What is Stop Motion Animation?

● Simple definition: An object + small movements + a lot of pictures = stop motion animation ● Complex definition: Stop motion animation (also called stop frame animation) is animation that is captured one frame at time, with physical objects that are moved between frames. When you play back the sequence of rapidly, it creates the illusion of movement.

● Reading – to retell stories and nonfiction text ● Writing – to write scripts and record dialogue for stop motion , autobiographies, biographies, personal ● Science –to represent their understanding of science concepts such as life cycles, weathering and erosion, food chains, etc ● Social studies –to retell the contributions of historical figures, community and government, culture of others ● Math – to act out computational fluency and strategies for solving problems ● Fine Arts – to creatively express what they have learned through original artwork using a variety of media such as stop motion animation How to Implement stop motion animation?

● Select unit of study to integrate animation into ● Decide if the project is teacher or student choice ● Allocate adequate time for project completion ● Identify and follow project timeline (Example 1, Example 2) ● Provide access to materials that will drive creativity ● Direct teach and model components of the project , story elements form, how to create an armature, reflection) ● Confer with frequently to pose questions that help them pace their project and ensure mastery of content ● Allow students to reflect on their project ● Provide an opportunity for students to share their work What tools do you need?

● An idea - select a topic (ex: story, cycle, problem, etc.)to animate ● Story Elements Form (template) - used to retell the plot of an existing story or brainstorm story details for an original piece ● Storyboard (video)- a graphic organizer in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing an animation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storyboard) ● Materials -to create sets and props or pre-made sets and props(glue, scissors, tape, recycled materials, binder clip, etc.) ● Objects - to animate OR wire/clay to create armatures(video) ● Technology - Camera, iPad, or animation kit ● Stop Motion App (Stop Motion) or software (Hue Animation ) ● Storage - plastic containers or cubbies to story materials How will you manage the project Materials?

● Provide a surface to store projects ● Use containers to organize items (clay,armatures, objects, etc.) ● Create a list to track which camera is being used by which student or group of students ● Use gallon size bags to store student work ● Provide baggies for used clay ● Explicitly teach safety expectations and how to properly use tools Thinking this is to much?

● Materials: iPad, construction paper, glue, markers ● Storyboard: outline in their notebook or scratch sheet of paper ● Mistakes ● Critical Thinking: working together to solve problems
