The challenge now is to build on this Punishment and Reform Ideas 630 Sadiq Khan MP Edited by Fabian legacy and further reduce crime, but within the tough spending constraints imposed by straitened times. To inform the conclusions of the Labour Party policy review, Sadiq Khan MP brings together a group of experts from across the criminal justice field to investigate reform. Since October 2010 he has been the Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice. He has previ - ously been a Minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government and Minister of State for Transport. Before becoming an MP he was one of the country’s leading solicitors and an elected councillor in Wandsworth for 12 years. He is a former Chair of the Fabian Society and a member of the Fabian Executive Committee. Lord Victor Adebowale has been Chief Executive of Turning Point since 2001 and has more than 25 years experience in the health, social care and housing sector. In 2000, Victor was awarded the CBE for services to the New Deal, the unemployed and homeless young people. He was appointed as a cross bench peer in 2001. Baroness Jean Corston was Labour MP for Bristol East until 2005. As an MP, she was the first woman elected to chair the Parliamentary Labour Party. Her review into vulnera - ble women in the criminal justice system was published in March 2007 and outlines "the need for a distinct radi - cally different, visibly-led, strategic, proportionate, holis - tic, woman-centred, integrated approach". Shauneen Lambe is the Director of Just for Kids Law. She is an attorney in Louisiana and a barrister in UK. She start - ed her career working for Clive Stafford Smith represent - ing people facing the death penalty in the USA. In 1999 v she helped establish the charity Reprieve. In 2006 she set up Just for Kids Law providing support, advice and rep - resentation to young people in London. Paul McDowell is Chief Executive of Nacro, the leading crime reduction charity in England and Wales. He previ - ously enjoyed a 20 year career in the Prison Service culmi - nating in spells as Governor of HMP Coldingley and then HMP Brixton. He also spent a year seconded to the Home Office working in the Prison Minister’s Private Office. Kevin McGrath is Senior Adviser to F&C REIT Asset Management. He is Chair of the McGrath Charitable Trust; Trustee of Howard League for Penal reform; The Clink Restaurant Charity; The National Education Trust; and The WAVE Trust. He is an Ambassador for the Make Justice Work Charity and served as an Commissioner on the Independent Commission on English Prisons Today. Barry Mizen and his wife Margaret, together with the rest of their family, set up the Jimmy Mizen Foundation fol - lowing the murder of their son in May 2008. The founda - tion works to promote the good in young people. One strand of this is called the Awareness Project and much of their time is now spent visiting schools and prisons. Previously she had served for 12 years in the Probation Service. His most recent books are: 'Law and Order: An Honest Citizen's Guide to Crime and Control' (Polity Press 2007); 'The Politics of the Police' 4th.ed. (Oxford University Press 2010); 'Policing, Popular Culture and Political Economy: Towards a Social Democratic Criminology' (Ashgate 2011). Professor Julian V Roberts is Professor of Criminology in the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford. He is Editor of the European Journal of Criminology and has been a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Justice Canada, a Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and Visiting International Professor, Faculty of Law, Université Libre de Bruxelles. Matthew Ryder QC specialises in complex crime and its inter - play with civil law, including judicial review, police law, and claims under the Human Rights Act. He sits as a Crown Court Recorder and was one of only three Silks appointed in 2010 with expertise in both civil and criminal law. Lord Norman Warner is a Labour member of the House of Lords. He was Senior Policy Adviser to Jack Straw when he was the Home Secretary from 1997 to 2001. He was a member of the Dilnot Commission on funding of care and support. He was the first Chair of the Youth Justice Board and was a Minister of State at the Department of Health from the summer of 2003 until December 2006. Phil Wheatley CB is a former Director-General of the National Offender Management Service and before that he was Director-General of HM Prison Service where he was the first Director-General to have previously been a prison officer. ABSTRACT The thesis argues that the most distinctive feature of the Labour Church was Theological Socialism. For its founder, John Trevor, Theological Socialism was the literal Religion of Socialism, a post-Christian prophecy announcing the dawn of a new utopian era explained in terms of the Kingdom of God on earth; for members of the Labour Church, who are referred to throughout the thesis as Theological Socialists, Theological Socialism was an inclusive message about God working through the Labour movement.     Appendix 2 London Assembly Mayor’s Question Time – Thursday 18 July 2019 Transcript of Item 5 – Questions to the Mayor 2019/14512 - “Shocking... horrifying... slow”: the Government’s response to removing flammable cladding post-Grenfell Andrew Dismore AM In a recent interview with the Evening Standard, London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton described the Government’s action on building fire safety since the Grenfell Tower fire as “shocking... horrifying... slow” (Evening Standard, 4 July 2019) and warned that Londoners are at risk because of aluminium composite material on high rise blocks. LFC Cotton continued: “I don’t think anyone in government has responded in a satisfactory manner. We need more to be done. We need for it to be taken seriously.” Do you agree with her appraisal? Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London): I fully agree with London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton [QFSM] that the Government has failed to do anywhere near enough on building fire safety since the fire at Grenfell Tower. Today, the cross-party Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee published a damning report, which agrees that the Government has been - and I quote - “far too slow to react” to the Grenfell Tower tragedy. After the devastating fire in June 2017, the Government promised urgent action to make everyone safe. More than two years later, our building regulation system is still unfit for purpose, we still lack clarity on the basic questions of whether certain types of cladding are safe, and tens of thousands of people continue to live in homes that may be unsafe, with leaseholders facing huge bills for interim safety measures and other safety works.

    Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP Chancellor of the Exchequer HM Treasury 1 Horse Guards Road London SW1A 2HQ Date: 19 November 2020 Dear Chancellor, As our country battles through the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are doing everything within our power to stop the spread of the virus and protect the people we represent from the economic and social impacts of this cruel disease – the consequences of which will be felt for years to come. Covid-19 and the necessary national restrictions have presented the most unforeseen challenges to many people and businesses across the UK. We welcomed the emergency financial support the Government provided throughout this crisis, including the recent furlough extension and additional support for the self-employed. Yet despite this there remain, according to the National Audit Office, a staggering 2.9 million people who are simply not eligible for the Covid-19 financial support schemes. This is an intolerable position for these businesses and individuals to still be in. After eight months without support many are facing continued financial hardship through no fault of their own and huge uncertainty ahead – their incomes have dried up but they can’t access the financial support they desperately need. Once these businesses are gone – they are likely to be gone for good. That is why we are asking you to urgently address their situation in the Spending Review next week. Specifically, we are calling on you to: • Rectify the significant gaps in the self-employed scheme that leaves out the newly self- employed, those who pay themselves in dividends, those earning a mix of PAYE and self-employed income, freelancers, some sole traders, those denied furlough and businesses who have missed out on support.

He is Chairman and CEO of HEAD (the global sporting goods group), Chairman of Aman Resorts, Equity Partners, London Films, Co-Chairman of Cool Earth, non-executive Chairman of Investcorp Europe, non-executive director of CV Starr Underwriting Agents. He is an advisory board member of Brasilinvest, Societe du Louvre, Capstar, the Centre for Social Justice, Stockholm Resilience Centre, Foundation for Renewable Energy and Environment and a member of the Mayor of London’s, Rome’s and Jerusalem’s International Business Advisory Councils. He is Patron of Stockholm University and a trustee of the Kew Foundation. He is the Chair of the Food, Energy and Water security program at RUSI. He is the Founder of the Rainforest Trust which is conserving 400,000 acres of rainforest in the Amazonas. He was part of the Conservative shadow foreign office team as special advisor on European affairs (1999-2003) and responsible for foreign relations (2003-2005). He was Conservative deputy party treasurer (2003- 2007). He is the former Special Representative of the Prime Minister of the UK for Deforestation and Clean Energy (2007-2010).
