Finally, a special thank you to Lorna, without whom I would never have completed this work. iii ABSTRACT This thesis contributes to the limited knowledge on ticket touting and ticket touts. Building on the previous research, mainly produced before online touting, this work offers new insight into the backgrounds, motivations, experiences and justifications of individuals belonging to the “deviant” world of black market ticket sales. An ethnographic approach was adopted, consisting of participant observation, interviews, and observations in the field. Through the specific method of verstehen (Weber, 1949) the researcher experienced the “pleasure, excitement and fear” of criminality (Ferrell, 1998) to glean and present a more reliable understanding and appreciation of touting than that currently available. This research bridges a key gap in the literature on entrepreneurial deviance, of “crime as work” (Ruggiero, 2000), locating professional ticket touting within the context of both legitimate and illegitimate opportunities that are exploited by entrepreneurs in the “zones of ambiguity” (Hornsby and Hobbs, 1997). By examining the events of the UFC and how music is used, I focussed primarily on three issues that create a multi-layered understanding of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters and the cultivation of identity. First, I examined ideas of identity formation and cultivation. Since each fighter in UFC events enters his fight to a specific, and self-chosen, musical piece, different aspects of identity including race, political views, gender ideologies, and class are outwardly projected to fans and other fighters with the choice of entrance music. This type of musical representation of identity has been discussed (although not always in relation to sports) in works by past scholars (Kun, 2005; Hamera, 2005; Garrett, 2008; Burton, 2010; Mcleod, 2011). Second, after establishing a deeper sense of socio-cultural fighter identity through entrance music, this project examined ideas of nationalism within the UFC. Although traces of nationalism fall within the purview of entrance music and identity, the UFC aids in the nationalistic representations of their fighters by utilizing different tactics of marketing and fighter branding.     Antisemitism: A Study Of Orthodox Jewish Communities In North London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of West London by Maya Flax University of West London Supervisors: Professor Joelle Fanghanel, Professor Karim Murji DECEMBER 2018 1 Abstract Records of antisemitic incidents in the UK have reached an all-time high in the last 3-5 years. I have used antisemitism to mean in this study: any form of hostility or prejudice towards Jews based on their identity. The main objective of this study is to explore a section of the Jewish community, which has been marginalised in research on antisemitism: The Orthodox Jewish community. Being most visible, as identifiable Jews, within the Jewish community, they are also the ones most frequently targeted. Drawing on qualitative data resulting from 28 interviews with Orthodox Jewish individuals as well as five focus groups with key stakeholder, this thesis explored the lived experienced of antisemitism within the Orthodox Jewish community. It investigated the types of antisemitic incidents, the impacts and meaning which participants attached to these incidents, the perceptions of antisemitism, the coping mechanisms which were adopted in order to respond to the climate of antisemitism and the perceptions of agencies which respond to antisemitism. The thesis generated four main findings. First, the pervasive nature of antisemitism and its prevalence within the lives of Orthodox Jews. Second, the awareness that there is a resurgence of antisemitism and that there has been a shift in its manifestation, making it more institutionalised and therefore powerful. Third, that despite the high prevalence rate of incidents among the community, most respondents chose to normalise and accept the victimisation.
