4 Sibrydion Sibrydion 5 Sibrydion After the Summer Cymunedol and Looking Forward

Well, I don’t think we have done too badly for weather this summer! Visitors will have had at least some good weather. We have sold quite a few of our charity calendars over the summer and the charities we are raising money for have been very busy on behalf of visitors and locals alike. We still need the support of our communities, to raise as much as we can for the charities. We have covered the cost of printing (the only cost required to be covered), so now the sales will be 100% to the charities. Debbie Ashton, Please support the project and if you can buy one or two as Christmas gifts, Editor for family or friends who love this area, please do. Order directly from me, [email protected] or phone: 01341 250884 (if leaving a message leave your number/details clearly and slowly, I can call you back) or text to 07876 231908. I can post them to you, if you are unable to get to one of the outlets selling them. We are offering£150 to the outlet who manages to sell the most copies by the new Year. A nice little windfall at a lean time of year, to encourage our outlets to ‘sell’. I am grateful to all who have made great efforts so far and hope that the Christmas trade may see the rest of the calendars printed dispatched/sold. Any outlets who would like to participate in this competition, please ring me and let me know if you would like the chance to win the £150, I will get some calendars to you as soon as possible.

He was 25 years old, fit and healthy, and his death has left our family shattered. If you didn’t know Ben then you need to know he was amazing! He was funny, generous, caring, effortlessly cool, adventurous and always smiling. Ben was always great at pulling people together and we want to keep that connection with people going. We are going to celebrate Ben’s birthday in the way that he would; surrounded by people and trying to focus on the positive. We have chosen to support the work of Welsh Hearts, and all proceeds will be going to them. We chose Welsh Hearts because we believe in the work that they are doing to install defibrillators across Wales and to offer heart screening. Ben was also so proud to be Welsh! We don’t know if screening would have helped Ben, and unfortunately on the day, the defibrillator wasn’t able to save his life, but at least we know that he was given that chance. We believe that everyone should be given the same chance if they find themselves, or a loved one in a similar situation.”

A new exhibition of Welsh landscapes comes to Machynlleth

In the heart of the Here, Daniel tells us about his explorative journey countryside, acclaimed artist, Daniel J. from Anglesey to Pembrokeshire. Yeomans, resides with his purpose-built “One of my biggest loves is adventuring outdoors, art studio. hiking and discovering new locations. It seemed With a childhood spent living by the Malvern Hills, natural to combine that with my love of painting, a love of the outdoors began at an early age. Daniel so I have always enjoyed painting landscapes on went on to study at the Charles H. Cecil Studios location, benefitting from working with natural light in Florence, where he trained using a technique and beautiful surroundings. known as ‘sight-size’ favoured by masters such as I perfected the customization of my van, which Velasquez and Van Dyck. allowed me to dry twenty wet paintings at a time, Daniel is now a successful, renowned artist, with without them touching, which was fundamental collections hanging worldwide. Inspired by ‘plein to making this trip work! Armed with my painting air’ artists such as Monet and Joaquin Sorolla, materials, a tent and some hiking gear, I headed off Daniel paints landscapes on location, whilst also to start the adventure. holding an impressive portfolio of portraiture work. The inspiration for the trip started with a visit to This summer, Daniel decided to venture out of Anglesey. I had never been and was head over heels his base to create a pictorial journey exploring instantly. It got me wondering how many more the most-loved and hidden treasures of Wales. places in Wales I had not yet discovered. I wanted The result is an exquisite collection of oil the paintings to bring to life my journey through paintings, which are due to be displayed at MOMA this magnificent country and create a showcase for Machynlleth from the end of November. At each location I sought out a scene, anything from bales of hay that looked like they were rolling down to the sea, or a sunset over the hills from the top of . There is no accounting for the Great British weather in Wales - I encountered everything from blistering sunshine to crisp snowfall. I took great care in spending days scouting out the best vistas, looking for the ideal combination of light and composition. And then it would rain and the whole scene would change, so I would be back to square one! As frustrating as this was, it pushed me to delve further ‘North – South, A Very Welsh Exhibition’ in to the hidden wonders of the countryside. will be on display at MOMA Machynlleth from 30th November 2019 until 18th January 2020. One of the most challenging parts of the trip was trying to capture the view at Tryfan in Snowdonia. All works will be available to purchase, and I started off four days in a row with a 3:45am wake- admission to the MOMA is free. The views were dramatic and www.danieljamesyeomans.com awe-inspiring, but I didn’t feel the work captured the essence of Snowdonia so the piece was abandoned. This collection is a labour of love to highlight the country’s magnificent views. As I’m due to move to Switzerland next year, this will be the last chance to see my Welsh landscapes for some time, but I’m sure the area will draw me back again in the future.”

Autumn Calls By Lisa Cunningham-Allsop – Camlan Garden Centre, Dinas Mawddwy.

Looking back over the summer months it doesn’t seem as if there was a proper sustained period of good weather. I know from customers telling me that vegetables struggled this year and there seemed to be a plague of slugs! October This is the ideal time to seed grass onto any bare patches that have appeared. Rake the ground over and if you have time give the soil a light feed a few days before sowing; and use a horticultural sand to mix in with the seed to give a more even covering. Lightly rake over and water. The morning dew and rain should do the rest for you! October is a busy month in the garden: harvest the last of the vegetables and fruit, take hard wood cuttings and cut down perennials. Lift and divide established rhubarb. Tender plants should time to start planting as it will be too late before be moved under cover to protect from early and you know it! Remove dead summer bedding plants unexpected frosts- mulch over semi-hardy plants if there are any left in the garden, and replace in borders or lift and keep under cover in the shed with pansies, violas, cyclamen, primroses and or greenhouse. wallflowers for winter colour (all now in stock!) It’s time to start planning bulb planting- we have November a good stock which includes dwarf and alpine Winter will be making itself felt by now, with species for exposed windy gardens. Now is a good regular frosty mornings and cold daytime temperatures. It’s the perfect time to lift and move any trees or shrubs and plant new fruiting plants and trees – we will have a good choice of Welsh variety fruit trees as well as favourites such as currants, gooseberries and raspberries. If you plant now you will be rewarded in spring with a plant that has had an early start with rooting in. Plant new hedging now too, we can provide bare root native British hedging plants which create perfect habitats for our wildlife and pollinators.

42 Sibrydion If you have lots of pots outdoors keep an eye on forecasts and protect with insulating materials such as bubble wrap or fleece to prevent pots from cracking if temperatures are going to drop low for any sustained period of time. Also lift pots on to feet to prevent them from becoming waterlogged- we sell British made terracotta feet in the shop which are perfect for the job. Our garden centre shop has a wide range of equipment and resources, and we are happy to order items in if we don’t have them! The range of plants is always changing and new stock arriving weekly so why not pop in and have a look? You can find us on Facebook and Titter @camlandinas and our updated website is www.camlan.cymru which also has information about the café and farm shop.

Our farm shop has swapped places with the gardening shop and is selling a wider selection of Welsh cheeses and welsh produce in general. By the time you read this we will have our alcohol license too! If you are a local producer of foods get in touch with Ian at: [email protected]
