HOMELAND SECURITY GUARDING THE EEZ

Leveraging the technological and industrial base of its companies, Using a variety of airborne, maritime, satellite and land assets, FINMECCANICA offers capabilities and solutions that meet the strategic FINMECCANICA solutions detect, identify and track targets in a EEZ goal of global security: scenario. - to prevent terrorists attacks This allows operation control centres and remote assets to view and assess - to reduce the vulnerability to terrorism of both population and key assets targets, manage their resources, communicate with each other and, when - to minimise damage and recovery time after an attack necessary, to intervene, to make swift and secure decisions.

DELIVERING INTEGRATED DEFENCE

FINMECCANICA offers its innovative integrated defence systems as the solution to traditional and new defence missions that call for rapid armed forces deployment and mobility in a joint and combined environment. Command and Control capabilities are integrated with a wide range of air, land, naval and space platforms, platform systems and weapon systems within a global network-centric infrastructure.

Thales and Selex are co- contractors (60% - 40%) Thales and Selex are “solidaire” Coflight components allocated (60/40)

One contract with DSNA : DSNA ensure co-ordination with ENAV and Skyguide

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Rationale

Outdated System Architecture, difficult Système trop complexe to maintain difficult to integrate new services New Generation of FDPs needed

New ATC Concepts require significant FDPS upgrades

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Coflight Mission

Civil Air Traffic Control mission provide services for En-route ATC, Approach ATC, and to Aerodrome Control Functions (VFR and IFR flights)

Military Air Traffic Control mission provide services to military Air Traffic Controllers for the control of military flights Training mission support the training of Coflight users in civil and military missions Test mission test new software version, new environment data set, new IOP version (network of Coflight in test mission)

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Coflight Operational Objectives

Support operational improvement Increase global control capacity of the system: Planning, Sequencing tools, Balancing control capacity/traffic load, Flexible Use of Airspace, Free Routing

Increase controller unit capacity by reducing routine tasks: e.g. Alleviation of coordination procedures Improve Interoperability (Air-Ground, ATM integration)

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Coflight Technical Objectives

 Improve maintainability (reduce life-cycle cost)

 Improve Performance and Dependability

Simplify System operation : customisation, data preparation, testing

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved New system architecture

Evolution from centralised architecture towards a fully distributed and open architecture based on modular components (consistent with AHLM model)

Coflight make use of a new CORBA middleware developed by an industrial consortium grouping THALES and SELEX: CARDAMOM

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Data Distribution in ATC

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Data Distribution in ATC

Air Traffic Control Systems have very stringent requirements in terms of data distribution Flight Data Plan have to be distributed efficiently , timely , and reliably to several nodes Historically ATC Systems have relied on proprietary middleware which where designed ad hoc to address these requirements Often these systems did not provide means for configuring QoS, as it was built inside the system

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Data Distribution in Coflight

The OMG DDS satisfies most of the key requirements of ATC Systems Relevant features include persistency, reliability, high availability, … Due to this natural match between DDS and most of ATC key requirements, Coflight relies on the OMG DDS for the distribution of Flight Data Plans

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved One Stop Shop…

The DDS key features make it a potential one stop shop solution for the data distribution need of ATC Systems As of today it is easily applicable to: Radar Track Distribution Flight Data Plan Distribution Operational Interoperability etc. However, some extension will be needed in order to fully support all ATC needs… But the OMG seems on the right track toward supporting these needs

© 2006, SELEX-SI – All Rights Reserved Concluding Remarks

Coflight is a challenging ATC As DDS nicely address program which will provide many ATC requirements, several improvement in the we are eager to see it state of the art of Air Traffic evolve toward a one- Control stop-shop solution The OMG Data Distribution Service, has been adopted by Coflight as a standard for data dissemination
