Swedish Folk Music
Ronström Owe 1998: Swedish folk music. Unpublished. Swedish folk music Originally written for Encyclopaedia of world music. By Owe Ronström 1. Concepts, terminology. In Sweden, the term " folkmusik " (folk music) usually refers to orally transmitted music of the rural classes in "the old peasant society", as the Swedish expression goes. " Populärmusik " ("popular music") usually refers to "modern" music created foremost for a city audience. As a result of the interchange between these two emerged what may be defined as a "city folklore", which around 1920 was coined "gammeldans " ("old time dance music"). During the last few decades the term " folklig musik " ("folkish music") has become used as an umbrella term for folk music, gammeldans and some other forms of popular music. In the 1990s "ethnic music", and "world music" have been introduced, most often for modernised forms of non-Swedish folk and popular music. 2. Construction of a national Swedish folk music. Swedish folk music is a composite of a large number of heterogeneous styles and genres, accumulated throughout the centuries. In retrospect, however, these diverse traditions, genres, forms and styles, may seem as a more or less homogenous mass, especially in comparison to today's musical diversity. But to a large extent this homogeneity is a result of powerful ideological filtering processes, by which the heterogeneity of the musical traditions of the rural classes has become seriously reduced. The homogenising of Swedish folk music started already in the late 1800th century, with the introduction of national-romantic ideas from German and French intellectuals, such as the notion of a "folk", with a specifically Swedish cultural tradition. -

Five high-profile progressive clawhammer artists answer common questions concerning the banjo Online banjo forums are filled with all sorts of questions from players interested in instrument choices, banjo set up, personal playing styles, technique, etc. As valuable as these forums might be, they can also be confusing for players trying to navigate advice posted from banjoists who's playing experience might range from a few weeks to literally decades. It was these forum discussions that started me thinking about how nice it would to have access to a collection of banjo related questions that were answered by some of the most respected "progressive" clawhammer banjoists performing today. I am very excited about this project as I don't believe any comprehensive collection of this nature has been published before… Mike Iverson 1 © 2013 by Mikel D. What recording have you made that best showcases this difference? Michael Miles: As musicians, I believe we are the sum of what he have heard. So the more you listen, the richer you get. My personal musical style on the banjo is in great part rooted in Doc Watson and JS Bach. Through Doc Watson, I learned about the phrasing of traditional music. Through Bach, I learned the majesty and reach of all music. -

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan. -

THE JOURNAL OF THE POLYNESIAN SOCIETY VOLUME 126 No.3 SEPTEMBER 2017 INSTRUMENTS IN MOTION: FLUTES, HARMONICAS AND THE INTERPLAY OF SOUND AND SILENCE IN COLONIAL MICRONESIA BRIAN DIETTRICH Victoria University of Wellington The few native musical instruments are now obsolete or nearly so and are replaced by the guitar, harmonica, and ukulele (Fischer and Fischer 1957: 203) Music enters the history of empire as silence (Bohlman 2016: 174) While I was residing in the islands of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia, friends told me a story about a musical instrument no longer seen or heard in the islands but not completely without a presence. I first listened to this tale in 2001 and again in subsequent years. In accounts of the story—said to date from the German colonial administration (1899–1914)—the identity of the instrument was not always clear, but most believed it to be the aangún, a nose flute made of bamboo or mangrove root but not regularly constructed or played since the mid-20th century. The word aangún can be translated as ‘soft-sounder’, a term that designates its delicate tone, but the name also calls to mind its quiet place in histories of Chuuk. The story about the instrument relates how a group of men from one village planned to ambush those from another as part of traditional warfare practices. Although the warring party disguised their plans, one knowledgeable man who knew how to play the instrument sounded a coded warning to his village after he learned about the intentions of the visitors. -
