Popp oster N ighttime . Smith In Memory of For two decades, Mike Douglas’ name became synonymous with entertainment in America. Said to be an outgrowth of the ‘50’s mentality of politeness, Mike hosted ‘the prototype of all future talk shows’ that became “an oasis of kindness, taking the viewer away from some of the turmoils of life”.

“Mike Douglas helped define the daytime talk show genre. The way he talked to his guests made you feel like you were all just hanging out together. And he could really rock a turtleneck.” — Ellen DeGeneres

“Many years ago, when I was just starting out on “The Today Show,” Mike Douglas invited me to appear on his highly successful program, which originated out of . I was very serious in those days and not very well known. Mike actually helped give me a personality, because he asked me to be part of a tumbling act. I did a summersault, and he caught me. I will always remember how kind and supportive he was. Mike was that way for so many. He brought out the best in “Mike Douglas was the leader of this whole daytime us. He made us look good, and funny and charming. His was talk show movement. He really paved the way the original talk show, and who came after him are in for all of the other daytime talk show hosts who his debt. I no longer do summersaults, but I still flip for Mike followed, and he did it all from , Ohio. He was a very sweet guy who had a marvelous way Douglas.” — with guests.” —

“The Mike Douglas Show” was a program for everybody and it was the prototype for all future talk shows. Mike was a terrific host; he was the square guy, yet he also was the hip guy and he was just an all around entertainer that everybody watched. I made my first national talk show appearance on Mike’s show and it brought my career to a whole new level.

The show was not your typical daytime talk show where everyone’s afraid to rock the boat. It hosted the biggest celebrities, musicians and newsmakers, like Martin Luther King, who some thought was a controversial booking at the time, as well as and , who guest hosted for a week, and it was the only talk show that ever did.

“The Mike Douglas Show” was the show America watched in the afternoon and Mike Douglas was a pioneer. —

“When I came up with the idea for the 1st talk-, all I needed was a host who could sing with John Lennon, do comedy with , box with , interview Bobby Kennedy and get hit in the face with a pie by — all on the same show. That’s when I found Mike Douglas and it changed our lives forever.” — Woody Fraser Creator & Executive Producer, “The Mike Douglas Show” 1960-66 – 1972-75

“When you saw Mike Douglas smile, you would see what is in Mike Douglas’ personality.” —

“When I had the Rosie O’Donnell show, one of my inspirations was the Mike Douglas Show. To me, as a kid growing up on Long Island, his show was my first exposure to this kind of entertainment. On those occasions when I stayed home from school I loved watching his show. His passion for popular culture fueled mine. I don’t have a personal anecdote about Mike Douglas be cause I never had the opportunity to meet him. But all I can say is: thank you for being a great role model and a great human being.” — Rosie O’Donnell
