Rt Hon MP Home Affairs Committee Committee Office, House of Commons London SW1A 0AA

Dear Yvette, 01 May 2019

Thank you for your letter of 23 April.

The Serious Violence Taskforce was established in April 2018 to oversee and provide ex- ternal challenge to the delivery of the Serious Violence Strategy. The Taskforce has proven be to a very important forum that brings together Ministers from key departments, MPs, law enforcement, public and voluntary sector partners, committed to combatting the threat of serious violence.

Discussions have been instrumental in the development of a number of initiatives. Most notably the £200 million Youth Endowment Fund, the consultation on a new duty to sup- port a ‘public health’ approach to serious violence, and Review of Drugs Misuse. Most recently, together with my separate meeting with senior police officers in March, the Taskforce also helped with the case to secure additional funding of £100 million to tackle serious violence. Discussions at the Taskforce have also played an influential role in supporting critical changes in community guidelines on serious violent content online.

The Serious Violence Taskforce is England and Wales wide in its remit. This is reflected in its membership. You referred to the Taskforce being described as “London centric”. I would refute that suggestion. The Taskforce has taken a significant interest in London, but the capital accounts for around 35% of all knife crime in England and Wales, and so it is right that we take a strong interest. However, the Taskforce is very much national in its scope. We have had detailed discussions about multi-agency working in Wales, and deep dives into violent crime issues in Birmingham and Blackpool. The Taskforce will continue to look at challenges in other cities at future meetings.

The Serious Violence Taskforce has so far met on nine occasions and I would expect it to continue to meet with this frequency. It is essential though that the discussions in the Taskforce are confidential, the minutes of Taskforce meetings are not published or circu- lated widely, so that members are able to speak freely. Therefore, I must decline your re- quest to see them. However, I am happy to share with you the agendas for all Serious Vi- olence Taskforce meetings that have taken place since the first meeting on 26 April 2018.

I have attached the following as annexes to this letter: the Taskforce membership; the at- tendees at each meeting; and the agendas for each meeting.

Yours sincerely,

Rt Hon MP Serious Violence Taskforce Membership
