The primary objective of this national program is to strengthen, expand and maintain Community Development Councils (CDCs) as effective entities for economic and social development as well as good governance in Afghanistan. NSP was created in mid-2003 within the framework of the MRRD tostrengthen local governance, ensure socio-economic development and establish CDCs. Indeed, this national program was a good dream and fortune for all villagers.By implementing development projects, villagers could largely rebuild and reconstruct their communities.NSP has made great achievements with support ofpeople, government and international community in various aspects including reconstruction, development and poverty reduction. In addition, NSPcovered almost all parts of the country by implementing development and capacity enhancement projects. The great effort of CDCs is always highly appreciable in implementing development projects. They proved their honesty only for the sake of community development and theirvillagers without any wages and privileges. Nowadays, we proudly admit that for the first time all community-related issues are being solved andmonitored by villagers. NSP facilitates grounds for democracy and strengthens linkages between people and government. NSP caused remarkable transformation in economic development of villagers andbroughtpositive changes in terms of unity and equality in rural areas. Moreover, one of the objectives of NSP was the poverty reduction and meeting villagers’needs which has largely beenachieved. The villagers are now able to make decisions to prioritize their needs and requirements and make an enjoyable and decentlife style for themselves. Creation of good local governance system and giving people the power to take decisions which is demonstrate the role of democracy is another primary achievement of NSP. The NSP has also paved the way forwomen’sparticipation in CDCs and decision making process on community issues andsocial affairs. We can say thatthe MRRD/NSPand villagers’overall activities and accomplishmentsare handled in a democratic process that have a remarkable role in prioritizing the communities’ needs and requirements. According to MRRD provided facts, NSP has so far disbursed AFN 81.4 milliard for implementation of89,389 uplift projects in various sections including agriculture, electricity, water and sanitation, transportation, education, health, etc. The NSP previously committed to reconstructing and developing Afghan rural communities has been replaced with the Citizen’s Charter Program that will cover the urban areas in addition to rural communities of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the focus will be on large projects and the CDCs will be convertedCDC clusters in Citizen’s Charter. It means several CDCs will get together and the projects will promote from one to several villages. The Citizen’s Charter designed to last until 2026 will be implemented in three phases.

  • Cultivating Identity and the Music of Ultimate Fighting
CULIVATING IDENTITY AND THE MUSIC OF ULTIMATE FIGHTING Luke R Davis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Megan Rancier, Advisor Kara Attrep © 2012 Luke R Davis All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Megan Rancier, Advisor In this project, I studied the music used in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events and connect it to greater themes and aspects of social study. By examining the events of the UFC and how music is used, I focussed primarily on three issues that create a multi-layered understanding of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters and the cultivation of identity. First, I examined ideas of identity formation and cultivation. Since each fighter in UFC events enters his fight to a specific, and self-chosen, musical piece, different aspects of identity including race, political views, gender ideologies, and class are outwardly projected to fans and other fighters with the choice of entrance music. This type of musical representation of identity has been discussed (although not always in relation to sports) in works by past scholars (Kun, 2005; Hamera, 2005; Garrett, 2008; Burton, 2010; Mcleod, 2011). Second, after establishing a deeper sense of socio-cultural fighter identity through entrance music, this project examined ideas of nationalism within the UFC. Although traces of nationalism fall within the purview of entrance music and identity, the UFC aids in the nationalistic representations of their fighters by utilizing different tactics of marketing and fighter branding. Lastly, this project built upon the above- mentioned issues of identity and nationality to appropriately discuss aspects of how the UFC attempts to depict fighter character to create a “good vs.

  • Antitrust As Antiracism
ANTITRUST AS ANTIRACISM: ANTITRUST AS A PARTIAL CURE FOR SYSTEMIC RACISM (AND OTHER SYSTEMIC “ISMS”) Joshua P. Davis,* Eric L. Cramer,** Reginald L. Streater, Esq.*** & Mark R. Suter*** SYNOPSIS We usually think of antitrust law as addressing violations of free market norms, not equality norms. The two, however, may be related. Systemic racism (and other systemic “isms”) are about power and its abuse. So is antitrust law. Moreover, antitrust may be able to fill gaps left by antidiscrimination law. In particular, antitrust law can address: (1) entire markets, not just individual firms or discrete actions; (2) power imbalances from differences in capital, not just disparities in compensation; (3) financial allocations between owners and workers, not just between workers; (4) legal violations that shrink total worker pay, and do not just distort its allocation. Antitrust law also relies on centrist free market principles. Those may be less controversial than tackling issues of race directly. To be sure, in part for that reason, antitrust laws are limited. They can at best remedy a small portion of the potential wrongs caused by systemic racism. But antitrust may nevertheless contribute valuably to systemic racial equality. It also may provide a model for how antidiscrimination law might be reframed to make it more effective in that regard. * Professor and Director, Center for Law and Ethics, University of San Francisco School of Law. ** Chairman, Berger Montague PC. *** Associate, Berger Montague PC. I. Introduction We usually think of antitrust law as addressing violations of free market norms, not equality norms. The two, however, may be related. • Demand for the Ultimate Fighting Championship: an Econometric
Journal of Business and Economics, ISSN 2155-7950, USA June 2015, Volume 6, No. 6, pp. 1032-1056 DOI: 10.15341/jbe(2155-7950)/06.06.2015/002 © Academic Star Publishing Company, 2015 http://www.academicstar.us Demand for the Ultimate Fighting Championship: An Econometric Analysis of PPV Buy Rates Richard A. McGowan1, John F. Mahon2 (1. Boston College, MA 02467, USA; 2.University of Maine, ME 04469-5723, USA) Abstract: This study provides a framework by which the UFC can analyze the determinants of its PPV buy rates, a form of direct demand for the UFC. Accurately deriving demand is incredibly important in the UFC’s goal to maximize revenue and further grow the sport and equally as important for promoters, TV and cable networks. Given that the endogenous growth of the UFC has slowed greatly, specific event characteristics have emerged as the primary factors that govern the buy rate. Using a combination of empirical regression analysis and industry expertise, the UFC and promoters and others can more accurately estimate the buy rates of upcoming events. Key words: gaming; sports; econometric analysis JEL codes: C1, M1 In the past fifteen years, the sport of mixed martial arts has grown from no-rules, bareknuckle “human cockfighting” into a highly professional and incredibly popular mainstream sport with millions of fans around the world. Since purchasing its biggest rival in 2007, the Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been undisputedly the largest, best quality and most popular MMA promotion in the world. In 2008, Forbes wrote an article calling it the “Ultimate Cash Machine”, valuing it at $1 billion (Miller Matthew, 2008).

  • Let's Get Ready to Unbundle!
LET’S GET READY TO UNBUNDLE! It’s Time for the UFC to Offer Individual Fights for Purchase Nick Cornor Abstract A bedrock principle of U.S. Copyright law normally dictates that when a person steals your original work of authorship, a court should issue an injunc- tion and require the violator to pay damages. For centuries this principle has sufficed; however, a lack of deep-pocket defendants and continued lobbying efforts by internet service providers have made this principle untenable when applied to illegal online streaming. This is especially true for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts promoter that has seen its live broadcasts pirated over the internet at an alarming rate, thereby threaten- ing the bulk of its revenue. This Comment advocates that the UFC unbundle its current pay- per-view business model in favor of charging market-based prices for each individual fight. The primary benefit of this approach includes increased rev- enue for the UFC by enticing consumers away from illegal online streaming with lower prices. Potential adjacent benefits include reforming fighter com- pensation schemes, incentivizing fighters to promote their own individual fights, easing controversies regarding unionization efforts by the fighters, and providing the UFC with greater marketing data. Therefore, by unbundling its business model, the UFC will ultimately be able to bypass the shortcomings of U.S. Copyright law and take the lead in a digital media landscape already changing at lightning speeds. * J.D., South Texas College of Law Houston; M.A., University of Oklahoma, 2013; B.S. GAUL IV* The Ultimate Fighting Championship (“UFC”) is the premier mixed martial arts (“MMA”) promotion in the world and is the most recent athletic organization to attain a dominant market share that arguably constitutes a monopoly or monopsony. Antitrust law prohibits organizations from restraining trade or intentionally stamping out market place competition to attain or maintain monopoly power. The UFC’s behavior has raised significant concerns about competition in two separate markets: the MMA Promotional Market and Elite MMA Labor Market. While the MMA Promotional Market appears more competitive than it has ever been, the Elite MMA Labor Market has seen significant reductions in competition.
