John Hunt’s most valuable discography devoted to the Staatskapelle Dresden was again helpful. Further updating has been undertaken in addition to the generous assistance of Philip Stuart via his LSO discography which he compiled for the Orchestra’s centenary in 2004 and has kept updated. Inevitably there are a number of missing credits for producers and engineers in the earliest years as these facts no longer survive. Additionally some exact dates have not been tracked down. Led by Founding Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum, the Verdi Chorus is the only choral group in Southern California that focuses primarily on the dramatic and diverse music for opera chorus. This program, which Ketchum humorously calls the Rom-Com of opera, will feature selections from two Verdi operas I vespri siciliani and Ernani, three Donizetti operas - Don Pasquale, La fille du r giment and L'elisir d'amore, as well as operatic sequences from Bizet's Les p cheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers), Delibes' Lakm , and Puccini's La rondine. The program will feature four guest soloists: critically acclaimed Los Angeles Opera favorite Jamie Chamberlin, praised for her shimmering tones and star-struck vulnerability by Opera News; her equally acclaimed husband, tenor Nathan Granner, one of the original The American Tenors (Sony Classical), and known for his vibrant and flexible voice (The Boston Globe) and for possessing utter control of a ravishing mixed head sound (Opera News), celebrated mezzo soprano Danielle Marcelle Bond, who was hailed by the Los Angeles Times with a Brava! for her performance in Long Beach Opera's production of John Adams' Death of Klinghoffer ; and renowned baritone Roberto Perlas G mez who, with over 100 roles to his credit, has performed extensively throughout the United States. -

Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts opened with the premiere of one of the most controversial works in history. Situated on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., the Kennedy Center was conceptualized by the National Cultural Center Act under the legislation of President Eisenhower. John F. Kennedy was an avid supporter of the arts and took control of fundraising for the Cultural Center. Two months after his death, Congress decided to name the Center after him, stating that the Center would be a “living memorial” for the late President. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis asked Leonard Bernstein to create a piece that would be played at the inauguration of the Kennedy Center (kennedy-center.org). A friend and former school-mate of the late president, Bernstein composed Mass in honor of John F. -

ROBYNCATHCART: M.A. CANDIDATEIN MUSICOLOGY THEUNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA, VICTORIA BC -The Singing School of Manuel Garcia IZ- Supervisor: Dr. Gordana Lazarevich December 12,2003 University of Victoria PO Box 1700 STN CSC Victoria, BC V8W 2Y2 Canada Supervisor: Dr. Gordana Lazarevich A~STRACT Manuel Garcia 11 (1805-1906) is perhaps the greatest teacher of voice in history, and his approach, stated in A Complete Treatise on the Art of Singing, Parts One (1841) and Two (1847), became one of the principal methods of vocal instruction during his time. By tracing Garcia 11's methodology, based on the Italian Schools of Singing and be1 canto opera, it will become clear that his type of voice building holds many of the keys needed to unlock the voices of singers today. Analysis of Garcia II's vocal treatises, combined with first hand research conducted with faculty throughout three prominent Canadian university voice programs, will further substantiate the claim that Garcia 11 is a pivotal figure within the landscape of vocal pedagogy, also putting to rest several misconceptions (i.e. vocal onset and the coup de la glotte, and vocal registers) concerning his teachings. Respected internationally for his contributions to the worlds of classical voice and opera, performance practice, voice science, and pedagogy during his lifetime, Garcia II's theories on vocal production remain intact in current vocal pedagogy, despite shifts in the paradigms of musical, cultural, social and vocal aesthetics.
