I am frantically finishing this edition in the hope you get to read it before the end of April! I won’t bore you with details but fate seems to have conspired to delay me even more this month. It has however allowed me the opportunity to add Fred and Nick’s eulogy to David Kirby. A large number of us joined Margaret at the Parish Church in Pockilington for David's memorial. It was fitting tribute to a man of many talents. Happy reading... I don’t know if we will get fined by the parish council for having it out too early. I also have to confess it is non-regulation bunting as it is blue, yellow and white with Yorkshire roses. But we are already greatly looking forward to 3 May. I have been showing greater restraint in my Lenten disciplines, trying not to over- anticipate Easter. Alcohol consumption is down and my trip to the pub on Sunday was for a baptism party, strictly business not pleasure. So is chocolate consumption, with the eating of Easter eggs, even the Cadburys cream egg kind, off the snack menu. Beyond the prohibitions a more positive dimension to Lenten practice is watching the sunrise with Betty each morning (Betty is a dog). We drive to Surprise View and depending on how cold it is and how impressive the sunrise, we walk briefly or for longer. This morning it was extremely blue sky all round and dazzling sun. More often than not it has been overcast and extremely windy. We have the place to ourselves although this morning there was a campervan parked up. Also someone frequently parks very early and cycles to work in all weather conditions - deeply impressive, a masochistic form of park and ride. These early mornings are a discipline, but they also give me a lot of joy. Some people find an early night and a long sleep health-giving and something beautiful. Whatever works for you. Lent is a great opportunity to practice disciplines that give us joy, so that when Easter comes the practices are in place for more joy, more celebration. I’d love to hear how you are preparing for the joy of Easter morning. Tom 5 50-50 CLUB Are you in it? Fred writes: David and Margaret’s arrival in the village of Bramhope in 2004 coincided with a vacancy at St Giles. It is not difficult to imagine what happened next!
