Sibrydion 3 10 years birthday: Sibrydion COMPETITION TIME! Cymunedol

Well, I can hardly believe it is 10 years, next issue (Oct/Nov) since I started to publish Sibrydion. I am hoping to publish a calendar for 2020, (it is too late now for 2019, as in this low population, tourist area – I feel we need to have the entire season to sell a calendar for the following year) to take full advantage of the presence of visitors to the area and maximise sales and funds raised. The vision is to refl ect the local area, so I am looking for photos from readers, Support us in aid of: of subjects throughout our distribution area, which is right round the coast from down to the Dyfi Valley to Machynlleth, and also along the Mawddach Valley and across to Bala, from Dolgellau. Profi ts from sales of the calendar will be shared with Aberdyfi Search & Rescue, the RNLI, and Air Ambulance Wales, all crucial services to us in this area, so please support this competition. Non-professional photographers are invited to submit entries of photos, and you must ensure you have a high-resolution (minimum 300dpi) fi le for it. Keep this safe, and if your photo is selected for printing, you will be asked for the hi-res version. There will be a small entry fee of £3 per photo, which will be used to provide cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd awarded images. You can send your entries an A5 print, to me by post to: Bod Idris, Llwyngwril, LL37 2JB, giving your name, postal address, email address, and a phone contact number (landline and/or mobile). Give a title for your picture and state where you took the photograph. Your details will be stored securely, and will only be used in relation to this competition. Please include the entry fee with your photograph. Cheques payable to: Sibrydion Cymuned. The best photo will have pride of place on the front of the calendar. I look forward to seeing your entries. Let’s raise some funds for these crucial local ABERDYFI charities, which save many lives in the area, visitors and locals alike. So look back at your photos or get snapping. The only criteria are that it has to be taken within this area in South /, where Sibrydion is distributed. It must be your own work and you must be the holder of any copyright for your pictures. If you are under 18, please ask your parent/ guardian to issue consent for you to enter the competition – a note with your entry with signature and name printed and parent or guardian stated. We welcome entries from under 18s wholeheartedly!

When my husband recently asked me what I would like for my 50th Birthday, my immediate reacon (apart from surprise that he was being so organised - aer all, my 50th was sll over a year away!) was that I wanted to go to the Great Wall of China. But this request wasn’t just some random holiday desnaon - although I must admit, The Great Wall has always been on my ‘bucket list’ of places to visit. The Alzheimer’s Society funding not only supports these sufferers and their families, but goes towards vital research in finding a cure. I strongly believe that it will be possible to beat this disease and end the loneliness, confusion, fear and hopelessness that all forms of demena inflict which is why I am commied to raising money and awareness for this great cause.

At Sesiwn Fawr there will be a Sgarff Idris Gawr stall for you to visit and gather more information about the project. We will also be displaying the scarf and the stories of its progress in Dolgellau town centre as it grows through the season. Already, we have offers of help from lovely people who live away from the area and indeed overseas, who have been inspired by this idea. In the next issue we will be able to go into more detail. We would love to hear the stories that lie behind them and how you have been inspired by this idea, which will lead to keeping those in need cosy and warm.

Sciurus carolinensis - better known to most I suppose, as both rats and squirrels are rodents, of us as the Grey Squirrel, must surely be one but that’s about the only similarity that I can see. Between 1876 As I said, a lot of people don’t think much of and 1929, grey squirrels were brought over and them - some of the rather unkind epithets used to released here, until someone thought ‘Hang on, describe them include ‘vermin’, ‘rats with bushy perhaps this isn’t such a good idea’, by which time tails’ and ‘alien invaders’. Well, ‘vermin’ is a word it was too late as the squirrels had established we humans use to describe any creature that lives themselves comfortably and obviously decided where we don’t want it to live, annoys us, is very that as they were here, they might as well make the successful and especially, if it gets the better of us. most of it - which they proceeded to do and very ‘Rats with bushy tails’ has an element of truth in it successfully too.

40 Sibrydion The key to their success is their adaptability - they can live in parks, gardens and woodland and will eat a wide range of food, including unfortunately, bird’s eggs and nestlings if they come across them. Being gnawing animals their mainstays are nuts and seeds and also the under layer of tree bark. This is when they can come into confl ict with humans - we all know how determined and resourceful they can be in accessing, breaking into and emptying bird nut feeders and they will also strip bark from trees to get at the sweet under layer, damaging branches and sometimes killing entire trees if they ‘ring bark’ a trunk - that Leaving aside any prejudices we might have is remove a complete circle of bark’. Incidentally, regarding grey squirrels, you just can’t help but if you are despairing as you watch a squirrel admire their amazing acrobatic skills. They are destroying yet another expensive ‘ squirrel proof’ superbly adapted for an arboreal life although feeder why not try this tip, which is actually they are just as nimble and elusive on the ground. recommended by the RSPB. Although when it comes to tightrope walking the grey squirrel reigns supreme. Outside our house is a telegraph pole with a heavy-duty electricity cable stretching right the way down to the lane below at a very steep angle. I watched as a squirrel came running along the wire, uphill, occasionally stopping to admire the view or have a quick look behind it. When it reached the pole, it sat there for a while and then decided to return down the wire in the opposite direction as if just for the fun of it. It gave me vertigo just to watch! Mind you, the one time that their natural agility sometimes fails them is on the road and although they are fast runners and can dodge and weave around obstacles, it’s not much defence against fast moving traff ic as the many road kills you see show. They seem to become disorientated by traff ic. I remember one occasion when a squirrel Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) however, got lucky. I was following a large tanker trunk damaged by Grey squirrels lorry when a squirrel ran straight into its path and disappeared underneath it as it thundered along - amazingly it somehow emerged unscathed turned Images – Creative Commons , © BirdPhotos.com. – Left Right © Roger ith.Top Griff right, © Tim Felce (Airwolfhound) Sibrydion 41 …Continued

Another accusation oft en levelled at grey squirrels is that they are responsible for the decline in our native red squirrel population. This isn’t entirely fair as given certain conditions, greys and reds can co-exist relatively comfortably. One major problem though is that the greys are carriers of the virulent squirrel pox disease to which they themselves are immune but which if transmitted to the reds is fatal with practically a 100% death rate. Grey squirrels, as a species, are nothing if not resilient. The last ones to be deliberately released in Britain were in 1929 and within twenty odd years they were considered a major pest. The Government put a price on their heads and off ered a bounty of half a crown (in pre-decimal money) per fi ve squirrels killed - the tails having to be produced as proof. Sixpence a tail! I seem to remember statements being bandied about in the fi ft ies when I was a boy (showing my age now!) to the eff ect that the grey squirrel population would be eliminated within fi ve years. Well here we are some sixty odd years later with a thriving nationwide population. So they got that a bit Native Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) wrong to say the least! Whilst appreciating that they can be a problem, in in a panic-stricken circle and ran straight under my some respects and that it was, of course, a mistake car! I was sure that it was a goner but as I glanced to introduce them in the fi rst place, they are in my rear view mirror I saw it reach the road edge here now and here to stay by the look of it, so its and head for the safety of the nearest tree. I really probably best to accept them and enjoy watching hope that squirrel had a long and happy life. their antics and acrobatics. It was established in 1958, with a current membership of 60 artists – some professional, some amateur and some new learners. It is a welcoming, friendly and inclusive society. All that is needed for membership is a love of art and some creative urge.

The highlight of its year is the annual MAS Art Mawddach Estuary – Huw Lewis-Jones Exhibition, where every member can exhibit his or her work. It will be held this year at Ty Siamas, Eldon Square, Dolgellau from the 18 – 30th of August from 10am to 5pm. Entry is free and there will be around 140 paintings on show, with some real bargains to be had. The competition theme for the show is “Sea and Shores” which is the Welsh Tourism theme for the year. The public are invited to vote for the people’s choice at the exhibition opening on Saturday the 18th of August at mid-day. Radiance MAS are always looking for new members and support them by organising regular workshops, covering diff erent media and genres throughout the year.
