HSTORIA REGUM BRITANNIAE 1972130 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1971-72 Disgrifiad / Description A manuscript of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, preceded by the Troianorum Historia of Dares Phrygius, written, according to the colophon, by William of Wodecherclle, monk and former lay brother of Robertsbridge Abbey in Sussex, in the second half of the thirteenth century, formerly Phillipps MS 26233 (NLW MS 13210D). The text of the Historia Regum Britanniae is unusually interesting and as complicated as any yet analysed. The underlying text is that of the Variant Version published by Hammer (from the five manuscripts of it then known), thought to be the work of a Welshman, and is closely related to Hammer's H (Harleian MS 6358), but it is freer of careless errors than H and, unlike H, the Variant text continues to the end. The text of the new manuscript (now referenced NLW MS 13210D) is however complicated by a conflation exactly analogous to that of the Cardiff MS . (Hammer's C). In each case a redactor with access to a vulgate text has produced an `improved' Variant Version. The redactor of the NLW text departs far less than C from the Variant Version. He grafts onto his text passages from the vulgate omitted and curtailed in the Variant Version. His treatment of his vulgate source is fairly free. His choice of passages from the vulgate is selective, they are sometimes themselves curtailed - he sometimes re-phrases sentences; he makes small additions of his own. Probably this redactor was not William of Wodecherche himself but the scribe of his exemplar or of an earlier antecendent. Further noteworthy points about the NLW Variant text are that it is the only text of the Variant Version to define itself (Explicit hystoria brittonum correcta et abbreviata);it is the only one of known provenance; it is, like H, divided into books, though with slightly different divisions; a portion of Book XI is wanting and has been since at latest the sixteenth century (II. 111-365 in Hammer), probably due to the loss of two bifolia in the middle of the last quire after f. 62. The NLW manuscript belonged to Archbishop Mathew Parker and bears the red crayon pagination associated with him. It is listed in Parker's register but appears never to have been received by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In Parker's time and perhaps from the first, the manuscript was bound with Phillipps MSS 26641 (William of Malmesbury) and 26642 (Giraldus Cambrensis). The present binding is eighteenth century half leather and marbled boards. The manuscript is large (12¾" x 9¼''), written in a skilful text hand, has red and blue parti-coloured initials at the beginnings of books, and is in good condition.

ARMS AND PEDIGREES 1972131 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1971-72 Disgrifiad / Description A large folio volume (120 ff.) of arms and pedigrees apparently compiled in the period c. 1590 - c. 1604 (NLW MS 20898E). It comprises (a) (ff. 1-16) an armorial mostly of Welsh ancestor figures and families of Flintshire, Denbighshire and Cheshire, the arms, as throughout the volume, finely emblazoned and painted; (b) (ff. 26-53v) copies of some eighty documents, 13-15 cent. (deeds, wills, letters, extracts from court rolls), relating to the families of Puleston, Hanmer, Bulkeley, Barr and Almer, with connected pedigrees and genealogical data, all emblazoned; (c) (ff. 55-120v) pedigrees of families again mostly of Flintshire, Denbighshire, and Cheshire, not in tabular form, again all emblazoned. The binding of gold-stamped red morocco is by Riviere. No compiler or scribe identifies himself but the concurrence of genealogies in the second part of the volume point to Edward Puleston (born 1547), the eldest son of Edward Puleston, the second son of Sir Edward Puleston of Llai and Emral; the manuscript indeed proves itself to be the collection of Edward Puleston of Trefalun, known to the main seventeenth century North Wales genealogists (Lewys Dwnn, Peter Ellis, Robert Vaughan, John Salusbury) and then lost sight of. A parchment slip now laid down on the inside of the upper cover (and presumably cut from an old cover) bears the signature of the first Randle Holme, whose hand also appears on f. 8v. On f. 9v. is a note in Lewys Dwnn's hand. There are additions to the third part of the manuscript in several hands up to the mid 17 century. On f. 2 is a note of ownership by Sir Thomas Powell, baronet, no doubt the Sir Thomas Powell of Birkenhead (d. c. 1700) whose mother was a daughter of Edward Puleston.

`THE TABLE OF CHAPTERS OF THE FIRST BOOK ETC' 1972132 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1971-72 Disgrifiad / Description A manuscript of 138 leaves of an earlier version of `The First Booke of the Description of Penbrookshire in generall' by George Owen of Henllys than Harleian MS. 6250 (British Museum) which Dr. Henry Owen edited in the Cymmrodorion Record Series, No. 1, in 1892 (NLW MS 13212D). It has no title page but begins with `The Table of Chapters of the first book conteyning a description of Penbrokeshire in . . .' and continues with all the 28 chapters of the work except chapter 26 which is now wanting. This manuscript or a close copy of it was the one used by Richard Fenton for his edition of the work in 1796 in The Cambrian Register II, 53-230. The present manuscript, which is well written and arranged, is probably mainly in the hand of one (or more) of Owen's scribes. At the beginning of chapter 1 (f. 1) is the date `Lune 13 Decembr. 1602', which is the day Owen seems to have begun writing the work, and at the end of the last chapter (f. 135) `Finis 18 Maii 1603' followed by `Opus iii Mensu[m] Magna per Intervalla'. At the end of several chapters the author notes the date when he checked the transcript made by the scribe, e.g., at the end of chapter 9 (f. 37b) and chapter 15 (f. 64) `ex[aminatur] hucusque 30 Julii 1603' (crossed out), and at the end of chapters 16-23 (ff. 69, 70b, 72, 75, 79b, 88, 97, 100b) `ex[aminatur] 17 Aug., He checked the writing out of the last chapters between 22 and 25 August 1603 (f. 108b, 115, 124b, 135). An interesting feature of the manuscript is the number of emendations, deletions and additions by the author himself with marginal instructions to the scribe preparatory to making a `next copye' of the work. This `next copye' was almost certainly Harleian MS. 6250 in which all the author's corrections and insertions are properly included and all his instructions carried out to the letter. There are of course very many variations in spellings. The volume is roughly bound in vellum, and needs some repairs. On the strength of provenance marks, its chain of ownership after the author's day may be John Owen of Berllan in Eglwyswrw, John Lewis of Manarnawan, great-grandfather of Richard Fenton, Erasmus Saunders of Cilrhedyn, Edward Lhuyd, and Sir Thomas Sebright. It was purchased by Machel Stace at the Sebright sale in 1807, and was in the library of the Marquess of Bute when it was reported on by R. B. Knowles for the Historical Manuscripts Commission (Third Report). (Purchased wholly with the aid of a grant from the Friends of the National Library of Wales.)

The remaining pages of the volume are blank. The work of the original scribe is palpably confined to the period 1844-55, the earlier records on his own evidence having been transcribed from two previous registers, the first ending in 1797 and the second containing entries of baptism for 1806 but not regularly recorded and probably not begun until 1817. The identity of the first of these two sources poses an interesting problem of provenance. Joshua Thomas, in his holograph `History of the Baptist Churches in Wales', records that the early church, around 1704, possessed a church book which `by some accident . . . was rendered useless, and so demolished', but that John Morgan of Cardigan, a `ruling elder', had compiled a transcript of its beginning, extending to the year 1729. Joshua Thomas was able to glean copious information from this transcript, but from such collation as is possible on the basis of his extracts it is very unlikely that this volume can be identified with the first of the two church books used by James Jones.
