Integrating Video Clips Into the “Legacy Content” of the K–12 Curriculum: TV, Movies, and Youtube in the Classroom
Integrating Video Clips into the “Legacy Content” of the K–12 Curriculum: TV, Movies, and YouTube in the Classroom Ronald A. Berk Disclaimer: This chapter is based on a presentation given at the annual Evaluation Systems Conference in Chicago. Since the content of the October 2008 presentation focused on using videos in the classrooms of the future, this chapter will not be able to capture the flavor and spirit of the actual videos shown. The audience exhibited a range of emotions, from laughter to weeping to laughter to weeping. Unfortunately, this print version will probably only bring about the weeping. Keep a box of tissues nearby. Enjoy. Using videos in teaching is not new. They date back to prehistoric times, when cave instructors used 16 mm projectors to show cave students examples of insurance company marketing commercials in business courses. Now even DVD players are history. So what’s new? There are changes in four areas: (1) the variety of video formats, (2) the ease with which the technology can facilitate their application in the classroom, (3) the number of video techniques a teacher can use, and (4) the research on multimedia learning that provides the theoretical and empirical support for their use as an effective teaching tool. A PC or Mac and a LCD projector with speakers can easily embed video clips for a PowerPoint presentation on virtually any topic. This chapter examines what we know and don’t know about videos and learning. It begins with detailed reviews of the theory and research on videos and the brain and multimedia learning. -

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation. -

Yellowjackets Cohearence
YELLOWJACKETS COHEARENCE An outgrowth of L.A. Express guitarist Robben Ford’s band founded in 1977, the Yellowjackets came to full buzzing flight four years later with its debut eponymous jazz-funk album, a salient introduction to a new-styled electric fusion of jazz and R&B—a modern take on Weather Report, if you will—for the post Return to Forever/Headhunters decade. The band was an immediate and controversial hit at the time when the jazz pendulum was beginning to swing back in the acoustic direction. Some skeptics didn’t give the Yellowjackets a chance to survive, but here it is 35 years later—hardly trailing the segmented 40-year longevity of MJQ—and the group stretches its impressive longevity by continuing to evolve artistically with its third Mack Avenue Records recording, Cohearence. With two founding members—pianist/keyboardist Russell Ferrante and drummer Will Kennedy—and its longtime reeds player Bob Mintzer (a Jacket since 1990) and a brand-new virtuoso electric bassist, Australia-born Dane Alderson, the Yellowjackets cover a range of jazz flavors, including a rousing Weather Report jazz fusion vibe, a swinging switch-up on John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps,” a moving rendition of a folk song classic, a funky soul-jazz excursion and a chamber jazz-like grace in the album end-song, “Coherence.” With its pockets of halcyon, buoyance, mystery, tumult and whimsy, Cohearence plays out as a multifaceted documentation of how far the once fusion band has come. “There’s a lot of gratitude,” Ferrante says of the band’s 35th birthday. -

GRAMMY® Award-Winning Quartet Yellowjackets Presents Jackets XL Available November 6 Via Mack Avenue Records
GRAMMY® Award-winning Quartet Yellowjackets Presents Jackets XL Available November 6 Via Mack Avenue Records In Celebratory 25th Album, the Time-Honored Jazz Ensemble Joins Forces with the WDR Big Band to Create a Dynamic New Sound As a tight, longstanding jazz ensemble, Yellowjackets has explored a universe all its own of electro- acoustic soundscapes in its nearly four-decade history. Since the band’s eponymous 1981 debut album, Yellowjackets has consistently forged ahead with innovative and challenging artistic statements. For Jackets XL, its 25th album and fourth for Mack Avenue Music Group, the band continues to stretch and reinvent itself with an exciting, full-bodied collaboration with the superb WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany. The project combines the shapeshifting, multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning quartet with the renowned big band, re-imagining well-known band originals with dynamic new arrangements that feature twists and turns, textures and colors, moving harmonies and bold solos. “This band has never been one to rest on its laurels,” says tenor saxophonist/EWI player Bob Mintzer, a Yellowjacket since 1990 and the WDR Big Band principal conductor since 2016. “The Yellowjackets are very adept at reinventing. The four of us are the most adaptable musicians I’ve ever worked with. Any setting, any style, we know we can do it. As for the WDR, they’re one of the best large jazz ensembles in the world. I knew the two groups would make for a nice marriage.” The band also comprises founder, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, drummer Will Kennedy and electric bassist Dane Alderson in his third recording for the group.
