Sibrydion 7 Sibrydion Turning the tide on plastic Cymunedol It is so heartening to see the various activities in the area, encouraged by organisations such as Tywyn Beach Guardians, Greener Tywyn and others in the villages, led by individuals, whom are trying very hard to clean up the area, and to reduce the amount of rubbish and plastic in particular, which fi nds its way, inevitably, into the seas and oceans. A signifi cant impetus for this was the footage on Blue Planet 2, by David Attenborough. Film of marine life swimming amidst the detritus of modern living, giving graphic evidence of how we as a race are destroying the planet, which was so perfectly created. It brought it into our living rooms. This problem has been in existence for many years. In 1980, a 914kg leatherback turtle found on Harlech beach, (it can now be seen in the National Museum in ). It had been killed by a polythene bag, which Debbie Ashton, had been ingested. Since then, the seas have become more and more Editor polluted and more marine life has been killed. Let us all try to do our bit, to ‘turn the tide’ on plastic and fi nd ways of living a plastic-free life! If you visit the coast, and you see pieces of plastic Please note the on the beaches, please pick it up – even aim to bring away 3 pieces of submission plastic at each visit. It will be a laborious job, but I’m sure we can all make deadline for content in your diary –and a diff erence, albeit somewhat late. So, let us all try and drastically reduce supply in good time. our use of plastic, re-use what can be re-used and recycle responsibly by Many thanks. using the council recycling boxes we have all got.

Sibrydion readers who enjoy getting outside to explore our beautiful surroundings will be pleased to know that many pubs, restaurants and shops have signed up to the ‘Refi ll’ initiative. There are currently 1600 refi ll locations across the UK and the number is steadily increasing. There is now an app that you can download which pinpoints businesses that have signed up to this service. Your water bottle will be refi lled with fresh, cool tap water at these locations thus discouraging the use of single-use plastic bottles and providing a much needed service to thirsty travellers who aren’t looking to sit down and order a drink, although they might return on another occasion, if given a friendly smile with their refi ll. Many businesses in our area have already joined Lorem ipsum the scheme like Caff i’r Ceunant in Abergynolwyn and Skippy’s Fish & Chips in Tywyn, but it would be wonderful if we could get many more on board. The only other point I would want to mention is that if the bitch has only had one puppy from a litter, we call this a singleton pup. These puppies can be more difficult as they don’t receive the interaction and play in the litter, which is where your puppy learns valuable social skills, bite inhibition and play skills a good knowledgeable breeder would be able to assist to train this and help the puppy along, but I would always err on the side of caution. It would also be great if you could see the father of the puppies, but this may mean travelling to see a stud dog. It is of personal preference as to which dog you choose. I personally think they choose you, if you spend enough time with the litter, some dogs are always more outgoing and forward than others. We have been plagued this year by a marauding and raucous gang of Magpies, which have caused havoc around the bird table and have also made several attempts to break into one nest box, in which a pair of Great Tits had set up home. They weren’t successful, but their repeated raids, unfortunately, must have put off the tits, although our other Herring Gul boxes have been un-molested so maybe they moved to a quieter residence. It did strike me that the amount of energy the gull expended to get hold of one rather insignifi cant mouthful seemed a bit disproportionate, almost as if it just enjoyed acting the bully and throwing its weight around, but then there’s an old saying that stolen apples taste the sweetest (or something like European Magpie that).
