  • Alex Trebek 1940-2020
ALEX TREBEK 1940-2020 CULVER CITY, CALIF. (November 8, 2020) – JEOPARDY! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends. He was 80 years old. Alex was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2019, and he continued to host JEOPARDY! for the next 18 months. Throughout that time, Alex was open and public about his battle with cancer. JEOPARDY! episodes hosted by Alex will air through December 25, 2020 (his last day in the studio was October 29). The show is not announcing plans for a new host at this time. Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Alex hosted dozens of game shows before becoming the host of JEOPARDY! in its syndicated debut in 1984. He hosted more than 8,200 JEOPARDY! episodes over the course of nearly 37 seasons, setting a Guinness World Record for hosting the most episodes of a single game show. Alex won the Daytime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Game Show Host seven times and was honored with Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He received the Order of Canada honor from his native land in 2017. “This is an enormous loss for the JEOPARDY! staff, crew and all of Alex’s millions of fans. He was a legend of the industry that we were all lucky to watch night after night for 37 years. Working beside him for the past year and a half as he heroically continued to host JEOPARDY! was an incredible honor. His belief in the importance of the show and his willingness to push himself to perform at the highest level was the most inspiring demonstration of courage I have ever seen.

  • Brief Report on the Implementation of the FCTC's Core Articles In
Brief report on the implementation of the FCTC’s core articles in Cambodia up to March 2012 I. BACKGROUND Cambodia ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) on 15 November 2005. The draft Law on Tobacco Control was developed in 2003, even before the country ratified the FCTC, by the Ministry of Health (MoH), and reviewed several times by the Economic, Social, Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), and the Council of Jurists (CoJ) of the Council of Ministers (CoM). The last modified version was completed in late 2010, and has waited for re-submission to the CoM by the MoH. The National Center for Health Promotion (NCHP) is the technical department responsible for tobacco control under the MoH where tobacco control policies are required to move up from this basic level. However, NCHP has used several excuses to delay the re-submission of the draft law. The director of the NCHP quoted by Phnom Penh Post that the CoM needs data on mortality rate related to tobacco use in Cambodia to endorse the draft law. That is why he needs sometime to conduct a research to response to the need. When WHO released the report on mortality attributed to tobacco in mid 2010, then he lobbied the Minister of Health to wait for him to conduct a research, this time, on economic cost of tobacco before re-submission the draft law. It is known that it takes at least three to five years to complete such a research if funding exists. WHO and NGOs are very active in pushing forward the draft law.

  • Representations and Discourse of Torture in Post 9/11 Television: an Ideological Critique of 24 and Battlestar Galactica
REPRESENTATIONS AND DISCOURSE OF TORTURE IN POST 9/11 TELEVISION: AN IDEOLOGICAL CRITIQUE OF 24 AND BATTLSTAR GALACTICA Michael J. Lewis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2008 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown Advisor Through their representations of torture, 24 and Battlestar Galactica build on a wider political discourse. Although 24 began production on its first season several months before the terrorist attacks, the show has become a contested space where opinions about the war on terror and related political and military adventures are played out. The producers of Battlestar Galactica similarly use the space of television to raise questions and problematize issues of war. Together, these two television shows reference a long history of discussion of what role torture should play not just in times of war but also in a liberal democracy. This project seeks to understand the multiple ways that ideological discourses have played themselves out through representations of torture in these television programs. This project begins with a critique of the popular discourse of torture as it portrayed in the popular news media. Using an ideological critique and theories of televisual realism, I argue that complex representations of torture work to both challenge and reify dominant and hegemonic ideas about what torture is and what it does. This project also leverages post-structural analysis and critical gender theory as a way of understanding exactly what ideological messages the programs’ producers are trying to articulate.

Detail of Entry Copyright © 2005, glbtq, inc. a photograph by Angela Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Brinskele (© Angela Brinskele). Versatile actor Alan Cumming has performed a wide variety of roles on stage, screen, Image courtesy Angela Brinskele. and television. He has earned numerous awards for his acting and also for his support of glbtq causes. The younger son of a forester and a homemaker, Alan Cumming was born January 27, 1965 in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. He spent his first year in the neighboring town of Dunkeld, where his father worked on a large estate. The family then moved to Fassfern on the west coast of the country, and three years later settled on the east coast, on another estate near Carnoustie. As a child growing up on an isolated estate he lacked playmates--his only sibling was six years older than he--and so he amused himself by acting out stories of his own invention. His cast, he recalled, consisted of "me and my dog. And imaginary others." After graduating from Carnoustie High School, Cumming worked for a year at a publishing company in Dundee, initially in the fiction department and then interviewing bands for a pop culture magazine called TOPS. Cumming then enrolled in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. While attending the academy Cumming met and married fellow student Hilary Lyon. After graduating in 1985, Cumming and a friend, Forbes Masson, developed a stand-up comedy act that proved extremely popular.

August, 2005 Re: The Evolution of The Pilates Method: The Fletcher Work™ To Whom It May Concern, The Fletcher Work is the authentic evolution of the Pilates’ method. To be accurate and legitimate, any journalistic inquiry into contemporary Pilates must necessarily include this dynamic contribution. On behalf of The Ron Fletcher Company, I encourage you to take time to review the enclosed materials. Pilates is more than a contemporary fitness phenomenon. It is an extraordinarily effective conditioning method — nearly a century in development — whose time has finally come. Joseph Pilates’ original principles were absolutely sound, yet his wife, Clara, referred to her husband’s original work as “just the tip of the iceberg.” The development and evolution of the Pilates method over the last 35 years has been, in large part, the result of the work and vision of Ron Fletcher, their protégé and student for nearly three decades. Since Joseph PIlates’ death in 1968, no other individual has played a more pivotal role in the evolution and popularity of the Pilates method. Now in his eighties, Mr. Fletcher is one of only three such masters still teaching the Work. Should you have any questions regarding the enclosed information, or should you wish to pursue a related project, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition to being one of the great luminaries of the Pilates world, Ron Fletcher is also very much alive, well and active… and he’s a great interview. Sincerely, Kyria Sabin encl The Ron Fletcher Company™ . POB 64971 . Tucson, AZ 85728-4971 . 520.323.7070 .

This transcript has been edited by the interviewee and thus differs in places from the recording. CB: How did you first become interested in theatre? FG: I suppose through [act]ing at school, but in terms of any serious theatre going I suppose it goes back to the late 1940’s... interestingly enough, when I re-looked at the [programmes] that I have got, the first play that I saw [in] the West End was most unusual for the late 1940’s, it was a play called Anna Lucasta,an American play; what was unusual for the 1940s was that it was an all black cast. CB: Really… FG: And it was about a prostitute and my parents took me [laughs] and I think they must have been slightly worried because I was fourteen at the time and it was one of my first experiences. But that was not typical of the first sort of phase of my theatre-going between that moment in 1949 and about 1951 I suppose and [after where] something dramatic begins to happen, I think.
