Once The Little Hatmaking Book, Japan fills a niche that I found lacking back home. I love hats…. However, in Canada I have always felt like making a hat, is way beyond the skills of the average person. And only professionals could be The Little Hatmaking Book of making hats. In Japan though, I found a book that made me believe that I too could make a hat. I always enjoy the Google translations for the book titles…. The first thing that is great about this book, is all the styles of hats: big wide brims, flipped up brims, brims long enough to cover the ears a bit. And it has lovely pictures of each style of hat, it ends up being just a lovely book to browse. The picture show hats for adults or kids, although pretty much solely for females. Furthermore, there are hats for summer and winter and appropriate fabric ideas for each. In winter there are some faux fur examples, in the summer there is a canvas hat or even a plastic hat. And finally, I love how they are all basically made from the same pieces, just slight variations of each. Now again, this book is in Japanese. In many of my other book reviews I thought you could maybe get away without being able to read Japanese, here though, I think some translation will be required. If you are an experienced seamstress, you may be able to figure it out without translating. The pictures and step by step instructions are very clear and detailed. However, I am no where near experienced and so will make sure I translate and understand what they want me to do. I got the book in a second-hand book store in Osaka for only yen. It also includes all The Little Hatmaking Book patterns in the back to trace or The Little Hatmaking Book out. All in all, I think this book is perfect for me. However, this is a bit stupid sounding in English. The term refers to people or things that prefer one type of something but not another type of the same thing. For example, if you like fried chicken but dislike honey BBQ chicken then you would be wagamama. So, the name of the book is a little joke that the hats are all the same but the reason for showing so many is that obviously people The Little Hatmaking Book prefer one over the others. In October, a new millinery book was released. I like to collect millinery books because they often have useful tips, even for experienced The Little Hatmaking Book. Note: I paid for my copy and have no affiliation with the authors, so this is entirely unbiased. My personal favorite millinery book is still Hats! But this book has one huge advantage for beginners: It requires little in the way of equipment to make all 12 of the hats included. Other millinery books have projects that use multiple styles of brim and crown blocks. In other words, very expensive! The Little Hatmaking Book a wooden bowl can be a good substitute for a dedicated hat block in this shape. The Little Hatmaking Book first I thought this was an odd way to teach how to make a trilby. I have never done a flat-pattern brim on a felt hat. Then when I read the intro page, I saw that this was intentional and for a very good reason:. We are aware that not every home milliner has access to blocks so we have created this classic trilby shape using just a standard dome block and a flat pattern for its brim. It begins with explaining exactly what a Milliner is and the history behind the art of creating hats. Not so many years ago, women of all The Little Hatmaking Book and socioeconomic levels would have never left the house without a hat. Then h The Making of a Milliner is a book that gives detailed instructions to make beautiful hats, but it is so much more. Then hats slipped to holidays and special occasions. But a quote from a woman on the very first page resonated with me, because my very active eighty-something aunt always says people no longer see her anymore. Full color photos beautifully pull the reader into the past then on to the present. The art and skills involve wool, hat blocks, feathers, beads and almost any other kind of adornment you can imagine. I am fascinated with the different types of hat blocks that are shown and the uses for each are detailed. I love the Puzzle Block. It would look so cool on a bookshelf and would surely become a conversation starter with or without a hat on it. The materials a Milliner uses are pictured with paragraphs next to them detailing the use, availability and pros and cons of each. For example, horse hair, also known as crinoline, cannot be blocked, but can be used to create effects, can be frayed, or used on a brim or as a veil. I love learning new and unexpected facts. The instructions to make your own hats are accompanied by a list of materials and The Little Hatmaking Book to purchase them, as well as detailed instructions of the The Little Hatmaking Book. As in the previous sections, the color photographs help show exactly what the instructions outline. Another thing that pulls me into the story of hat making is the fun facts that are listed along with each hat. Did you know Coco Chanel created the first The Little Hatmaking Book hat? I loved reading the history and art of Millinery. If you are wondering why someone would even consider wearing a hat, muh less making a The Little Hatmaking Book in these casual times we live in, read this book. Even though I The Little Hatmaking Book more likely to smack a baseball cap on my head, I love trying on posh hats and have been known to purchase a few to keep the hot summer sun off of my face. Where to get specific supplies such as hat blocks is also included. At pages or so, the book did feel quick. That means it can be viewed as focused or slight, depending on what you are looking for in a millinery book. Certainly there are many other books on the subject of hats alone and this is intended as a starter how-to and not a comprehensive bible on the topic. But at the same time, I wish I had been more inspired by the examples, The Little Hatmaking Book honestly did feel a bit art-school beginner. I have been working with fiber arts for over 26 years. I'm familiar with embroidery, crochet, knitting, sewing, felting, weaving, leatherworking, spinning, tailoring, etc. Millinery, however, is an absolute mystery to me. It requires its own set of tools and materials that are all at once familiar and strange. This book, luckily, assumes you know next to nothing about The Little Hatmaking Book process and starts The Little Hatmaking Book out slowly with instructions on measuring, choosing the right type of hat for your face shape and a tho I have been working with fiber arts for over 26 years. This book, luckily, assumes you know next to nothing about the process and starts you out slowly with instructions on measuring, choosing the right type of hat for your face shape and a thorough introduction to tools and materials you will be using. Most tools and materials used can't be found at your local craft store. Specialty millinery suppliers online are your most likely go-to place, and prepare to invest a little bit in the beginning for the proper supplies. The projects themselves are pretty varied and fun. You're not going to get an encyclopedia of projects. There are 9, all told, but they provide a great base to learn how to use basic millinery materials and create your own projects from there. You only need a table-sized work area to knock out even the most complicated of the projects in the book. There are step by step full color photos included, and projects covered include hats, fascinators and a couple of embellishments - feather flowers and making your own hat pins. My favorite is the Plastic Fantastic Cloche. To think The Little Hatmaking Book could actually make a cloche that would fit my apparently giant noggin — heaven! The hat-making projects follow a clear step-by-step lesson from start to finish. All required materials are listed and photographedas well as how to acquire them. The photos are stunning. I am stunned: These headpieces are pure sculpture! She is evidently a master at her craft. Who knows but I might not be able to resist the call?
