He was born at Cynlas, Cefnddwysarn, Llanfor, Merionethshire, and educated in Llandderfel and Bala, before going to University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1875-1879. He joined New College, Oxford, in 1880, graduating in 1884 with a BA in Modern History, adding an MA in 1897. He became the private secretary of John Brunner, MP for Northwich, Cheshire, and in August 1886 he was elected as Liberal MP for Merioneth. By 1892, he was second whip in Gladstone's Liberal Government, and was chief Liberal whip, 1894-1895, under Lord Rosebery. He vigorously promoted Welsh interests in Parliament, advocating the disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales, the creation of a Welsh assembly and national library, and pushing through the establishment of a Royal Commission on land in Wales and Monmouthshire. At one time he was a prominent member of the Cymru Fydd movement. He had a great influence on educational administration in Wales. He contributed to the passing of the Welsh Intermediate and Technical Education Act 1889, and was a member the University of Wales Court and the Central Welsh Board. He was the founder of the University of Wales' Old Students' Association. He married Annie Jane Davies (1873-1942) of Cwrt-mawr, Llangeitho, Cardiganshire, in 1898. However, his health was fragile, and he died on 5 April 1899, while in Cannes, France, and was buried at Cefnddwysarn. His only son, T. I. Ellis, was born eight months later. A volume entitled Speeches and Addresses was published by Hughes and Son, Wrexham, in 1912. His widow subsequently married the Rev. Peter Hughes Griffiths (1871-1937). At the turn of the twentieth century, however, as Welsh became a minority language in Wales, there grew an increasing recognition that the school system was key to the safeguarding and revitalisation of the language. Welsh finally became a compulsory language up to GCSE (16+) level in all state schools in Wales in 1999.

  • AN EXAMINATION of the CELWYDD GOLAU Presented For
AN EXAMINATION OF THE CELWYDD GOLAU Presented for fulfillment of the MPhil in Welsh in 2015 Bradford Marr McMullen i Summary: Celwydd golau, or “light lie”, is the Welsh term for the tall tale. Tall tales, a genre of folklore characterized by their exaggerated qualities, are common internationally, although scholarship on the genre has focused on the American examples. The goal of this study is to provide an overview of the genre as it exists in the Welsh folk tradition, making use of the folklore archive at St. Fagans National History Museum. The first chapter of this study is a review of existing literature on the tall tale, as well as an examination of the American tall tale tradition and the history of Welsh folklore collecting. The second chapter examines celwydd golau about animals found in the archive at St. Fagans National History Museum, while the third chapter examines celwydd golau about linguistic mistakes in Welsh and English. The fourth chapter concludes the study by summarizing the previous chapters and offering any final thoughts as well as potential further avenues of study. There are also four appendices to this study. Appendix A offers summaries of the celwydd golau about animals, while Appendix B offers summaries of the celwydd golau about linguistic mistakes. Appendix C offers some brief biographical data about several of the tellers mentioned multiple times, as well as a list of celwydd golau associated with them. Appendix D consists of a series of maps, documenting the locations from which each example was collected.

  • Rob Phillips the WELSH POLITICAL ARCHIVE at the NATIONAL LIBRARY of WALES
Rob Phillips THE WELSH POLITICAL ARCHIVE AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF WALES Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru or The National Library of Wales (NLW) in Aberystwyth was established in 1909, to collect and provide access to the documentary history of the nation. It is a legal deposit library and is therefore entitled to receive a copy of all books, magazines, newspapers etc. published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Welsh Political Archive (WPA) is a dedicated programme within the Library, established in 1983, to collect, catalogue and promote archival material which reflects the political life of Wales. There is one staff member who coordinates the WPA’s activities, answers enquiries, promotes the archive and works to attract archives to add to the collection. Organising and cataloguing archives is undertaken by staff in the NLW’s Archives and Manuscripts Section. But as the political collections include tapes of radio and television programmes, photographs, works of art, electronic files and websites, the WPA works across departments within the National Library. In addition to curatorial work, the Welsh Political Archive also works to promote the use of the political collections through lectures and exhibitions. An advisory committee (comprised of representatives of political parties and civil society, journalists and academics), guiding the work of the WPA, meets annually.
