Parliamentary and ministerial career  After serving as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Education Minister John Hayes and then to the Chancellor , he was appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury in September 2012.  He became Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in 2014, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills in 2015 and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in 2016.

Background  A bus driver’s son who became the youngest vice-president of the Chase Manhattan Bank, Javid is one of the most rapidly-promoted men from the 2010 intake.  His focus on devolution has stemmed much from his BIS role where he announced in February 2016 the outcome of the joint consultation on devolving powers to extend Sunday trading hours to local areas.  Speaking in the Devolution and Growth Across Britain debate in June 2015, he spoke enthusiastically about deals being agreed by government saying it was “not simply devolution; it is a revolution in the way is governed” stating the then secretary of state deserved “great credit for the progress already made on this agenda”.  He spoke most recently on the Midland’s Engine during an oral answer on regional growth.  His department steered the Enterprise Act though the House that included provisions to pave the way for better information sharing between local government and the valuation office in regard to business rates.  In his maiden speech in 2010, he called for sound public finances, low and simple taxation and light and flexible regulation and was a member of the socially-conservative . He focused significantly on cutting business red tape whilst at BIS.  In an interview with the Telegraph following the investigation into gangs in , he said some of the values in certain communities were "totally unacceptable in British society” and said the authorities had to "get to the bottom of this”.  Having previously said he would not be afraid of leaving the EU, he finally confirmed that he would be voting to Remain, saying that although the was in many ways a failing project, the cost of leaving would be too high.
