We had good memories of chasing M&Ms around a plate with Tthe sillysticks, so this time, we’d try to claim the record that’s begging to belong to China: Most rice eaten in one minute. The rules are simple: The grains of rice must be eaten, one by one, using chopsticks. The current world record: 23 grains (set by Rob Beaton of the US on November 12, 2008). HERE’S HOW WE DID: Susan, Assistant Dining Editor: 30 grains Lilly, Copy Editor: 20 grains Marilyn, Arts & Culture Editor: 19 grains Michelle, Music Editor: 15 grains Jonathan, Managing Editor: 14 grains Max, Assistant Web Editor: 13 grains Lauren, Web Editor: 11 grains Tiffany, Style and Living Editor: 11 grains TIPS AND STRATEGIES • The anteater approach. Skip the exacting pincer approach – let the grains of rice stick to your sticks and then convey them to your mouth. Alright, this technique is illegal but it’ll make you feel better. • Don’t chew the raw grains of rice. The hard crunch is too distracting. Swallow them whole instead. BREAKING NEWS Just before going to print, we were informed of the official rules for this challenge. Apparently, the rice must be boiled. In a saucepan. In other words, we crunched raw rice for nothing. This is by far our biggest failure yet. If you’ve got a talent and think you can break a record, give us a shout. To date, little research on soil pollution in ChinaÕs urban parks has been conducted. To identify the concentrations and sources of heavy metals, and to assess the soil environmental qua- lity, samples were collected from 30 urban parks located in the city of Beijing. Subsequently, the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the samples were analyzed. The investigation revealed that the accumulations of Cu and Pb were read- ily apparent in the soils. The integrated pollution index (IPI) of these four metals ranged from 0.97 to 9.21, with the highest IPI in the densely populated historic center district (HCD). Using multivariate statistic approaches (principal components analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), two factors controlling the heavy metal variability were obtained, which accounted for nearly 80% of the total variance.

  • Shanghai, China Overview Introduction
Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.

Mycosphere 5(1), 27–76, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/5/1/2 Abstract A total of 36 species of Hypogymnia are known from southwestern China. This region is a center of biodiversity for the genus. Hypogymnia capitata, H. nitida, H. saxicola, H. pendula, and H. tenuispora are newly described species from Yunnan and Sichuan. Olivetoric acid is new as a major lichen substance in Hypogymnia, occurring only in H. capitata. A key and illustrations are given for the species known from this region, along with five species from adjoining regions that might be confused or have historically been misidentified in this region. Key words – Lecanorales – lichenized ascomycetes – Parmeliaceae – Shaanxi – Sichuan – Tibet – Yunnan – Xizang. Introduction The first major collections of Hypogymnia from southwestern China were by Handel- Mazzetti, from which Zahlbruckner (1930) reported six species now placed in Hypogymnia, and Harry Smith (1921-1934, published piecewise by other authors; Herner 1988). Since the last checklist of lichens in China (Wei 1991), which reported 16 species of Hypogymnia from the southwestern provinces, numerous species of Hypogymnia from southwestern China have been described or revised (Chen 1994, Wei & Bi 1998, McCune & Obermayer 2001, McCune et al.
