So the day started with an early morning alarm Also joining Debbie was Ginny Davies and her seven call at 2.30am, the price we pay for living in such month old working Labrador Tommi (Cynhinfa a beautiful place. It was a little bit like “Pig In The City”, with our rural dogs having to get on the shuttle bus and go through underground subways. Selected for the Good Citizen Bronze factor test we had taken Ted and Debbie Ashton. Ted is a 5 year old English Springer Spaniel, bred from two working scent detection dogs, so anyone who knows Ted will understand that asking him to focus on Debbie for a whole day and not to run around being a spaniel was going to be a challenge! At our club, we know that he is more than capable, although he does have a reputation as the class clown. Debbie and Ginny with their prized pooches The dogs and handlers went for their briefi ng and were allowed two practice sessions before their main demonstration and test in the aft ernoon to get used to the environment. Handlers were allowed to take their rewards in to the ring for this, but later on, under test conditions they would not be. The handlers also had a series of questions to answer about being a responsible dog owner, these questions included sections about responsibility and care, veterinary treatment, the countryside code and laws which cover being a dog owner. This question and answer session would be done over a microphone in the arena, so no time for error. The day passed very quickly and the test was soon up on us. It was Ted and Debbie’s turn fi rst. The test covered grooming and examination of the dog, walking at heel, recalling back to the handler and sociable meeting and greeting – to name just a few of the challenges, all under the pressure of loud music and big crowds. Ted and Debbie alike took it all in their stride. Finally the hardest part – the stay. Ted had to stay in one position for a minute with all the noise and people eating their packed Debbie and Ted being judged on examination lunches and aft ernoon teas. We all have our own ideas of what marks the arrival of the great British summer. It could be the fi rst sign of bluebells on a woodland slope, or the welcome sound of the dawn chorus as birds begin to look for mates and nesting sites or maybe it’s the arrival of the swallows returning to nest in the eaves of your house. Be aware that April can also bring late frosts, so protect blossom on fruiting bushes and trees; and although early summer bedding plants will be available to buy, keep baskets and pots protected until the risk of frosts are past. This is the perfect time to feed shrubs and roses, and start to water indoor plants more frequently. Seedlings in the greenhouse and poly-tunnel should be growing nicely and it is also time to directly sow hardy annual seeds into the garden beds and borders. May is one of the busiest months in the gardening calendar! Seedlings under cover will need potting on, John Innes No.2 is designed to provide seedlings with just the right amount of nutrients to help them fl ourish. Trees and shrubs can be given a boost with a liquid feed – one rich in seaweed is ideal.
