BRAMHOPE & CARLTON VILLAGE NEWSLETTER SPRING 2021

A warm welcome to the new residents of Spring Wood Park. Moving house at any time can be stressful but I'm sure it has had additional complications during lockdown. Hopefully you are now settling into your new homes and, as the restrictions begin to ease towards the summer, you will soon enjoy becoming part of the vibrant community in Bramhope. In welcoming the new residents, I was reminded just how fortunate we are in Bramhope and Carlton. There is so much to enjoy here. Not only do we have easy access to country walks and the Dales, but there are so many activities within the village, many of which you will read about in this Newsletter. Under normal circumstances, Bramhope Village Hall is a hub of activities, ranging from groups for young mums and toddlers to the more sedate art classes and bridge clubs. For the more active there are tennis, bowls and table tennis, not to forget the West Park Rugby Club. The Recreation ground hosts football and cricket matches as well as providing plenty of room for play and dog walking. For younger children there is The Knoll playground. The Women's Institute group known as the Bramhope Rolling Scones meets regularly and during the winter months a Film Club is run at the Methodist Church. St Giles' Church also hosts varied activities. We have a wonderful selection of local shops and businesses, all of which have provided a vital service during lockdown. You will read in the Newsletter of the work undertaken by Bramhope in Bloom who always keep the village looking at its best, and of the tireless efforts of Dementia Friendly Bramhope who have done their best to ensure that those with dementia and their carers have been contacted during lockdown. I know that whether you are a newcomer to the village or long established, you will be made most welcome if you decide to join any of the groups when they reopen. In the meantime, enjoy the Spring flowers as you explore the village. There is so much for all of us to look forward to. Hilary Harris Chair Bramhope & Carlton Parish Council

BRAMHOPE & CARLTON VILLAGE NEWSLETTER – SPRING 2021

PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS IN 2021. At present meetings are held by Zoom under legislation introduced last year that enabled councils to meet remotely rather than in person as required by the 1972 Local Government Act. Agendas are posted in advance, and the public have been able to observe and participate in meetings. It has worked well. It appears that the Government does not intend to renew this legislation beyond 7th May 2021 which poses many challenges for the conduct of business. The Annual Meeting of the Council (the election of Chair and Vice-Chair, Committees and review of policies) will therefore be brought forward to Wednesday 5th May so that it can be held via Zoom. (The public will, of course, be welcome to attend as with all meetings of the Parish Council and its committees). We will then have to hold meetings in person in a safe and socially distanced way that also meets Covid regulations. THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING – POSTPONED The agenda for the 2020 Annual Parish Meeting, scheduled for 20 May, included reports on Parish Council finances, activities in the last year and future plans. It was intended to be the initial forum for consultation with residents on projects funded by CIL money. Because of Covid the meeting was postponed, and the changing regulations and restrictions never allowed it to be held. Currently we are legally bound to hold a meeting before 1st June, yet such a meeting would potentially breach Covid regulations, and residents are unlikely to attend. The Parish Council therefore intends to hold a short meeting on May 5th prior to the Annual Meeting of the Council to approve the 2019 minutes and agree to hold an open parish forum later in the year that would have a similar agenda to the usual Annual Parish Meeting. CLIMATE CHANGE EMERGENCY The Parish Council has joined many other Parish and Town Councils in adopting a formal position on Climate Change. The Parish Council passed a motion at the meeting on 24th March that: Bramhope and Carlton Parish Council recognises that there is a climate emergency. From the date of the adoption of this statement, it is formal council policy to endeavour to take action to mitigate against the climate emergency, within its powers and limitations as a Parish Council. These actions will be consistent with the climate emergency policies and initiatives of City Council. Climate and the environment will be considered in all council decisions. The statement is supported by 24 actions in the areas of: Decision Making, Finance, Buildings and Planning, Transport, Energy, Waste, Land Use, Campaigning, and Influencing Others. Some actions, such as increased tree planting, were already council policy before this statement. A local Climate Action Group would be a valuable support for these actions, but to be effective needs to be community led. If residents wish to establish a group, the Parish Council would support such an initiative by methods such as the Community Grant scheme. PARISH COUNCIL BRIEFING • The Precept is unchanged for the year 2021/22. The Precept appears as an additional item on your Council Tax bill and is the main source of funding for the Parish Council. • A Community Infrastructure Levy Grant has been awarded to Think Like a Pony. The grant will fund a picnic area at Think Like a Pony’s planned horsemanship centre in Bramhope as well as improving the footpath for local walkers. The picnic area will be open to all. • Our Parish Clerk, Nicola Woodward, has qualified for the Certificate for Local Council Administration (CILCA) after a period of intensive study and assignments. Many congratulations. We have already seen benefits from her work in improvements to our policies and procedures. A Parish Council with a CILCA qualified clerk potentially has a wider range of powers of expenditure.

PLANNING MATTERS Millers Spring Wood Park Drainage. 's Flood Risk Management Team will monitor the drainage of the site. The issues concerning the silting of the watercourse downstream from the site appear to have been resolved. Even after heavy rainfall the water ran clear and there were no issues of flooding from the downstream watercourses. Field to the south of Spring Wood. Due to the overall reduction of housing numbers in the Leeds area a modification to the Site Allocation Plan proposes that this field remains in the Green Belt. The Parish Council have informed LCC that they support this proposal. An examination in public with a planning inspector will be held later in the year. Landscaping As part of the restoration work agreed with the Parish Council, LCC have planted thousands of replacement daffodil bulbs in the grass verges by the A660, which are now showing signs of growth. Two rowan trees have been planted in Jubilee Copse to replace the trees removed to accommodate the new Poplars ( bound) bus shelter. Miller Homes have already planted some trees adjacent to the new housing but the overall master landscaping plan and the detailed plot landscape proposals for the site still have to be approved by LCC’s Landscaping Team. As yet no plans have been published for the landscaping of the A660 roundabout. The Parish Council has made suggestions and recommendations for landscaping and will monitor the work. New Parish Council Noticeboard Due to the number of underground utility cables and pipes on the eastern side of the A660 the new board will now be located on the western side of the road in the vicinity of The Poplars pedestrian crossing. Site of Rosemont, Breary Lane Further plans have been submitted for the site as it is proposed that the building will provide nine apartments rather than eight as was originally envisaged. The site is adjacent to the Bramhope Conservation Area on three sides with the Grade II listed Methodist Church by the western boundary. The Parish Council has asked that the boundary planting of trees, shrubs and hedging should be significant in size and maturity to mitigate the negative impact of the car park which will be located at the front of the building. The developers have also proposed solar panels on the south facing section of the roof. This would result in a lowering of the pitch of the roof. Councillor Diane Fox Leeds/ Airport (LBA) Leeds City Council have approved the planning application by LBA for a new terminal building that will be carbon neutral. The application is subject to a long list of conditions, some of which are still being negotiated. The extension of daytime operating hours to 06.00-23.30 has been agreed with a suite of mitigation measures including both day and night time noise contours, a quota cap in the night time, a noise insulation scheme and annual monitoring requirements. The Parish Council made a number of comments on the application, some of which (e.g. landscaping, public transport) are reflected in the conditions. The Parish Council will continue to press for conditions that mitigate the impact on our neighbourhood. The application will be reviewed by the Secretary of State because most of the development is in the Green Belt Park & Ride Station Progress continues to be made by the Combined Authority (WYCA), aiming for the opening of the station at the south end of the Bramhope Tunnel in a timeframe of 2023/24. LBA have increased their contribution to the station costs, including provision of a fleet of electric shuttle buses between station and terminal. ROAD SAFETY Road safety is a continuing concern for residents and the Parish Council. Below you will read about two campaigns with a specific focus. The Parish Council has an ongoing dialogue with Leeds City Council Highways Department and with the Police on known hotspots and issues raised by residents. LCC Highways are always constructive but are often hindered by national regulations and by lack of funding. Covid-19 has had a significant impact on local authority finances resulting in difficult decisions about priorities. An action that all drivers can take is to respect the speed limits and drive with consideration for others. Too often the worst offenders are local residents who should know the risks specific to a stretch of road. Road Safety on Otley Old Road The residents of None Go Bye Farm and St Helena’s Caravan Park are campaigning for a speed limit to be applied to the stretch of Otley Old Road in between the Moor Road / Lane junction and the A658. We are a close community that includes older adults, very young children and primary school age children. This campaign has been sparked by the concerning number of accidents and ‘near misses’ that we witness along the road with alarming regularity. We have recorded a gruesome gallery of photographs taken of accidents that have occurred along our road. As most people living locally will be aware, the national limit of 60 mph applies to this stretch of road. Yet the road descends steeply towards the exits from St Helena's and None Go Bye and the bend obscures a clear line of sight to these junctions. 60 mph does not adequately reflect the risk posed by the road, a 40 mph limit would better reflect the characteristics of the highway. We believe that the government guidance Setting Local Speed Limits backs up this opinion. Currently, we live with this risk daily. We are particularly conscious of the risk posed to ‘vulnerable road users’, essentially pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. We are sure that many of you will have used the footpaths that open on to the road and are likely to have walked short stretches of the road and will have experienced the danger that is posed by people driving at speed. We have been lucky to have been supported in our request for a speed limit by Councillor Billy Flynn, who has put us in touch with one of the senior engineers in the Highways Department at Leeds City Council. We would love to hear from you if you are also interested in this issue and in supporting our campaign. Jasmine Salih [email protected] BRACE The expansion of the primary school has raised concerns about the significant increase in traffic on the narrow roads around the school. Residents have formed a group - BRACE (Bramhope Residents Against Congestion Expansion) with a membership of about 300 residents from all corners of the village. BRACE is working with councillors, Bramhope Parish Council, school governors and local businesses to campaign for an enforceable traffic abatement scheme as part of the expansion plans. This aims to address safety, pollution and congestion issues, as well as access for emergency vehicles, the medical centre, shops and residential properties. In the meantime, they ask all car drivers to consider these issues when choosing how they travel, and if parking is necessary in the streets around the school and medical centre that it is done legally and considerately for other road users and residents. For more information on BRACE, contact: Bill Cunliffe [email protected]

BRAMHOPE PRIMARY SCHOOL EXPANSION Bramhope Primary School wish to expand pupil numbers from 280 to 420 to meet increasing demand for places and Leeds Council agreed at the March meeting of the Executive Board to fund the expansion. While most of the village accept the need for an expansion at the school, hundreds of residents have expressed concern about the likely traffic chaos around the school with a planned 50% increase in capacity over the next few years. Miller Homes provided the land for a new school at their development to the south of the village although there would be planning issues around building on a green belt site. It would, however, resolve the traffic issues around the current site. A new build here could be a straight swap for the current school, partly funded by the sale of the current school and a contribution from the Department for Education. However, the Academy Trust would prefer to expand on site and a new build may not be affordable. Building in situ will demand a comprehensive and enforceable traffic plan with the emphasis on enforcement. It is difficult to see how the school geography on the current site plus the GP surgery can support a significant increase in traffic. Part of the suggested traffic plan is to close off Breary Rise at the rear of the school, which is eminently sensible, but all that will do is push more traffic towards the main entrance and can only exacerbate the current problems. Another suggested “solution” is more yellow lines but that just moves the problem further up the road and annoys someone else. It is absolutely essential that a workable and acceptable traffic plan is produced to address the inevitable increase in traffic around Tredgold Garth, Crescent, Avenue and the surrounding roads before work starts. An enforceable condition to this effect should be added to the funding permission or to the planning permission if required. Councillor Billy Flynn (Councillor Flynn is both a Parish Councillor and a Leeds City Councillor representing Adel & Ward) (Editor's Note. It is unclear whether a planning application will be required for this development. If an application is made, the Parish Council will comment and reflect the views of residents. When planning applications are granted with conditions, the conditions can powerfully influence the development, but need to be established from the start.)

BRAMHOPE VILLAGE VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are still supporting some residents with shopping, picking up prescriptions and helping to settle residents back in at home after hospital stays etc. It’s much quieter than last year for obvious reasons but we still have our network of volunteers ready and willing to help when they are needed! Contact us via Facebook. After hearing the BBC appeal to help children access remote learning, Sue Timme contacted Parklands Primary School at where she had previously run workshops. There were 226 children at the school who did not have access to a device. The government supplied 65 and the school had had donations of a further 65. So, there were still almost 100 children without IT access at home. Bramhope Village Volunteers appealed for donations of IT equipment for the school and were able to donate both second-hand (nine items) and new (twelve) pieces of equipment to the school. Thank you for your amazing generosity. The photo shows Chris Dyson (headteacher) receiving some of the equipment. The difficulties faced by some families and schools during this time with IT access has been extremely challenging. Hopefully we have made some difference. There is still a need for equipment. BRAMHOPE IN BLOOM The fruits of our efforts during the harsh winter and lockdown are beginning to materialise. Snowdrops heralded the oncoming spring and during the last few weeks the tête-à-tête and daffodils are beginning to bloom and primroses and polyanthus are blooming in barrels, troughs and beds. We have been clearing leaves, removing plants decimated by harsh frosts and looking to refurbish some areas amongst other things.

The DOE boys dug out the old herbs from the sensory bed on the Parade, composted and replanted with tete a tete to brighten it up. The herbs will be replaced in April and the daffs will be replanted in the gaps so will not be wasted. Spot the sacks that the boys filled! Clockwise from top left: the banking at the Chapel; one of the cemetery beds, one of the Tredgold beds, a barrel at the Tredgolds, a barrel at the school, Crocus at Wynmore Avenue

We are being judged for In Bloom this year, possibly by photos only in July! No matter what we shall be replanting summer bedding in June and as our aim is sustainability and biodiversity, we shall be looking at incorporating more perennials in various beds. Many thanks for all your words of appreciation and donations.

TEAM BRAMHOPE – Fundraising for charity Quiz Night for Dementia UK and Prostate Cancer UK I had been thinking since the end of 2019 to do something for two new charities: Dementia UK and Prostate Cancer UK. I had hoped to organise GBBO (Great Bramhope Bake Off) but was prevented by Covid restrictions. So I decided to organise a "Virtual" quiz night for both the charities. As in the November quiz Stephen and Margaret Lebeau were the quiz masters for this online event using Zoom and WhatsApp. There were 39 teams and over 230 people took part on the night. Many local businesses were very generous in donating prizes for the quiz and the raffle. These prizes helped us enormously to raise a lot of money for these wonderful charities. We set a target of raising at least £1000 for each charity. And once again, with the huge generosity and kindness of everyone in the village, we have managed to raise over £3700 to be divided equally between both charities. This was the first time that we organised the quiz night for these two new charities and after the huge success this time, I shall try to make this a regular event every spring. A MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who took part, supported, donated and helped me making this a really good, fun evening for good causes. In the 8 years to November 2019, we managed to raise around £12000 from the pub quiz nights every November for BBC Children in Need appeal. But in the last six months the two online, virtual quiz nights have raised over £8000! The Bramhope 10 Mile – Sunday 23rd May After the success of first ever Bramhope 10 mile run last year, I am organising the run again this year. The event is in support of two wonderful cancer charities. Most of the money raised will go to the Candlelighters Trust, and there will be some volunteers joining us fundraising for Imran Khan Cancer Appeal. The event will Tariq briefs the runners before last year's Bramhope 10 Mile Run be on Sunday 23rd May at 10 am. The run starts from The Cross, with two 5 mile laps. If you wish to run a single lap, that is fine. I am hoping to do primary age children's run of 1 mile as well. Older age group children keen to take part could do a 5 miles lap with adults. So if anyone would like to take part and have a wonderful experience of supporting the community and good causes, then please contact me as soon as possible. There were 25 runners last year, so I am aiming for 50 this time. There will be a small registration fee of £10 which to go to the Candlelighters Trust after the event. We are also hoping that every adult runner would raise around £100, and every child runner £10 sponsorship from their friends / families/ work colleagues. The Three Peaks This annual event will be held on either the last Saturday in July or at the beginning of August. Please get in touch if you would like to take part in this truly amazing, unforgettable but demanding challenge to raise money for Candlelighters and the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal. We are delighted to announce that St Giles will reopen on Sunday 4th April, which is Easter Sunday, for its first face to face service since in mid-January and lockdown 3. As we move into the summer, we also hope to resume the giving of communion when it is safe to do so and welcome back our baptism families and wedding couples. Our popular virtual services have continued throughout lockdown, disseminated on our weekly e-mails every Sunday morning. They are also available on the church website, www.stgilesbramhope.org.uk. Prayer meetings have transferred to Zoom on Thursdays at 10.30 am, followed by Healing Prayer Our ecumenical Lent course, in association with the Methodist Church, Get creative in Lent has been held on Zoom every Thursday evening throughout Lent. Participants have been making their way through the passion narrative in Mark’s Gospel and been inspired by Behind the scenes filming a virtual service. Church Wardens these bible stories to write, compose poems, draw or found our missing wheelie bins supporting a monitor! paint. Mother’s Day was marked this year by a delivery of flowers for mothers in the church congregation. A long-held tradition is for posies of daffodils to be handed out at the end of the Mother’s Day service. Many thanks to the flower ladies and all those who made house to house deliveries to bring a bit of Spring Joy to Bramhope. Our pastoral care team continues the good work of calling people who might be on their own during lockdown and welcome a chat. Likewise, the children’s team have been busy doing videos and online activities for the CATS population, Toddler Praise and our online virtual services. The St Giles Church community is now looking forward to “Life after Lockdown” and there have been many discussions as to how we build something even better than before! We are trying to look on the positive side at lockdown experiences which we can carry forward with us. There have been other things we learned that we can now leave behind. Our viewpoint now is to look to what we are going to build on in our post-pandemic world. So, watch this space! One of the positives has been the full installation of Wi-Fi throughout the church during lockdown. We are not quite at the stage of live streaming our services on the internet, but the Wi-Fi provision will help us as we continue to move forward. Unfortunately, we will be saying goodbye to our Vicar, Tom Lusty, as he has been called to a new role, the post of vicar of the parish of Upper Wharfedale & Littondale in the Dales, where there are four Churches at Arncliffe, Hubberholme, Kettlewell and Conistone. We know Tom and his family will miss St Giles and Bramhope, but we wish them well in their move in early June. Tom’s last service will be on Trinity Sunday, May 30th.

TWAM – Tools With A Mission Appeal www.twam.co.uk TWAM is a Christian charity that is making a difference in both the UK and the developing world, while at the same time recycling tools that may otherwise find themselves in landfill. Tools and equipment which are no longer required are picked up from local groups, refurbished, sorted into trades and forwarded as packages to many parts of the world, often accompanied by a tradesperson. OUR CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT: “Together as a Church family we are aspiring to love God, the Community and each other through worship, prayer, learning, service and outreach.”

www.facebook.com/BramhopeMethodist

We are hoping that by the time you read this article the doors of our Church will be open again to welcome you to worship with us! Sadly, other activities will have to wait until government regulations permit. Our Christmas services were different in 2020. A carol service during which we were not allowed to sing presented a challenge, but Deacon Jenny Parnell chose some beautiful choral music for us to listen to and it was a change to sit back, relax and listen to some people who could sing in tune! You may have noticed that we brought the nativity outside with our home-made crib scene constructed from some recycled pallets and miraculously a baby appeared in the crib on Christmas Eve! When the third Lockdown was announced we made the difficult decision to close our doors to services in the church, but we have continued to worship as a group online via Zoom. Our group is comprised of Yeadon, and Bramhope Methodist Churches and we have regularly had 50+ screens (70+ people) joining the Sunday services. Worshipping on Zoom has allowed us to be even more imaginative and we have been able to draw upon contributions from many members of our Circuit. Our services have been quite different from normal but no less thought provoking. We are looking forward to seeing each other in person on 28th March when we meet in church for our Palm Sunday service. In March we celebrated The World Day of Prayer with our friends from St. Giles. This annual service, (previously called The Women’s World Day of Prayer) is planned by a different country each year and this year was prepared by the women of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. We recorded our contributions in advance and met to celebrate together on 5th March via Zoom. We dedicated the service to Judith Neville a member of our Church who had been involved in the planning of this special service for many years. Judith sadly died in April 2020 and we were unable to join together at the time to celebrate her life, so this was a poignant moment for us all. You may remember the Easter Cross outside the church last year and our messages of Love, Hope and Peace. This year we are erecting the Cross earlier and we are encouraging people to decorate it with flowers at Easter. If you are passing and see a bucket of daffodils next to the Cross, please feel free to place one on the Cross (and then sanitise your hands). Our services for the next few months are a mixture of ‘in church’ services and Zoom services. If you would like to join any of our Zoom services, please contact Rev. Roger Smith. Our ‘in church’ services will be at 10 am on Palm Sunday (28th March) and Easter Day (4th April), then on 11th & 25th April; 9th & 23rd May. On other Sundays, the services will be on Zoom. APPEAL Like any charity we have been adversely affected financially by the lockdowns imposed as a result of the Covid pandemic and in order to rebuild reserves the Church has made an Appeal to Friends and Users. The results of the Appeal have so far been most encouraging, and we wish to take this opportunity of thanking those responding for their generosity. The Church Stewards and Rev Roger Smith, Minister: email [email protected] CELEBRATE EASTER The Churches together are giving out bunches of daffodils to celebrate Easter. So please come and receive a bunch which will be placed outside by the butchers’ and on the wall outside the Methodist Church from 10.00 am Easter Saturday.

The new season is fast approaching though predictably it has been a very different preseason due to Covid. We would usually have been netting at the indoor cricket school from January, but due to the restrictions affecting everyone this has not been possible, so we will be starting the season with virtually no indoor or outdoor practice. However, there is a huge enthusiasm around the club to get playing again and lots going on at the club. The off season has seen a huge investment of time and resource wise (in a socially distanced way) on the playing area at Old Lane, so we are hoping that the Recreation ground will be an even nicer place to play cricket this season. The season is due to start on 10th April with the 1st XI travelling to New Rover CC and the 2nd XI entertaining Green Hammerton at Old Lane. As always everyone is welcome at the ground (subject to the prevailing social distancing guidelines). All of our fixture can be found on our website https://headingleybramhopecricket.co.uk/ The ‘Zoom’ AGM saw James Dalby re-elected as 1st XI Captain, with Matt Frosdick appointed Vice Captain. Steve Walker who joined the club last season has been appointed 2nd XI Captain, assisted by club stalwart Will Clifton as Vice- Captain. The club is always on the lookout for new players and club sponsors to help us strengthen the club on the playing and financial fronts. If you or your business is interested in getting involved in any way, please get in touch. The club is also on the lookout for a 1st XI scorer who is available most Saturday afternoons (and the occasional Sunday). Training, transport, food and payment are available. An understanding of / interest in cricket would be beneficial. If you are interested, please contact James Dalby on 07979 691128.

Each year as Winter turns into Spring our bowlers look forward to the new bowling season and start busying themselves with all the usual pre-season jobs in getting the clubhouse, green and surrounding borders in good order. With the country in lockdown this cannot happen although some necessary work in maintaining the green has been possible. However, Government guidance for organised sport does allow us to start playing again at the end of March, albeit under some constraints. As the Recovery Roadmap is rolled out, we anticipate being able to have a season more like normal and the Club is planning accordingly. By following the guidance, we expect to progressively resume playing games against other clubs and also to be in a position to organise some social events. The safety of all those involved is so important that we will only progress when it is considered safe to do so. The support we have received from our members, sponsors and those organisations including the Parish Council, who have assisted us financially over the last year, is really appreciated as we continue to make our sport available to the local community. We are always looking to attract new members, irrespective of playing experience, so if you are interested please come along and enjoy both the playing and social activities – you will be made very welcome. The 2019/20 Season was a new experience for Bramhope AFC with the move from our Old Lane ground down to an allocated pitch with incredible facilities at our neighbours West Park Leeds RUFC. However just as we were settling into our surroundings with an unbeaten run in the league the season was curtailed: a huge blow to our title aspirations. Then, due to the Covid pandemic, there has been a break of almost 5 months mid-way through the 2020/21 season. We are delighted that our season can be restarted, meaning that a second season in a row isn’t curtailed. We started well in the early part of the season despite our successful manager Dave Young resigning. With caretaker managers Iain Hall, Eddie Neal and Jake Young in charge we managed to remain unbeaten until our last game before the break. With the planned restart on 10th April, we are once again in a fight to win the league title. With a great crop of young players such as Jackson Walker, George Burne, Isaac Hall, Jack Headley and Kamen Greaves, the future is looking bright for the club. The club are still seeking a permanent manager. We are a club on the up with excellent facilities, a great group of people and a strong pool of players. So if you are interested in managing a local team, feel free to drop me an email at [email protected]. We are always on the lookout for sponsors who are interested in getting involved with the club. Please do get in touch if you feel like you would like to support your local football club. And you can keep up to date with our progress on Twitter at @BramhopeAFC. Eddie Neal

Lockdown’s over – dust off your racket! Resumption of outdoor tennis from 29 March Over the last year we have seen an increased number of players at Bramhope Tennis Club, despite lockdowns and restrictions (which we complied with by following LTA guidelines at all times). While some enjoyed social doubles on club nights, others preferred to be put through their paces at our popular coach-led cardio tennis sessions. It was a great opportunity for families to play together, and all for the cost of a takeaway coffee a week. WEST PARK LEEDS RUFC We have exciting news from West Park Leeds RUFC! The hugely popular Beer & Music Festival will go ahead (subject to Government restrictions being lifted) on Saturday 10th July! So, save the date and keep an eye on our social media pages for further updates. All our players from both the adult and age-grade teams are looking forward to getting back to training with a phased return to full contact rugby kicking off from 29th March. From this date, community clubs can hold training sessions and host interclub tag, touch or Ready 4 Rugby matches. From 26th April we will be able to play contact matches with other clubs, which is great news. The club will reopen on 4th May to serve outdoor food and drinks and then fully reopen indoor facilities on 17th May. Tony & Trina’s delicious Roast Dinners and Special Event Nights will continue to be available in the meantime. Menu updates will be posted on the club's Facebook page weekly, so get your orders in early to ensure you don’t miss out. It has been an exciting time for our ex-players. It was great to see ex-West Park Leeds Junior and Colts players, Dan Lancaster and Ben Sugars, representing U20s in their win over Irish on 6th March. And huge congratulations to ex Junior and U18s Ladies player Marion Ridgeway who made her debut for Prem15 side Sale Sharks Women on 13th March. We have also had a number of West Park Leeds registered players playing in the Prem 15s after creating links with both Sale Sharks and DMP Sharks as a pathway for our players. Savannah Andrade and Hannah Davis have also played for Sale Sharks alongside Marion, with Samantha Herrick and Saskia Janzen playing for DMP Sharks. Such a fantastic achievement for them all and great inspiration for all our young players to aspire to follow in their footsteps. In more great news for our budding U18 girls we have secured a youth pathway with Bishop Burton College who have the only female ACE program in the North.

Bramhope Youth Development Trust, like many charities, has had a very quiet year. From the cancellation of our AGM and Presentation Night in March last year to today, we've been riding along on the Pandemic wave which has seen the number of applications for funding reduce significantly. We are in the fortunate position of not having the fixed outgoing costs that many charities have and of course, all of the Trustees are volunteers, so although our investments may have suffered because of Covid, the Trust itself has been protected as much as possible. Although the opportunity to travel through school trips or hobbies has been missed in the last year, many people have used the time to develop new skills such as garden design, home improvements or learning a musical instrument or language. We, at Bramhope Youth Development Trust, would like to remind anyone living within the bounds of Bramhope Parish Council and between the ages of 10 and 18 that we continue to welcome applications for funding. Although the application form found on our website at http://www.bydt.org.uk/application/ is geared towards funding for a trip or project, we also welcome applications for funding for musical instruments or sports equipment or any other personal development via email to [email protected]. Our mission is simple, we exist to help with funding required in the personal development of the youth of our village. We are open to applications. Best wishes & stay safe The Trustees, BYDT

This term the children have shown a real interest in dinosaurs, so we began a little topic called Jurassic World. We have been taking part in Dinosaur Yoga, creating our own dinosaur models using clay and looking for fossils. We also had a visit from a special visitor – a dinosaur came to our playground! We followed its footsteps and found an egg! We decided to look after the dinosaur egg until mummy and daddy came back and we made a nest to keep it warm and safe. We all took it in turns to guess what kind of dinosaur was inside. In a few weeks’ time, we found out it was a Diplodocus! We have also enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year - The Year of The Ox. We created a new Celebrations and Festivals display board, made envelopes to take our chocolate coins home in and tasted noodles at snack time which went down a treat! On Valentine’s Week, we enjoyed creating cards and pictures for the people who are special to us and on Pancake Day we had lots of fun decorating our pancakes with various toppings such as chocolate, syrup, and sprinkles! What a yummy snack! On World Book Day, lots of children (and staff!) arrived at preschool dressed as book characters. We enjoyed taking part in activities relating to books and reading our favourite stories. We are incredibly proud of all our children who have adapted so well to our Covid-19 measurements and a big thank you to all our staff and parents who have been so supportive as always. At that meeting, when the Brownies learnt about Road Safety, from Simon D’Vali, little did we anticipate how infrequently we would use our roads, even for normally routine school journeys! Since the Autumn Term, we have embraced “the new normal” and have had bi-weekly virtual meetings. We have organised various activities as well as Halloween and Christmas crafts and games. The Brownies were very creative when they made some fireworks, and Armpit Fudge was enjoyed by all! Despite the lockdown, the Brownies are actively working towards and earning their badges. Currently we are working on the BE WELL Theme, to improve physical and mental well-being. Brownies have maintained “Gratitude Jars” and we have collectively shared what we are grateful for and what makes us happy. We also had a virtual Martial Arts session delivered by Chris from Blade Martial Arts, where the girls did some manoeuvres, practiced breathing techniques, and counted in Korean! One of the recent highlights was when the Brownies received First Aid coaching from Dr Hardaker. They learnt about the recovery position and how to respond in an emergency. ‘Is Bramhope a Dementia Friendly Community?’ It is several years since I trained as a Dementia Friends Champion and started holding Dementia Friends’ Sessions in the village. Some were well attended and others, sadly, had no attendees. You could surmise that the answer to my question at that point was, ‘No, we’re not Dementia Friendly’. But gradually things did begin to change, starting with the 'Care for a Cuppa’ Café which opened on March 2nd 2020. When the pandemic hit us and our plans were postponed, amazing things began to happen. You will have read in my previous articles for this magazine how suddenly people in the village contacted us with ideas and donations. Our Christmas bag was accompanied by a Christmas Dinner with the help of OPAL and most of our bags have had the support of The Corner Cup with free treats, practical help, enthusiasm and fundraising efforts. ‘She who Bakes’ for the Bramhope Deli is making cakes for one of our future bags, the Yorkshire Corner are donating free cream eggs for our Easter chicks and Tariq at the Village Newsagent has organised a mammoth quiz which raised a phenomenal amount of money for Dementia UK. We have had the support of the children at Bramhope Primary School, many businesses in the village and we have wonderful people who sew, knit and paint beautiful things for our bags. Other people cook and bake for us, think of creative ideas and continue to encourage. We are also extremely grateful for some very generous monetary donations from Bramhope residents. The most important people are the recipients of these goody bags, people who are actually living with dementia. We (the volunteers) can come up with ideas but those living with dementia are best placed to know what they need. So although we are extremely grateful for all your generous donations we really do ask people affected by dementia (in any way) to contact us and tell us just what they would like us to do to demonstrate that we really are dementia friendly in Bramhope. If you would like to be part of our group either as a volunteer, to donate or most importantly, if you have dementia or are a carer, please contact us. I have recently undergone some training with the Alzheimer’s Society to deliver Virtual Dementia Friends Sessions. If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend and would be happy to join a 30 minute Zoom session please contact [email protected] or call Catherine on 07821 626500. Calling all walkers! Thanks to our recently gifted Bramhope and Carlton Parish Council grant, we have made some significant improvements to the footpath that runs past Think Like a Pony. We are thrilled that new fencing and a picnic area will enable our community to safely walk through the site for our new, purpose-built Think Like a Pony Centre opposite High Trees Garden Centre. This Youth Development Horsemanship centre will be the first of its kind in the UK, hence why we are so excited to share this with local residents. Walkers will be able to safely pass by our team of rehabilitated horses who work with some of the most vulnerable children in our community and share in the exciting developments of our organisation.

The warmth of Spring seems a little slow to arrive this year but there is a beacon of light for the future, with the roll out of the COVID vaccines and the Government’s plan to ease restrictions. We held our 12th main meeting via Zoom on 4th March but are really looking forward to being able to have a party to celebrate our return to main meetings at St Giles Church Hall. Our fingers and toes are crossed for our first meeting to be on Thursday 1st July. The organisers of our walking groups and garden group are ready with plans to begin safe face to face activities as soon as the restrictions allow. We have had some fantastic speakers via Zoom and have more planned for the immediate future, including Sex and Scandal at Hampton Court, A Magic Show, and Garden Design. We also held numerous extra activities via Zoom to keep our members entertained and connected during the winter months in Lockdown, these have been as varied as: a talk about an Alstroemeria Nursery; The Life Of A Stuntman; Wildlife Photography and Spoon Percussion. We are feeling very positive that 2021 will be the year of reconnections and face to face fun and are determined that the Bramhope WI plays its part in making that happen for our members. To help our members celebrate Easter they all received a Hug in an Easter bag with a very useful Easter Bunny and Easter egg, wild flower seeds and the invitation to join our sunflower growing competition. (See picture right) We send our best wishes to the village for a lovely Easter.

Headingley Flower Club at Bramhope The Flower Club continues to meet on the first Friday of the month and in common with many other organisations and clubs, we meet via Zoom. Each month the number of members and guests joining us increases. Check out our web site for details of the programme and how to join or take part. We welcome new members and guests. So far this year, we have had demonstrations and workshops and at our February AGM, the speaker was Phil Airey who spoke on Horticap, based near Harlow Carr Gardens. It is a worthwhile charity supporting students with special needs and a visit is recommended when we are able to. Our latest meeting was by Floral Media with Steven and Paula Routledge. Steven advised us on shrubs to grow in the garden for flower arranging and his wife Paula a regular presenter on Radio Nottingham demonstrated 3 arrangements As Spring bursts forth with colourful spring flowers, so our programme reflects warmer days. On 9th April, the evening is entitled Out of Africa by Christine Hinchcliffe, one of the Club’s talented members, who will be demonstrating several arrangements. We look forward to happier occasions when demonstrations and social events resume in the Village Hall. New members and guests are always welcome, and anyone interested should contact the Chairman for details or check our web site. BRAMHOPE VILLAGE HALL Great news! We are ready to welcome everyone back to our beautiful village hall. The Hall is fully compliant with the latest Government guidelines for village halls and our Covid protocol is regularly reviewed. Please contact Peter, the Hall Manager, if you would like to resume your group or start a new one. He will be happy to advise you. When we reopen in April you will find a fully refurbished main hall: new lighting, new heating with childproof radiators, thermostats in every room, spotless new lavatories with special facilities for small children, soundproof doors and new blackout blinds in the main hall. We were expecting to pause the Phoenix Project at this point, as we have used up all the renovation funds. But thanks to your generosity, via our Just Giving page, an extra £1200 has been raised which means we have been able to complete both entrance porches with lovely new flooring. Many thanks to everyone who contributed. The Bramhope Trust has just given us a grant too; many thanks to them for their continued support. We would love to continue the project, as there is still a great deal to do, but with very little income in the last year, we need to consolidate our funds to ensure the financial health of the charity. If you would like to donate to help us with the next phase of renovations, please follow the link below: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/Ourbramhopevillagehall Our events help to bring the community together, especially our annual Christmas Light Switch On. We didn’t want to disappoint last Xmas, so we took the event out into the village. Thank you to all of the households who hosted one of the 12 days of Christmas on the trail and to all those who lit up their houses. Bramhope looked truly fabulous! Thank you for making everyone smile during such a difficult time. We hope we have started a village tradition that can be enjoyed for many years to come. As a fundraiser, we will create a Bramhope Village Calendar for 2022 featuring your own Bramhope photographs. We will be hosting some group Belated Birthday Bashes for the children of Bramhope as soon as we are allowed. So dig out the sequins and party clothes, it’s time to make up on some lost time together soon! As you will read elsewhere, the Bramhope Show Committee are already planning the next Show which will be held on September 12th. So put the date in your diary. Here’s to a summer of fun!

PLATINUM JUBILEE 2022 There are those of us who will never forget the wonderful events that took place in Bramhope during the Diamond Jubilee in the Summer of 2012. The village was decked out in bunting and all sorts of events were organised, culminating in a fantastic bonfire and fireworks display. We were blessed with beautiful weather. Of course, all this didn't happen by magic. It took a lot of organisation by an enthusiastic team led by the late Councillor Clive Fox. The Platinum Jubilee is to be celebrated both nationally and locally from 2-6 June 2022 and Bramhope & Carlton Parish Council would once again like to oversee a local programme of celebrations and encourage local organisations to participate in marking this unique occasion. Once restrictions are lifted an organising committee will meet but, in the meantime, please put your thinking caps on and let us know of any suggestions you may have for how we may celebrate the Jubilee. Please also get in touch if you would like to be part of the organising committee. Although this may seem a long time ahead it makes sense to start planning early. Any ideas, comments or suggestions, please email: [email protected]

CARLTON VILLAGE REPORT Hi, I am Carlton’s new Parish Councillor. My name is Anne-Marie Pickstock, and I have lived in East Carlton village with my husban, and three young daughters for five years. I am currently taking a career break from nursing to look after our daughters, so I feel that I can dedicate some of my time to helping our community change for the better. I aim to be someone the community will look to for help, guidance, and support. As a community leader I will endeavour to influence the decisions affecting the village, for the benefit of the village and the residents. You can contact me via email at: [email protected] Litter Free Carlton One of my first goals as councillor is to have a ‘Litter Free Carlton’. Over the last year there has been a noticeable increase in the amount of litter throughout the village, which in turn is attracting more litter. This discarded rubbish is an eyesore that is negatively impacting on our village! Taking inspiration from the ‘Litter Free Guiseley’ team of volunteers, a small group of us have made a start tackling the issue. I would like to take this opportunity to extend the invite to anybody who is willing to volunteer a little of their time to make the village a better place to live for all. All the necessary equipment will be provided, including smaller pickers suitable for children, if desired. Involving the children is a great way to educate them. As we are a small village getting involved is the ideal opportunity to bring us together, promoting an even greater community spirit. Remember, clean is beautiful and helping is good for the heart and soul! Carlton in Bloom The Parish Council has agreed to replace the badly rotted timber planters next to the watering hole with more robust recycled plastic versions. The Clerk is currently arranging a new licence to facilitate the change, so all being well this will happen in the next few weeks. Once installed the new planters will require maintaining by the village residents. With that in mind I propose to set up a new group called Carlton in Bloom to undertake the task and I am looking for a group of ‘green-fingered’ enthusiastic helpers. Please get in touch with if you are willing to help and improve the appearance of the village. Any Other Business Although not directly related to the village, long-term village residents, Stephen and Patsy Hollins would like to say a huge thank you to all in involved with administering the COVID-19 vaccines at Chevin Medical Practice in Otley. They felt it was a very safe, professional, and efficient service. A sentiment echoed by many I am sure. Well done and thank-you! BRAMHOPE ART CLUB Bramhope Art Club has been unable to hold normal meetings for many months, due, of course, to Covid restrictions. However, with good will and determination, we have continued to hold enjoyable weekly Zoom meetings on Monday evenings and also to produce many new paintings and drawings with a variety of subjects and materials. These are shown at the Zoom get togethers and result in lively discussions! We have also enjoyed lots of short fun quizzes! People who would like to join us can get details from Jeff on 01423 508867. Distance is no object on Zoom - we have a new member from Hull! Of course, we do not know yet when normal meetings will restart but we will publicise these when we know. At the top of the opposite page, you can see a montage of some of the work we have produced. Dorothy Mercer

NEWS FROM ST HELENA'S The enforced hibernation hasn’t been all doom and gloom for the residents of St Helena’s. To have the time and ability to continue woodland walks and enjoy wildlife such as deer, foxes, and badgers as well as many unusual birds has brought such pleasure. Spring has most definitely arrived, and we are looking forward to seeing visitors again when the site reopens in April and being able to meet up in small groups outside. Lockdown hasn’t totally prevented fundraising, even during the long Winter months. Stalls for the Macmillan day raised a good sum; face masks were made and sold by one resident in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance; and another undertook a memorial Easter baskets sold in aid of 'Care for a walk raising £2,400 for Cuppa' Wheatfields, hopefully to be repeated in August. The St Helena’s Community Social Club once again supported the Salvation Army's Christmas present appeal for children, as well as donating useful items for struggling local families. Donate to Dementia UK (Facebook Page) Currently, other residents are raising funds for Dementia UK and the Care for a Cuppa café in Bramhope in readiness for their reopening. Robyn and Xena the dog are walking 100 km to raise funds; the photo caption is the name of the Facebook Page if you wish to support them. The care and support provided within and by the wider community has been inspiring, to all of whom grateful thanks are due. There is a distinct air of optimism as we look to the near future and the opportunity to get involved in local activities and groups once again. Jan Inglis

THE EARLY SETTLEMENT OF BRAMHOPE The archaeological dig which took place on the Spring Wood before construction commenced revealed evidence of a small late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement with at least two phases of occupation. This discovery is of local significance as there is very little evidence of settlement from this period in the Bramhope area.

Reproduction Roundhouse at Chiltern Open Air Museum

Evidence of two roundhouses and part of a third were found in the area immediately south east of the access road to the development. The larger roundhouse was more oval in shape and had a length of around 12.5 metres. The smaller roundhouse was around 9.5 meters in diameter. An oval pit in the centre of the smaller roundhouse contained a neatly fractured lower fragment of a used beehive quern. The grinding surface of the quern stone was relatively worn. In northern parts of Yorkshire and in Durham it is common to find quern stones which have been deliberately fragmented and deposited at separate locations. This practise would have had some symbolic or social meaning to people at that time. No pottery was discovered in the vicinity of the roundhouses, other than a sherd from the 11th to 12th centuries. However, large numbers of small burnt animal bone fragments and charcoal fragments gave evidence of domestic activity. One charred nutshell gave a radiocarbon date of 204 BC to 46 BC, the late Iron Age, a second charred nutshell gave a date of 61 BC to 65 AD and a charcoal fragment a date of 22 AD to 170 AD. Nearby the remnants of cobble and boulder wall and floor foundations, probably for a wooden structure, suggested a former agricultural building of around 8 metres by 4.5 metres, possibly from the late medieval period.
