Travel booklet 2019-20

Introduction GSAL supports the environmental and health benefits of sustainable travel

There are major environmental consequences of so many journeys being made by car, including carbon emissions, poor air quality and noise pollution. 21% of UK greenhouse gas emissions come from transport; reducing our reliance on cars would make a big difference to this.

Some of the benefits associated with sustainable travel to the GSAL campus include:

• Reducing fleet costs and mileage claims • Releasing land formerly used for car parking for more productive purposes • Enhancing accessibility to the site for staff, students, visitors and suppliers • Reducing pressure on parking spaces so they are available to those with most need for them • Tackling congestion, both on and off site • Complying with environmental management systems • Maintaining good relationships with our neighbours • Promoting good health and stress reduction and reducing absenteeism We offer a range of travel options:

Walking and cycling

Pupils living in close proximity to the school are encouraged to walk or cycle to school For those living within a radius of 1.5 miles, pupils may access the school along Manor House Lane in addition to the main drive. Access along Manor House Lane is not permitted to cars. There is a dedicated pedestrian and cycle lane alongside the main drive. Secure cycle storage is available on site.

Cars

Sixth Form drivers

There are NO facilities for Sixth Form drivers to park on site.

Parent parking

Parents must pick up and drop off in the visitors’ car park. Apart from the overflow car park the system is designed so that there is no requirement for anyone to reverse.

Staff parking

Staff may park in the staff car park; a barrier pass is required to access this area.

All traffic leaving site is stopped at 16:08 to permit the buses to depart

Buses

We operate 12 morning and afternoon services together with six late services for Junior School and Senior School pupils. These services cover a radius of up to 30 miles from school to provide transport from most areas of the city and surrounding area.

Please note that bus stops and routes are subject to change, depending on demand.

Free shuttle service(s)

We are able to offer free shuttle service(s) from:

Alwoodley - the bus stop on The Avenue

Moortown Corner – the bus stop opposite Barclays Bank

Slaid Hill – the bus stop at the Dexter on Wigton Lane

Each academic year we require an on-line booking form for everyone using the buses, including the free shuttle services.

Full details of the routes and timetables are in the following pages.

Rose Court

We operate a daily return shuttle bus service from Gates campus to Rose Court for Rose Court pupils. Please contact 0113 274 4000 or [email protected] for bookings and prices.

GSAL school bus services 2019 – 2020

The Grammar School at and GSAL Transport Limited endeavour to accommodate the needs of as many pupils as possible whilst operating an efficient service; the routes are based on experience and the results of previous travel surveys.

Electronic ticketing system The automatic register system requires pupils to simply swipe their card/fob as they board and alight the bus. Senior school pupils use their student ID/Refectory card to swipe on and off the bus and junior school pupils use a bus fob. Fobs will be issued via their class teacher. Along with an automatic register the administration system provides other benefits including:

1. Emergency event reporting We ask you to provide a registered email address on the booking form so that the GSAL transport department can alert you in the event of major delays, road closures, bad weather etc via an email notification service. Please note: only one email address can be used so please supply the most appropriate one to receive the travel information.

2. Faster boarding times The fob system enables faster boarding time compared to visual card inspection by drivers and removes potential mistakes. This helps to reduce the stopping period and disruption to the planned timetable especially in busy traffic.

3. The service GSAL operates 12 daily bus services to and from school and six late bus services. Daily services arrive at school between 08:00 and 08:20 and depart school at 16:10. Late bus services depart at 17:45 to accommodate pupils taking part in after school activities but the routes differ from the 16:10 services.

A guide to the school bus routes, zones, prices and how to book can be found on the following pages. Please familiarise yourself with the route, service and zone applicable to you and then use the pricing table to work out which type of pass best suits your need.

Please fill out the on-line booking and make payment via the Squid payment system. If a student does not have a card (or has lost it), please ask your child to go to their Year Group Administrator and request a new one. Junior School pupils should advise their teacher and a new/replacement fob will be allocated to them.

Please note: 1. If an allocated fob is not used the cost of the journey will be charged at a flat rate of £4.50 fee per journey. 2. Should your son/daughter need to use the bus at short notice due to an emergency, please email [email protected] with the details.

The buses will be easily recognisable by GSAL livery and signage in the windows.
