Sibrydion 5 Sibrydion Looking out for each other Cymunedol

Well, I never imagined that this situation with a virus originating in far off Wuhan in China, would develop into a Worldwide pandemic, where local people would be finding shortages in the shops of !

Advice is changing daily, and all we can do is to follow the government’s guidance, (whatever we may think of them), we have to trust the powers that be to make the right calls. If we all just take note of all the people around us in our villages and towns and check if they need anything fetching, or posting, etc. Most of us are likely to be fine and so helping to provide for those less fortunate, whom are high risk, with compromised Immune systems, or already unwell, would be the neighbourly thing to do. If not seen someone for a while, phone them if you have their number, or knock on the door, remembering to keep your Debbie Ashton, distance. Editor

Looking out for someone else, about whom we wrote in Sibrydion last issue, we have created a justgiving page to see if we can raise enough funds to get a Memorial Stone for Teodozia the Polish lady whose grave in St Celynin’s graveyard, is only marked with a weathering wooden cross, which won’t last forever.

We have had a lot of comments and interest in the article, and we can only try to imagine the life that Teodozia had in Poland during wartime and what happened to her before arriving in Llwyngwril. Many Poles were sent to Siberia/Kazakhstan by the Russians. Others were murdered by the Russians at the Katyn massacre of 20,000 Polish officers and academics.

One of our readers’ mother was also from the Russian annexed part of east Poland near Lwõw, and escaped via Iran and Palestine. She went to school in Palestine at the church/army school SMO. Perhaps Teodozia did too. (This lady now lives in a Polish home near ).

As a result of our article, we have received the offer to make the headstone, to respect Teodozia’s Polish origins, to include Polish language and the Polish emblem of the white eagle. We hope that our other readers will visit the page, donate and share the link to the fundraising page and perhaps we can provide her with a fitting memorial which will last ‘for ever’ https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/teodoziamemorialstone

The outcome of the fundraising calendars that after expenses were deducted, Contributors/ the approximate sum of £700 was raised. This will give each charity a donation advertisers – Please of £140 each. This will be issued asap, with just one or two outlets still to note the submission confirm the funds raised. The winner of the £150 incentive to sell the most deadline for content copies, was Fairbourne Post Office, who sold a total of 53 calendars. It was a in your diary (see long and far from easy project. I won’t be doing another calendar! right) –and supply in good time. Many Debbie Ashton – Editor thanks. 01341 250884 or [email protected]

It was one of those maelstroms of rain, hail and wind where you have to lower your head and battle into the horizontal deluge, knowing that it will find out any weak spots in your waterproofs and wet weather gear and by the time he had squelched his way home his boots were wetter on the insides than they were on the outside. So as soon as he arrived at his house the first thing he did was to switch on the heater in his conservatory and put his boots The accommodating teapot on top of it to dry off. Later that day he was in the conservatory, which by this time was quite warm (although I’m not sure what the atmosphere was like with a pair of steaming boots in the corner) What’s in a Name? when an amazing thing happened. They are rather are so descriptive and neatly sum up the character strangely called Goose Barnacles; - but why? or habits of a particular creature. A case in point was an influx of strange little creatures on Fairbourne beach recently. If I started to tell someone about the large numbers of Velella velella of the Porpitidae family which had appeared on the beach, I should imagine that the reaction would probably be a smothered yawn and a polite attempt to change the subject (or a rapid departure). However if I was to say that the beach had been invaded by hundreds of bright blue By the Wind Sailors, it might perhaps engender a bit more interest. I mean! What a great descriptive Goose barnacles (Lepas anatifera) name! - ‘By the Wind Sailor’ - it perfectly encapsulates the nomadic life of these strange little mini-jellyfish type creatures. They bob along Well, these are those crustaceans, that have a on the surface of the sea looking like miniature surf shell which is vaguely shaped like a bird’s head boards with bright blue, erect, gas filled sails which on the end of a long stalked ‘neck’ giving them propel them wherever the wind takes them - in this a superficial resemblance to the neck and head case, rather unfortunately to end their days on the of a goose. In medieval times this rather fanciful strand line of Fairbourne beach. similarity gave rise to the belief that although starting off life in the water, they eventually grew into geese, which is why the Barnacle Goose was so named. Mind you, I suspect that this highly unlikely myth was enthusiastically cultivated as it meant that, although on religious grounds it was forbidden to eat meat on a Friday, the poor old Barnacle Goose could be eaten as it apparently originated in the sea and could therefore be classified as fish. Some common names, although descriptive, can be a little inaccurate at times. For instance the name Oystercatcher seems to suggest that this bird feeds exclusively on oysters, whereas, though they may eat oysters occasionally, their main food source is much more likely to be mussels - and I don’t blame them, have you ever tried to open an oyster? I’ve still got the scar on my thumb from my last botched attempt. Then there is the Black Headed Gull, which actually has a chocolate brown coloured head - and that only in the summer. In the winter it By the Wind Sailor (Velella velella) loses its brown cap and just has two patches on its cheeks. But to be fair, I suppose the name The Chocolate-brown Headed, Seasonally Changing Gull would be a bit of a mouthful, although there

An Exhibition and Events to Celebrate the Centenary of the Church in Wales

March 31st 2020 is the 100th birthday of the Church in Wales. Disestablished from the Church of England in 1920, the last 100 years have seen many changes.

The churches of the Bro Ystumanner Ministry Area are celebrating with an exhibition travelling to each of its churches in turn. This will focus on each decade of the century, as well as a brief history of the Church in Wales, and will provide an opportunity to reflect on past events, and explore some of the diverse and rich history of our local communities.

Each church is currently planning an event at the time they are hosting the exhibition, so do please look out for posters and more information. At our events, 10% of any money raised will go to the Church in Wales Centenary Fund for Housing Justice Cymru, supporting homeless people in Wales, and Christian Aid, supporting the peace-keeping work of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan.

Welcome to churches joining the Ministry Area Along with the Centenary, Bro Ystumanner Ministry Area is also pleased to welcome St Cynon’s, Fairbourne and St Celynnin’s and Llangelynnin Old Church in Llwyngwril, to our group of churches from Easter.

Tues 31 March at 7.00 pm in St Cadfan’s, Tywyn The Celebration begins with a Service of Thanksgiving. Rev. Lindsay Ford, who is retiring as vicar of Llwyngwril and Fairbourne at Easter, will be preaching.

The Exhibition, April – September

Sibrydion 49 Train Drivers WANTED Could YOU help run our model trains?

Dolgellau Model Railway is a scaled replica of part of the to Barmouth Junction line as it was in the early 1960’s. The model was built by Model Railway Society using records and photographs of the actual line, buildings and countryside that existed before closure in early 1965. To further carry on their work, Dolgellau Model Railway Group was formed to expand and, where appropriate, enhance its superb modelling and layout features to support public exhibition opportunities. A detailed model, it accurately recreates the life of Dolgellau and Penmaenpool stations and we have made a significant investment in finding and using authentic locomotives and rolling stock of the period.

Wherever your specific talents lay, you could have a lot to contribute to the overall development of a significant railway model display. Although clearly the model is of a specific place and time, the group is interested in developing features which reflect broader issues, such as earlier railway development. The group come together once a month, usually on the second Saturday, from March to October. The display is held in the vestry of Ebeneser Church, Meyrick Street, Dolgellau and we meet there from 10.00 am onwards. Having successfully exhibited to the public over the last few years, we are actively seeking new If you would like more information or are skilled and semi-skilled members to join us in interested in joining us please contact: “driving” the display forward. 64 Sibrydion Poem for Buddug The By Fiona Williams Floorcovering A Keep-Fit class had started, nearly twenty years ago Men and Women came from far and wide Centre to try and have a go. They all warmed up and stretched their legs, Supplying and Fitting carpets breathed in and touched the floor. in Mid Wales for 15 years. And all the while, Buddug said to them The Old Primary School, “come on you can do more” New Street, Machynlleth SY20 8AT www.floorcoveringcentre.co.uk The group was big during those early years, In numbers, not in waistlines! Sometimes twenty people filled the hall Keeping fit and having great times.

The years went by, the class endured, But needed new equipment. New balls and nets, and weights arrived. Coloured mats adorned the floor. And still you could hear Buddug say “come on you can do more!”

Did I mention the exercises were all in Welsh! Diolch yn fawr, Buddug…. un dau tri pedwar. We’re now working on your core 01654 702423 And still in your head, you could hear Buddug say [email protected] “come on, you can do more!’ We share the same building with The Store (ironmongers) & Claires Soft Furnishings (made to measure curtains) When new folks move to the village it was exciting for everyone. Especially Buddug, who was thinking “I wonder if she’ll come” What a great way to meet new neighbours, Have fun…. it wasn’t a chore. Until you heard Buddug saying “come on, you can do more!”

Coed y Brenin; once a year we went there for a walk. We also had a lovely lunch and mostly sat and talked. Venison burgers, French fries and homemade cakes galore. I was the only time I heard Buddug say “come on, you better not have any more!”

What now for Tuesday mornings as the new decade has begun Will we do Yoga, Pilates, or Zumba? Or Tai Chi in the morning sun? How about paddle boarding or surfing? Or swimming naked from the shore? Whatever it is, you will always hear Buddug saying Supplier of Nature’s Menu and Lily’s Kitchen Pet Foods “come on you can do more!”

Buddug Jones who was games teacher at , for many years, led the keep fit class at Llwyngwril, in her retirement. She has done so for almost the last 20 years, Buddug is now at the stage where she wants to retire from this commitment. Everyone in her classes wish her well and every good wish for her Tuesday lie-ins and ability now to go away for holidays. Go, Buddug, you deserve to have a lovely retirement.
