His radio program Footlight Parade is heard on 100 public radio stations and, under the title On the Aisle, on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. He has created nearly 100 narrated concerts and cabarets for two TMTP’s series: The Song Is You! and Rendezvous, and for TMTP’s record label, Harbinger Records, he has co-produced (with Ken Bloom) recordings of classic American theater and film songs featuring such vocalists as Peggy Lee and Maxine Sullivan. Harbinger’s archival releases include discs devoted to the songs of Richard Rodgers, Hugh Martin, Sheldon Harnick, John Kander, and Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. REBECCA PALLER (Producer and Annotator) was associate editor of Where magazine in New York and Northern Ohio Live in Cleveland, and has written about the arts for Opera News, Opera, American Theatre, Vogue and Playbill. Since 2000 she has been associate curator of the Paley Center for Media (formerly the Museum of Television & Radio) in New York. Among the exhibitions she has organized at the Paley Center are “The New York Philharmonic: A Radio & Television Tradition”; “A Centennial Celebration of George Balanchine”; “The Artistry of Leontyne Price”; and “Musicals on Television.” She is the co-author of Julius Rudel’s 2013 memoir, First and Lasting Impressions. MARK LOGIES (Producer and Restoration Engineer), the technical supervisor for TMTP’s radio programs, Footlight Parade and On the Aisle, has been a recording engineer for more than 40 years. Among his projects: national blues artists Travis Haddix and Jimmy Landers, jazz performers Bill Gidney and Ed Michaels, and flamenco guitarist (and Juno Award winner) Robert Michaels. He has provided technical expertise to recording console manufacturer Daniel N. Flickinger, Century/Advent Recording (precursor to Telarc), Cathedral Teleproductions, Alpha Audio Associates and API/LFE Instruments, designing electronic products used in places as diverse as chocolate maker Philadelphia Candies and the space program at NASA. DAVID KANZEG (Producer) worked until his retirement for ideastream, the multi-media company that owns Cleveland’s public radio and TV stations; there he spent 27 years as director of programming. Earlier he held similar posts at WNYC in New York, at Ohio University and in Huntsville, Alabama, as well as being an on-air personality at stations in Michigan and New York and a member of the faculty at SUNY College at Buffalo. A native Clevelander, he has published and lectured widely on Douglas Moore’s opera The Ballad of Baby Doe (one of the operas in the Musicarnival archive) and the historical story on which it is based, leading to his co-founding the DoeHEADS and an extensive website, www.babydoe.org. BARBARA PERRIS (Annotator) has worked in book publishing for many years and has an enduring interest in the American musical. -iv- EVELYN WARD (Researcher, the John L. Price, Jr. Musicarnival Archives) enjoyed a long career at Cleveland Public Library’s literature department, where she participated in the process of acquiring and caring for the Musicarnival Archives. Though now retired, she continues to assist in the maintenance of this outstanding collection. Musical theater historians KEN BLOOM and the late STANLEY GREEN wrote the plot summaries of the musicals. Both were members of the Scherer Library’s advisory board.     Calvary Theatre Arts Presents TheFantasticks Book and Lyrics by Music by TOM JONES HARVEY SCHMIDT March 11 - 21, 2021 Author Biographies Composer Harvey Schmidt and lyricist Tom Jones are the legendary writing team best known for shaping the American musical landscape with their 1960 hit, The Fantasticks. After its Off-Broadway opening in May 1960, it went on to become the longest-running production in the history of the American stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world. Their first Broadway show, 110 in the Shade, was revived on Broadway in a new production starring Audra MacDonald. I Do! I Do!, their two-character musical starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston, was a success on Broadway and is frequently done around the country. For several years Jones and Schmidt worked privately at their theatre workshop, concentrating on small-scale musicals in new and often untried forms. The most notable of these efforts were Celebration, which moved to Broadway, and Philemon, which won an Outer Critics Circle Award. They contributed incidental music and lyrics to the Off-Broadway play Colette starring Zoe Caldwell, then later did a full-scale musical version under the title Colette Collage. The Show Goes On, a musical revue featuring their theatre songs and starring Jones and Schmidt, was presented at the York Theatre, and Mirette, their musical based on the award-winning children's book, was premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. In addition to an Obie Award and the 1992 Special Tony Award for The Fantasticks, Jones and Schmidt were inducted into the Broadway Hall of Fame at the Gershwin Theatre, and on May 3, 1999 their 'stars' were added to the Off-Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

    A Study of Music as an Integral Part of the Spoken Drama in the American Professional Theatre: 1930-1955 By MAY ELIZABETH BURTON A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA August, 1956 PREFACE This is a study of why and how music is integrated with spoken drama in the contemporary American professional theatre. Very little has been written on the subject, so that knowledge of actual practices is limited to those people who are closely associated with commercial theatre-- composers, producers, playwrights, and musicians. There- fore, a summation and analysis of these practices will contribute to the existing body of knowledge about the contemporary American theatre. It is important that a study of the 1930-1955 period be made while it is still contemporary, since analysis at a later date would be hampered by a scarcity of detailed production records and the tendency not to copyright and publish theatre scores. Consequently, any accurate data about the status of music in our theatre must be gathered and re- corded while the people responsible for music integration are available for reference and correspondence. Historically, the period from 1930 to 1^55 is important because it has been marked by numerous fluc- tuations both in society and in the theatre. There are evidences of the theatre's ability to serve as a barometer of social and economic conditions. A comprehension of the ii degree and manner in which music has been a part of the theatre not only will provide a better understanding of the relationship between our specific theatre idiom and society, but suggests the degree to which it differs from that fostered by previous theatre cultures.
