E U C O M M Last issue I told you that I am hoping to produce a calendar for 2020. All who enjoy photography and who have an eye for a good picture, of the local area are invited to send entries in this competition. I feel we need to have the entire season to sell a calendar for the following year, to take full advantage Support us in aid of: of the presence of visitors to the area and maximise sales and funds to be raised. The vision is to refl ect the local area, so I am looking for photos from readers, of subjects throughout our distribution area, which is right round the coast from Porthmadog down to the Dyfi Valley to Machynlleth, and also along the Mawddach Valley and across to Bala, from Dolgellau. Profi ts from sales of the calendar will be shared with Aberdyfi Search & Rescue, the RNLI, and Air Ambulance Wales, and I am adding Welsh Hearts to the list also (who have done so much to provide defi brillators to our local communities and trained locals to use them). They are all crucial services to us in this area, so please support this competition and put your entries in. Non-professional photographers are invited to submit entries of photos, and you must ensure you have a high-resolution (minimum 300dpi) fi le for it. Closing date for entries to be received is 23:59 on 1st December 2018. Keep the high resolution fi le safe, and if your photo is selected for printing, you will be asked for this. There will be a small entry fee of £3 per photo, which will be used to provide cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd awarded images. You can send your entries as A5 print, to me by post to: Bod Idris, ABERDYFI Llwyngwril, LL37 2JB, giving your name, postal address, email address, and a contact number (landline and/or mobile). Give a title for your picture and state where you took the photograph. Label each entry. Your details will be stored securely, and will only be used in relation to this competition. Please include the entry fee with your photograph. Cheques payable to: Sibrydion Cymuned. The very best photo will have pride of place on the front of the calendar. I look forward to seeing your entries. Let’s raise some funds for these crucial local charities. So look back at your photos or get snapping. The only criteria are that it has to be taken within this area in South Snowdonia/Meirionnydd, where Sibrydion is distributed. It must be your own work and you must be the holder of any copyright for your pictures. If you are under 18, please ask your parent/guardian to issue consent for you to enter the competition – a note with your entry with signature and name printed, stating that they are parent or guardian. • “The Prophecies of Fferyll”: Virgilian Reception in Wales
“The Prophecies of Fferyll”: Virgilian Reception in Wales Revised from a paper given to the Virgil Society on 18 May 2013 Davies Whenever I make the short journey from my home to Swansea’s railway station, I pass two shops which remind me of Virgil. Both are chemist shops, both belong to large retail empires. The name-boards above their doors proclaim that each shop is not only a “pharmacy” but also a fferyllfa, literally “Virgil’s place”. In bilingual Wales homage is paid to the greatest of poets every time we collect a prescription! The Welsh words for a chemist or pharmacist fferyllydd( ), for pharmaceutical science (fferylliaeth), for a retort (fferyllwydr) are – like fferyllfa, the chemist’s shop – all derived from Fferyll, a learned form of Virgil’s name regularly used by writers and poets of the Middle Ages in Wales.1 For example, the 14th-century Dafydd ap Gwilym, in one of his love poems, pic- tures his beloved as an enchantress and the silver harp that she is imagined playing as o ffyrf gelfyddyd Fferyll (“shaped by Virgil’s mighty art”).2 This is, of course, the Virgil “of popular legend”, as Comparetti describes him: the Virgil of the Neapolitan tales narrated by Gervase of Tilbury and Conrad of Querfurt, Virgil the magician and alchemist, whose literary roots may be in Ecl. 8, a fascinating counterfoil to the prophet of the Christian interpretation of Ecl. 4.3 Not that the role of magician and the role of prophet were so differentiated in the medieval mind as they might be today.
