They all died at the scene. Mrs Wallopha’s two-year-old daughter Aphinyaphon Intawong survived the strike. When the lightning hit, the family were preparing to take their six cows and buffaloes to shoot a scene in the sequel to the 2005 hit comedy Yam Yasothon. Star and director of the film Petchtai Wongkamlao, better known by his stage name Mum Jokmok, said he was shocked and saddened by the news. The Songchalee family had not asked for a fee for using their land and livestock in the film and were only too happy to take part. Mr Petchai was due to meet the family for the first time during filming later that day. He said the production team would host the funeral and cover all expenses. The photograph, titled Sunset Jump, was Aawarded first place in the Phuket Gazette Amateur Photo Contest and has earned the couple three nights of luxury and indulgence at the Evason Phuket & Six Senses Spa in Rawai during the Six Senses Phuket Raceweek Regatta. Mr Strake said he and Lin Siu had holidayed in Phuket for the past five years, and he took the picture on Nai Harn Beach when they were on vacation here last year. Coincidentally, Mr Strake and Ms Lin Siu have been in Phuket on their annual break since July 9, and originally planned to leave on Wednesday. “This is great,” said Mr Strake. “We will extend our stay for a few days and enjoy the Six Senses Race Week.”

A total of 32 photographs were submitted for the Phuket Gazette Six Senses Amateur Photo Contest under the theme ‘Phuket Lifestyle’, giving contestants a broad scope of subject matter to choose from. Photo entries ranged from dramatic sunsets and street scenes to wild parties and parades in Patong, and plain old people. A panel of nine judges voted on the submissions. Sunset Jump by Stijn te Strake was a clear winner for the theme but it was closely followed by Vegetarian Festival 2008 taken by Pavel Grankin; Sea Gypsie Kids Playing by Axel Jehangir; Rawai Sunset by Narong Rattanaya; and Jetski by Brian Cole. ive female DJs popped into Phuket last week to show off their turntable talents with an afternoon workshop for aspiring DJs and live, late-night performances last Saturday at Hung Fats, Kalim Beach, followed by an after party until the early hours at the newly Fopened Sound Phuket night club. The five, Phearry (aka DJ Mysterious), Gee, Matty Moody, Tokyo and June, were winners of The Pioneer Lady Pro DJ contest recently held in Bangkok and brought to Phuket by b95FM. All five like to pump out techno tunes with tempos of around 135 beats per minute (bpm). Phaerry, however, prefers to belt out progressive and trance tracks, taking her tempos beyond 140bpm. She was last to perform her set on Saturday, bringing the evening to a climatic end. DJ Gee does house, minimal and techno and says she still gets nervous before perfor- mances. Matty Moody also does house but likes to get funky and take revelers back in time with a bit of retro. Tokyo is a house addict, too, but branches into electro. Tokyo’s first decks were Pioneer CDJ 800s and her first performance was at a Barcardi party. June has been spinning for five years and took up house just last year. Photos by Tommy

However, while invoking the controversial Internal Security Act and deploying the military on the island may seem extreme to many people, the government is right to adopt a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach. Thailand cannot risk a repeat of the security breach and resulting fiasco that took place in Pattaya over the Songkran holidays. Given that both Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban have already been attacked by goons in red shirts, they can hardly be faulted for not accepting at face value promises made by UDD leaders that there would be no repeat of the Pattaya chaos here in Phuket. Claims by the UDD that the people who attacked Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep outside the Interior Ministry at the height of the Songkran turmoil were not ‘real’ red shirts were about as convincing as claims by People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leaders in Phuket that ‘real’ PAD members had nothing to do with the takeover of Phuket Airport in late August last year.
