Note

Since many of the maps in the collection could only be acquired as copies, please be aware when using them that stated scales may not be accurate and that distortion may have occurred in copying. Where scales are given in the catalogue their main function is to distinguish series of maps.

Since the date of final revision of a map or the date of first publication of a map is the bibliographic element of most interest to those interested in local studies, the majority of maps are listed in chronological order, the exception being Ordnance Survey maps which are listed by scale, parish, sheet number and date of publication for 25” maps and in sheet number and then chronological order for 6” maps.

The record for each map is given as follows:

 Date of final revision/date of publication in bold type e.g. 1834. Where date of publication cannot be accurately ascertained the approximate date of publication is given in square brackets e.g. [1834].

 The title of the map is given in bold italics, e.g. The of Dublin.

 Publication details of map (place of publication: publisher, date of publication)

 Where available (date surveyed, engraved, revised to --, etc. are given)

 Scale of map

Where the map is part of a larger work the details of the complete work are given after 'from:', eg

from: A geographical description of the kingdom of newly corrected and improv'd by actual observations. : Thomas Bowles, 1720.

Maps of the Estates of the are listed separately at the end of the pre- Ordnance Survey maps. The book: Refaussé, Raymond and Mary Clarke. A catalogue of the maps of the estates of the archbishops of Dublin 1654 - 1850. Dublin: Press, 2000 which includes these maps is held in the map drawers.
