INDIAN MILITARY ACADEMY (IMA)

• The (IMA) trains officers for the . • It is located in , . It was established in 1932. • It was recommended by a military committee set up under the chairmanship of Philip Chetwode. • On completion of the course at IMA are permanently commissioned into the army as Lieutenants.

• Cadets in IMA are organized into a with four of four companies each. • The Academy mission is to train future military leaders of the Indian Army, goes hand in hand with the character building enshrined in the IMA honour code and warrior code and motto.

TRAINING IN IMA: • Technical graduates, ex-NDA, ex-ACC and university entry cadets undergo training at IMA for one year. • Direct entry cadets train for one and a half years while the officers course is three months. • IMA's mission is to train future military leaders of the Indian Army. • Physical training, drills, weapons training and leadership development form the focus of the training. • Its aim is to train officers physically fit, mentally alert and morally strong.

• Training is broadly categorised into character building, service subjects and academic subjects. Service subjects give basic military knowledge up to the standard required for an infantry platoon commander. • Weapon training includes the close quarter battle range, the location of miss and hit target system, jungle lane shooting and the team battle shooting range. • Games and sports include cross country, hockey, basketball, polo, athletics, football, aquatics, volleyball and boxing in the academy. There is also an annual sports meet with other military academies in . Adventure activities undertaken at the Academy include trekking, cycling, and rock climbing.

PASSING OUT PARADE OF IMA:

• One of the most well known traditions in the IMA is the passing out parade (POP).

• IMA has adopted a song penned by for its POPs — Bharat mata teri kasam, tere rakshak rahenge hum • The finale is the antim pag (final step), where cadets take the last step into Chetwode Hall.

• The tradition of cap-flinging during the passing out parade has a long past but it was replaced by the cadets doing celebratory pushups.The passing out also consists of traditions such as presentation of a "Sword of Honour" to the best GC.

OFFICERS TRAINING ACADEMY(OTA):

• The Officers Training Academy (OTA) are training establishments of the Indian Army that train officers for the Short Service Commission (SSC). • The 49-week course at the OTA prepares graduates for all branches of the Army, except for the Army Medical Corps. • It was established in 1963. • The first academy is located in Alandur, a southern neighbourhood of . • A new academy was set up at Gaya in 2011,but was given the go-ahead in December 2019 to be disbanded.

OTA CHENNAI:

• Two Officers Training Schools (OTS) were established in and Madras to train officers for Emergency Commission into the Army. • The process of establishing the schools was begun in September 1962. The Chennai school was inaugurated on 15 January 1963, for nation by and with Ram Singh as its first Commandant. • The Pune school had a short run and was closed in 1964. However, the school in Chennai continued to operate and on 2 February 1965, it obtained the sanction to shift focus to train officers for the Short Service Regular Commission. • On 1 January 1988, the school was renamed as the Officers Training Academy (OTA), on a par with the NDA and IMA.

OTA GAYA:

• OTA Gaya was set up in 2011, • It is located amid an estate in a hilly terrain of Paharpur at Gaya. • But on December 2019, the Defence Ministry gave the go-ahead to shut OTA Gaya due to lack of intake.
