n times of natural calamities, the Indian Army has been in the forefront of all rescue and relief work and has always been Ithe first responder. Due to heavy rain from 30 Nov 2015, lakes and tanks began overflowing and even breached, drowning streets and houses along their course in Chennai and areas of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu. On 01 Dec 2015 at 1800 hrs the Indian Army launched a massive rescue operation on war footing across the marooned areas of Tambaram, Mudichur, Urapakkam, Velachery, Kotturpuram, Guindy, T Nagar, Manali, Semmanjeri, Perungudi and several other locations in Chennai. TAMIL NADU Upholding the ethos of selfless devotion to service, Rescue & Relief Operation was launched and all ranks worked unflinchingly round the clock to extricate those marooned by the flood waters in Chennai and adjacent areas. They provided succor and solace when it was neither possible nor practical to ascertain the identity of the beleaguered people. 24x 7 control room was set up at HQ Dakshin Bharat Area to coordinate the rescue ops and to address the SOS calls. In this humanitarian crisis, inspite of own losses, Army columns worked tirelessly through extremely difficult conditions and an information void.

In conjunction with the state administration, NDRF, Navy and Air Force, the Indian Army was also involved in the provision of basic A amenities to the citizens including distribution of relief materials. Water and food packets assumed significance as the flood waters rose unabated in the region.

Indian Army has once again proven its mettle and justified its place in public perception as the failsafe organization in the country and the dedication and commitment of our soldiers has come in for praise and renewed the faith of the Nation in the Indian Army. ijay Diwas is commemorated every year on 16 December in India as it marks its Vmilitary victory during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The end of the war also resulted in the unilateral and unconditional surrender of the and subsequent secession of into . On this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered to the allied forces consisting of Indian Army and , led by General , of India in the Ramna Race Course(now Suhrawardy Udyan) in after their defeat in the war. The anniversary of Vijay Divas is observed across India by paying tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation. In the nation’s capital New Delhi, the Defence Minister Mr Manohar Parikar and the three Service Chiefs paid homage at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate.

Serving and Retired Army personnel across the country at various military stations laid wreath and paid tributes to the fallen fellow soldiers of the 1971 operations on the occasion of Vijay Diwas 2015.

ijay Diwas celebrations at Fort William, assume a special significance as Mukti Jodhas from Bangladesh & Indian war veterans who fought shoulder to shoulder reunite to celebrate Vthis momentous occasion in history. This year 30 Mukti Jodhas attended the solemn occasion led by HE Md Qamrul Islam, Food Minister, Bangladesh. The Mukti Jodhas have been coming to attend the annual celebrations for the last nine years. A plethora of events like display, cultural programme were conducted from 13-15 Dec 2015.

A memorial service for martyrs of 1971 War was held at Vijay Smarak, Fort William on 16 December 2015. Wreaths were laid by Lt Gen , AVSM, VSM GOC-in-C Eastern Command, delegation leader HE Md Qamrul Islam, Food Minister, Bangladesh and own 1971 war veterans, members of the Bangladeshi mil delegation and Mukti Joddhas and representatives of the three services. This dignified ceremony was followed by an enthralling Horse Show, Sky Diving by 12 SF, Slithering by 2 Naga , a Polo Match by a team from ASC Centre and a band display at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. The entire programme was witnessed by HE Mr Keshrinath Tripathi, Governor of who later felicitated the participants.

Baatcheet December 2015 7 IN focus 88TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY OF MILITARY COLLEGE OF EME Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble graced the 88th Convocation Ceremony of Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad on 20 Dec 2015. It was a rare honour for the officers of the 96th Degree Engineering (DE) & 24th Technical Entry Scheme (TES) course to receive their awards from the President. Shri Pranab Mukherjee is the third President to visit MCEME since its raising. However, this is the first time when the President was the Chief Guest for the Convocation Ceremony. The Ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries including Shri ESL Narasimhan, Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana and many other senior Army and Civilian Officers.

COAS REVIEWS THE PASSING OUT PARADE AT IMA, DEHRADUN Gen Dalbir Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC Chief of Army Staff reviewed the Passing Out Parade at IMA, Dehradun wherein 519 Gentleman of 137 Regular and 120 Technical Graduate Courses of IMA, including 50 Foreign Gentleman Cadets passed out on 12 Dec 2015. The Gentleman Cadets displayed tremendous enthusiasm, vigour and zeal, putting up an excellent show, marching to the tunes of ‘Col Bogey’ and ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha’ with pride and élan. The Chief of Army Staff Banner was presented to Hajipir Company.

coas PRESENTs cOLOURS Gen Dalbir Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC Chief of Army Staff presented the Colours or ‘Nishan’ as popularly known in the Army, to two newly raised Infantry Battalions, 23 GRENADIERS and 24 GRENADIERS, during an impeccable Colour Presentation Parade held at Regimental Centre, Jabalpur on 10 Dec 2015.The GRENADIERS is one of the oldest and biggest of Infantry with a large number of Gallantry Awards. The Regiment has won Five before independence and Three Param and Two Ashok Chakra, post independence.

United Nations Medal Parade at Congo (DRC) UN unit citation for the year 2015 has been awarded to PARA BN group for their sterling performance in peacekeeping operations.This award reiterates that the professionalism and dynamism of IndianArmy is not only recognised within the country, but also abroad.

8 Baatcheet December 2015 Snippets DEFCOM 2015 SEMINAR Corps of Signals, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised DEFCOM 2015 seminar from 23-24 November 2015 at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. The seminar was inaugurated with keynote address by Lt Gen Nitin Kohli, AVSM, VSM, SO-in-C and Commandant Corps of Signals. Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Manohar Parrikar released DEFCOM India Journal, a publication on Defence Information and Communication Technology (ICT), as well as inaugurated the DEFCOM exhibition put up by the Industry dealing with Defence ICT. Gen Dalbir Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, COAS, Lt Gen MMS Rai, AVSM, VSM, VCOAS and a large gathering from Defence, Academia, R&D organisations and Industry graced the Seminar.

ORAL HEALTH PROPAGATION BY CMDC (WC) Oral health exhibition and blood donation camp was organised at CMDC(WC) as part of platinum jubilee celebration of Army Dental Corps. The camp was inaugurated by Lt Gen KJ Singh, AVSM*, GOC-in-C in presence of many serving officers, veterans and their families. A total of 27 units of blood was donated by the personnel of CMDC(WC). During the exhibition educational posters and audio visuals were displayed on various dental health issues for benefit of the clientele at large.

HOISTING OF NATIONAL FLAG AT ‘THE RIDGE’, SHIMLA The Indian Flag was hoisted with full honours on a newly installed 100 feet flag mast at ‘The Ridge’, Shimla by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himanchal Pradesh Shri Singh on 17 Dec 15 as part of the celebrations of the Vijay Diwas. The Ceremony was attended by Lt Gen PM Hariz, GOC-in-C ARTRAC, Military personnel and Civil dignitaries. The ceremony was followed by a band display by the Army Brass band and massed Pipe band.

WORLD DISABILITY DAY CELEBRATIONS AT PRC Globally 03 Dec every year is celebrated as World Disability Day. Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) and Queens Mary Technical Institute(QMTI), Kirkee, celebrated the day as “INSPIRATIONAL DAY” on 03 Dec 15. Lt Gen AK Nagpal, VSM, Director and Comdt, AFMC, was the Chief Guest. Maj Gen VK Sinha, VSM Comdt MH(CTC), Maj Gen Ajay Anand, SM , Chief Engineer HQ Southern Comd and other senior officers attended the event. A culturally rich entertainment program was presented by disabled soldiers, children of Asha School and “Music Magic” orchestra. The event was followed by high tea and lunch. Baatcheet December 2015 9 J&KJamm andu Nor& Kashmirth eas tD DIARYIARY CITIZENS’ PARK AT TATTOO GROUND, SRINAGAR In continuation of its efforts to foster better civil military relations for the Awam of Srinagar, the Chinar Corps agreed to the proposal of CM, J&K to jointly develop a Citizens’ Park over 17.5 Acres in Tattoo Ground Garrison, Srinagar which would be open to both, the Army and Awam. On 03 Nov 2015, in a function organized by 152 AD Regt under the aegis of Chinar Corps AD Bde, Mr Mufti Mohammad Sayed, CM, J&K unveiled the Foundation Stone of the ibid park in presence of Chinar Corps Commander, Lt Gen Satish Dua and Ms Mehbooba Mufti, MP and President PDP. The park is expected to be inaugurated in May 2016.

EYE CAMP AT RAJOURI An Eye camp was organized at 150 General Hospital Rajouri under the aegis of Ace of Spade from 09 to 10 Dec 2015. The screening camp was held at Degwar village, Poonch on 14 Nov 2015, with assistance from Pritam Spiritual Trust Poonch. A total of 51 eye patients of all age groups with various eye ailments were treated, out of which, 25 patients having cataract were operated at 150 General Hospital Rajouri, using the latest stitch less technique of Phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens which was implanted free of cost. The highlight of the event was the successful surgery of a17 yrs old with congenital cataract in both eyes regaining his vision.

OP SADHBHAVANA– A ceremony was organised by Chushul Bde under the ageis of Trishul Div at Chushul village on 15 Dec 2015 on the occasion of Lossar. The aim of the function was to address the basic needs of the Reeboos during winter. During the ceremony Amenity Items and Solar Lanterns were distributed, this was attended by Nambardar and Sarpanch of village alongwith other Reeboos of the area. This effort of army was well received by the locals and they expressed their gratitude towards army’s effort.

INTER VILLAGE ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT In pursuit of the vision of OPERATION SADBHAVANA, the Indian Army organised Inter Village Ice Hockey Tournament at Tangtse. As part of the initiatives to encourage local talent in sports, Late Lady Stanzin Odzes Memorial Inter Village Ice Hockey Tournament was organised from 22 to 28 Dec 2015 at Chushul Brigade under the ageis of Trishul Division. The tournament was conducted with active involvement of the local ‘Lalok Sports Association’. The tournament saw the participation of 09 Ice Hockey Teams of the local villages/schools. The sports being enormously popular, the locals in huge numbers thronged the venue to cheer for their favourite teams. 10 Baatcheet December 2015 J&K aNornd tNorh eastht eas diaryt DIARY TRI-SERVICE COMMANDERS’-IN- CHIEF CONFERENCE A Tri-Service Commanders’-in-Chief Conference was held at Air Force Station from 09 Dec 15 to 11 Dec 15. The conference was attended by heads of IAF, Navy and Army, Eastern Command and was chaired by Air Marshal C Hari Kumar VM VSM Air Officer Commanding-in- Chief, Eastern Air Command. The aim of the Conference was to establish a high degree of co-ordination among the higher echelons of three services.

BORDER PERSONNEL MEETING (BPM) A ceremonial Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) with on the occasion of New Year 2016 was held at the Chinese hut at Damai of Zayu Garrison in Chengdu Province, China. This time the meeting was marked by a novelty. After paying respect to the National Flags and playing of National Anthems, the Chinese soldiers surprised and enthralled the audience by their performances. The meet fostered the feelings of friendship and commitment towards enhancing the existing cordial relations and maintenance of peace along the LAC.

ASSAM RIFLES SAVES PRECIOUS LIVES IN PHEK DISTRICT In an ill fated accident, a minibus carrying 21 persons (including 4 children and ladies) which was coming from Ketsopumi village to Phek, fell down into a 30 feet gorge on 23 Dec 15. On receiving the information AssamRifle unit at Phek came into action and a team of one doctor, nursing staff and 45 soldiers reached the accident site and evacuated the critically injured persons. The unit also provided an ambulance to evacuate the critically injured persons to Kohima. The timely action of Rifles saved precious lives. KAMENG TRAVERSE An Off Road Bicycle Expedition named “KAMENG TRAVERSE” was conducted from border areas of Tawang to Rupa in High Altitude Area of to commemorate the 258th Raising Day and Victory of Battle of Garibpur by 14 (NABHA AKAL), where unit proved its mettle in Bangladesh in 1971 war. Under the aegis of Ball of Fire Division the Off Road Bicycle Expedition comprising of one Officer, one JCO and 13 OR travelled a total distance of 530 Kms in the rugged High Altitude terrain of Kameng for 16 days. The expedition was flagged in by GOC of Ball of Fire Division on 21 Nov 2015. Baatcheet December 2015 11 AWWA SRI LANKAN YOUTH DELEGATION VISITS ARMY HOUSE Sri Lankan youth delegation visited India from 05 Dec 2015 to 13 Dec 2015. Mrs Shirani Ambanpola W/o Maj Gen Mahinda Ambanpola, Deputy Chief of Staff Sri Lankan Army was the head of the visiting delegation. During the visit, the delegation which comprised of 22 school children and 5 ladies, visited places of historical importance in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. The tour also had 10 students from various Army Public Schools of India. The delegation was hosted in Army House by Gen Dalbir Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, COAS and Mrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA. The COAS in his talk to the students touched upon the strong bonding between Mrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA the two countries and the rapid development of after the interacting with the Sri Lankan youth peace process. The students were presented a memento and a delegation at Army House on 13 Dec medallion by the COAS thereafter. 2015.

PRERNA CANCER SUPPORT GROUP Mrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA visited Prerna Cancer Support Group in R&R hospital on 21 Dec 2015. The Prerna Cancer Support Group was launched in the year 2002. The group comprises of volunteer ladies who help in counseling the Cancer Patients, their well wishers and care takers. The President AWWA interacted with the patients and was later briefed on the treatment and assistance being provided. She was pleased to see the improvements carried out in the last few months and presented a cheque of Rs 1.5 lacs to Prerna Cancer Support Group. Thereafter, President AWWA distributed sweets and conveyed her best wishes for Christmas Mrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA interacting and New Year 2016 to all the Patients of Oncology ward. with a child at Prerna Cancer Support Group in She also wished them all the very best for their speedy R&R on 21 Dec 2015. recovery.

SELF DEFENCE COURSE ORGANISED FOR LADIES AT NAGROTA A one week course on “Self Defence” for ladies and young girls was conducted as a welfare measure by White Knight Corps in Nagrota Military Station wef 01 to 07 Dec 2015. The course received huge response and was attended by wives of 40 officers, 170 JCOs and OR and 300 young girls. Mr. Sujit Singh who is a “National Refree” and “National Instructor” of taekwondo imparted training during the course. He is presently the “Secy Gen of Taekwondo Association” and has been associated with the training of many and other Celebraties at Mumbai. Speaking on this ocassion, Mrs Sheela Nimbholkar, Zonal President, AWWA laid down stress on the importance of “Self Defence Training” for ladies and girls. She also appreciated the Instructors imparting training to young girls efforts of both instructiors Mr. Sujit Singh and Miss Priti during the self defence course conducted at Avhad. Nagrota Military Station on 07 Dec 2015.

12 Baatcheet December 2015 Sports & Adventure activities 2ND INTERNATIONAL WHEEL CHAIR BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP In an exemplary act of perseverance, the team of paraplegic Army personnel from the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), Kirkee representing the state of Maharashtra, retained the National Wheelchair Basketball championship for the 2nd consecutive year. Nine wheel chair Basketball teams from various states of India championship participated under the aegis of Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India (WBFI) at New Delhi from 02 - 06 Dec 2015. The PRC team beat tough competitor Punjab in the final match with a score of 45-36. The team received trophy from Shri Thaawar Chand Gehlot, Hon’ble Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment.

DESERT STORM MOTORCYCLE EXPEDITION A Desert Storm motorcycle expedition was undertaken by 268 Engr Br Regt which was flagged-off from Bathinda on 19 Nov 2015 on the occasion of 235th Corps day of the Corps of Engrs. The brave SARVATRA riders tamed 1900 km of the stubborn desert in merely 13 days. The expedition team consisting of two officers and 10 OR rode the motor cycles through harsh desert trn along Ganganagar, Khajuwala, Bikaner, Nagaur and Sambhar Lake before arriving at the Pink City where the expedition was flagged in by Maj Gen Sanjay Agrawal, Chief Engineer South Western Comd at the Prerna Sthal, Comd HQ, SWC.

CYCLE EXPEDITIOn To commemorate the 13th Reunion of Regiment of Artillery & 50th Raising Day Celebration of 194 Field Regiment, the unit conducted a cycle expedition from 16 Nov 2015 to 02 Dec 2015 under the aegis of Amogh Artillery Brigade. The Sapta Shakti Parikrama covered a distance of 868 kms over a period of 17 days through the regions of South Western Command testing the team for endurance and skills. The cycling team comprised of One Offr, One JCO & Eight OR. The team conducted lectures in local schools and colleges with the aim to reach out to the youth to motivate them to join Indian Army and also to spread awareness about “Go Green Go Cycling” and Swachha Bharat mission.

CYCLe & KAYAK EXPEDITION Shahbaaz Division celebrated its Golden Jubilee on 18 Sep 2015 commemorating 50 years of its raising. In addition to the memorial service organized at Shahbaaz War memorial to pay homage to its martyrs, release of first day cover & Coffee Table book; a cycling & a kayaking expedition were flagged off from Saugor on 18 Sep 15.The cycling expedition covered a distance of 3355 Kms covering the route from Saugor- Kota- Ajmer- Jodhpur- Jaiselmer- Gadra Rd- Lakhpat. The Kayaking expedition was undertaken by a team of one offr, one JCO& 17 OR of the formation in Kori Creek covering a distance of 157 Kms.
