News Roundup Last updated 21 November 2006

Local Priorities: Our priority as your local policing team continues to be reducing incidents of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour, and investigating such offences as they occur.

West Police have implemented an Autumn initiative on the prevention of burglary dwellings. The aim is to target offenders, visiting known criminals in the area.

We will shortly be launching a campaign to encourage local residents to help us in our continuing fight against crime by telling us who has committed offences against the community. Further details will appear on this website very soon. In the meantime, if you know of anyone who has damaged property in or around your town, or committed any other criminal offences you can speak to us in confidence. The telephone numbers are:

Otley / Pool / Bramhope / Guiseley / Rawdon / Yeadon: 01943 858035

North West Outer news: PCSOs will be visiting unoccupied houses over the next few weeks- how do they know? Its easy- just look for the house in darkness. Now that the clocks have gone back, the evenings are darker and this might mean your house will be in darkness before you even get home from work. Don't make it easy for the burglar or thief - look at the local safety item on this page for some handy hints on prevention of crime. PCSOs will be checking houses in darkness in the area and posting leaflets giving advice on how to make your house look occupied.

Otley News: The NPT have had a few complaints about parking on the pavements where it is impossible for prams or wheelchairs to pass without having to move onto the road. This is classed as an offence of causing an unnecessary obstruction. Please park sensibly and with consideration for other road users (including pedestrians). Officers will be paying particular attention to this problem over the next month and will also be forwarding reports of vehicles parking on double yellow lines to the Council parking attendants. Tickets will be issued where necessary so please be aware. Youths riding bicycles on pavements will also continue to be stopped and advised where appropriate. Details will be recorded and letters sent to parents.

Guiseley News: Netherfield Road continues to be a problem in relation to vehicles being driven in excess of the speed limit. PCSO Milner has been tasked to look into the reports from residents - watch this space!

Yeadon News: Attention will continue to be given to parks in the Guiseley and Yeadon areas. Officers have seen an increase in under age drinking in the area. Alcoho l will be confiscated and disposed of, details of the youths will be taken and letters sent to parents. This information will also be passed onto the Anti-Social Behaviour Liason officer who works in conjunction with the City Council.

Parents - do you know where your son or daughter is during the evening? Where are the teenagers buying the alchohol? If you have any information please contact your local NPT office.

Pool and Bramhope news: PCSO Linda Smith continues to make a good impact in the area. Her next plan of action is to employ the services of SID - the Speed Indication Device in the area. If you are driving at the correct speed, the device will show a smiley face- if not then a sad face is shown. Please drive responsibly - we want to see those smiley faces!

Shop Watch News: If you own/manage a shop in the Otley/Yeadon/Guiseley area then you will be visited by your local PCSO. If you are interested in joining a Shopwatch scheme then contact your PCSOs on the numbers given.

Horsforth News: Over the past four weeks the Horsforth officers have been concentrating their efforts in two main areas. Firstly the residencies around the Newlays and Victorias have been experiencing a higher numbers of burglaries and car crime than usual. The vast majority of crime appears to be committed at about 4am. A few simple measures will reduce this trend though. By ensuring that all doors and windows are locked at night will dramatically reduce your chances of being visited by a burglar. Similarly do not leave any valuables on display in your car. Satellite Navigation systems are being targeted so ensure they are taken out when not in use. That also includes the cradle it fits in to since its presence will make the thief think that you have merely hidden the system in your glove box.

Secondly due to the ever increasing number of bars and subsequently drinkers on Horsforth Town Street a high visual presence is being maintained in and around the area. PCSOs recently detained a group of 8 who were being rowdy whilst making their way from Town Street on to Low Lane. One of the group was subsequently arrested for being drunk and disorderly. It is our aim to reduce the nuisance and annoyance aspects for local residents who for some time now have endured drunken behaviour immediately outside their houses.

Cookridge News: The issue of speeding, especially along Green Lane is one of the main talking points in the area. PCSO Howard is looking to work with the local school and utilise the Speed Indication Device (SID) in order to draw motorists attention to their speed. Crime levels in the area remain low but I would urge residents to report anything they think is suspicious. Remember to keep all doors and windows locked at night. There appears to be two teenagers operating who simply go from house to house in the early hours trying door and window handles. When they find one that is open they subsequently enter and burgle it. Likewise ensure that any Satellite Navigation system as well as its cradle is removed from your vehicle when not in use. These are easy picking for criminals and one of the main reasons why cars in the area are being broken in to. Simple preventative measures will go a long way to reducing crime in the area. Finally Cookridge has a new addition to the NPT team. PCSO Lynsey Gallimore will be working alongside PCSO Howard for the next few months to ‘learn the ropes’ before going out independently. I am sure she will make a positive impact in the area.

Adel News: The issue of speeding is one of the main talking points in the area. Sergeant Perkis has arranged to meet Councillor Barry Anderson and local residents in the near future to discuss possible measures. Until then additional expenditure from the Adel and Wharfdale Ward will enable traffic police officers to work in the problem areas. If you are a local resident who speeds then please think twice. It could be your Ward money that results in you receiving 3 penalty points and a £60 fine! Crime levels in the area remain low but I would urge reside nts to report anything they think is suspicious. Remember to keep all doors and windows locked at night and remove any Satellite Navigation system as well as its cradle from your vehicle when not in use. Finally off road motorcycling has become a problem in the wooded area between Stair Foot Lane and Golf Club. Damage has been caused to one of the greens and those legitimately using the area complain about the noise and associated risks of fast moving motorcycles. The issue is being addressed by Police Off Road motorcyclists who recently seized a motorbike from the owner. To get it back will cost £105 plus £12 for every day it is in storage. If you know someone who rides in the area you may want to warn them about the financial consequences!

Stop Press!!!! Our office recently received some information regarding drug dealing activity in the Tinshill area of Leeds. PS Perkis, three PCs and five PCSOs subsequently executed a search warrant issued under the Misuse of Drugs Act on the address and seized a substantial amount of skunk cannabis. The occupant was arrested and interviewed about the matter. Without the support and confidence of the local community we would not have know about this drug dealing activity. I therefore urge anyone with such information to report it directly to our office or through Crimestoppers.

Local Safety Alert

Keep your PIN safe!

Please be aware that there have been several reports of cloned credit cards within Pudsey/Weetwood area- when keying in your PIN (Personal Identification Number) cover the number with your hand to keep your number safe. If your card is cloned then the thief will not have your number to steal your money.

Seen the Light!

There is no doubt that burglars prefer to operate in the dark. A quick look at the figures show that there is always a rise in house burglaries once the nights start to draw in. The reason for this is quite simple. Not only can thieves move around during the dark evenings without drawing attention to themselves but it is also easy for them to spot the unoccupied house

When the thieves are asked how they got away with it. They will reply, Its easy, just look for the houses in darkness.

Whilst it is not possible to deter all burglars, there is no doubt that if your house or flat looks occupied, many thieves will give it a miss.

The use of a timer switch connected to a lamp can be used effectively to turn on lights in your absence. They can also be used to switch on a radio so that if someone comes up to the house it gives the impression of you being at home. (The Fire Service has advised against leaving televisions on, due to the high voltage and the risk, though slight, of an electrical fire)

Exterior lighting can also act as a deterrent to the would-be thief. If you have an outside light then you could consider fitting a dusk to dawn photosensitive light unit. When used in conjunction with a low energy light bulb it can reduce the operating costs to a minimum.

Insecure doors! There have been a number of burglaries recently, especially in Horsforth, Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon. The most frequent method of entry is through unlocked doors and windows, so we urge residents to make sure their houses are secure. Lock up (doors and windows) when you go to bed and also make sure all your family get into this habit. We particularly recommend that you take your house and car keys upstairs with you. Burglars like to work quickly, quietly and unobtrusively. If you make it hard work for them, they will look elsewhere.

Sat Navs: Once again, Satellite Navigation Systems are finding their way out of the possession of their rightful owners as thieves help themselves to any they can find. When leaving your vehicle, make sure your navigator is locked out of sight or take it with you. Don’t forget to remove the cradle as well, and clean the windscreen to remove the sticker marks.

If you are offered a cheap satellite navigation system, or any other item you believe to be stolen, please contact us with details or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Purse and Bag Snatches Purse theft or bag snatching is a common crime, but the risk of it happening to you can be practically eliminated if you follow this advice:

Purses

• Don’t leave your purse unattended or in open view in your bag. • Keep your wits about you and keep a firm hold on your purse. • Don’t display amounts of cash which might tempt an attacker. • Don’t carry more cash than you really need. • Keep cards and cheque books in a separate safe place. • Don’t carry your pin number along with your card. Bags • Try to use a safer place to carry keys, cards and cheque books. • The safest bags have secure fasteners such as zips. • Carry your bag under your arm. • Keep the side with the fastening closest to your body and not exposed. • Shoulder bags tempt attackers. • Be prepared to give up your bag rather than risk injury. • Purse chains are effective and cheap to buy Morrisons at Yeadon and Guiseley have been targetted by purse dippers- most victims being the elderly. Please be aware of your purse at all times- and if you are shopping keep an eye out for suspicious persons hanging around the vulnerable. If you have any concerns then please inform a shop assistant or contact the police immediately.
