the 40'S
The Museum of Modern Art 50th Anniversary NO. 38 •JO RELEASE ON OR BEFORE JULY 11, 1980 "ASPECTS OF FILM NOIR: ALAN LAPP IN THE 40*5" OPENS AT MoMA ON JULY 11, 1980 A series of four important Alan Ladd films forms ASPECTS OF FILM NOIR: ALAN LADD IN THE 40'S, an exhibition running from July 11 through July 15, 1980 at The Museum of Modern Art. To be shown in the series are: THIS GUN FOR HIRE, Ladd's first starring role; THE GLASS KEY; THE BLUE DAHLIA; and the 1949 Paramount production of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, THE GREAT GATSBY. The films will be shown in 35mm studio prints made available by Universal/MCA and the UCLA Film Archives. Notes from The Museum's Department of Film indicate that "During the 1940's Hollywood studios produced a large number of crime melodramas whose stylistic con sistency has since been given the name of 'Film Noir'. These shadowy and urbane films not only commanded consummate studio craftsmanship, but enabled a charismatic group of performers to express the tensions that provided the thematic content for the 'Film Noir'. At Paramount Pictures during the 1940's perhaps the emblematic figure of the 'Film Noir' was Alan Ladd." The series opens with THIS GUN FOR HIRE at 8:30 PM on Friday, July 11 (to be repeated at 6 PM on Sunday, July 13). The film was directed by Frank Tuttle in 1942 with Ladd, Veronica Lake and Robert Preston and runs 81 minutes. THIS GUN FOR HIRE was the film that launched Ladd's career. -
Using Film and Critical Pedagogy in the Standards-Based Classroom
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF John D. Divelbiss for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on April 28, 2014. Title: Re-Viewing the Canon: Using Film and Critical Pedagogy in the Standards-based Classroom Abstract approved: __________________________________________________________________ Jon R. Lewis This thesis analyzes the efficacy of emancipatory (critical) pedagogical practices in an educational climate of standards-based reform. Using two films noir of the blacklist era—Body and Soul and Crossfire—as the core texts of a unit in a secondary school curriculum, I argue that an emphasis on student agency and a de-centering of curriculum and instruction is not only compatible with national reforms like the Common Core State Standards but is essential for English/language arts classrooms in the 21st century. In addition to a scholarly review of critical pedagogy and media literacy, and close readings of the two films themselves, this thesis also ends with an informal case study in which both films-as-texts were taught to 9th grade students. By combining theory and practice, I was able to model the praxis at the heart of critical pedagogy, what Paulo Freire calls in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, “reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it.” The films of the blacklist match current national mandates for relevant texts, for media and visual literacy, and for authentic and emancipatory pedagogy. Narrowing down even further on two highly-regarded films released in 1947, the same year the blacklist was initiated, allows for an analysis of the artistic and aesthetic complexities of the texts as well as the high-stakes terms of the political engagements of the blacklist. -

Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017). -

Among these Japanese American transnational migrants, 10,000-20,000 returned to the United States before the outbreak of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and became known as Kibei (“return to America”). Tracing the transnational movements of these second-generation U.S.-born Japanese Americans complicates the existing U.S.-centered paradigm of immigration and ethnic history.
