HOY

The island of Hoy is the second largest of the Orkney Islands, measuring 10 miles long and five miles wide. The property offered for sale is situated in Longhope, on the South side of the island.

In WW11 Lyness, on the East side of the island, was home to many thousands of military personnel, being the main base for the fleet based at Scapa Flow.

Famous for its 450ft Sea Stack, “The Old Man of Hoy”, and its rugged and beautiful scenery, Hoy, while being easily accessible from the mainland, enjoys the safe and tranquil environment of an island community.

Snelsetter is just a short drive from Lyness Harbour which is the main point of entry to Hoy, from Houton, on mainland Orkney. The boat trip takes only 30 minutes, and Houton is only a 10 minute drive from Stromness, where the twice daily Northlink ferry departs for Scrabster, Caithness. Alternatively, there is a daily passenger only ferry, which departs from the pier at Moaness on the East side of the island for the neighbouring island of Graemsay and then on to Stromness.

The island of Hoy is well served by North Walls Community School, a Junior High School, providing education for pupils aged 5 to 14. The school has nursery provision for 3 - 5 year olds, and an integral community swimming pool. Secondary aged children attend Kirkwall Grammer School, and can either travel daily from the island, or stay, Monday to Friday, in the school hostel accommodation in Kirkwall.

The island has a resident doctor, general store, haulage business - supplies and livestock, hotel and Bed and Breakfast accommodation.
